The window somehow jumped the track and the plastic elbow at the drive gearbox is broken. Two questions: 1. Is there a replacement for the plastic elbow cable guide available? Where?? 2. Any hints on adjusting the window guide rails. Maybe I should say realigning the rails as I ended up losening them in order to get the window back on the track. Now the window won't seat right. I wouldn't call it a depressed market but I would call it a realistic market. There are very clean 308 Ferrari's for under $30,000, if you look hard enough. The current $16 to $18,000 for a clean, unabused DeLorean is a pretty healthy price in the current market. As rare as they seem, there are still a lot of DeLoreans around compared to many other exotic cars. They've done a good job holding their value along side other marquees, in fact better than many, but they'll never surpass the likes of Ferrari or Lamborgini. I always say, "oh, I don't want to tell what I payed". In a way, I make it sound like I payed a lot of money for the car. I always try to give the impression that the Deloreans are expensive and exotic, right up with the Lamborghini Countachs. I am doing this to give the Deloreans a good, respectable reputation so that maybe they will be worth those high prices in the future. I wonder how badly it damages the reputation/market, and resale value when we tell them the true price that Deloreans are selling for? But if the cars are cheap, and that is known, maybe more of them will sell therefore making less and less of them available. This issue has two sides doesn't it... If you would like to see the photos that go with it, you can view it on the DOA web page. EUROFEST 97 TRIP SUMMARY The Eurofest '97 held in Dunmurry (Belfast) Ireland was the first DeLorean related event that I have participated in since my DeLorean was purchased new in October 1981. The Eurofest was good fun. The citizens of Ireland were without exception the most polite and good natured people that I have ever met. The way that the media portrays Northern Ireland does not do it justice. We have the same if not greater problems in the United States. The weather was fantastic, unseasonably warm, California shirt sleeve weather. The food was very good, much better than what I had when I visited England and Wales several years ago. I arrived in Belfast Thursday afternoon May 22, 1997, after traveling for over 16 hours from San Francisco, California. I met a fellow DeLorean enthusiast (Michael Pack) while waiting for my connecting flight in London. We quickly became friends and suspect that he will be a friend for life. #1 We caught a cab from the airport to the Forte Crest Hotel in Dunmurry, our base for the weekend. The cab driver (Alister Cheyne 0802.811000) was truly an ambassador for his country. The Forte Crest is a wonderful Hotel. It was the first time I have every stayed in a Hotel where I felt that I was at home. Terry the nightman quickly became our friend and has offered to take my family and myself to the lakes down south if we should have the opportunity to visit again. That offer in itself is enough to encourage me to plan a future vacation to Ireland. Everywhere we went we were welcomed with opened arms. Thursday evening, the registration reception was held at the Hotel, an interview of John DeLorean was shown and the participants were given there registration packages. Michael Pack, James Espey , Chris Rabalais and I were fortunate enough to gain access to an apartment (Cool Moyne House) on the top floor overlooking the factory site. Mr. McMillian welcomed us into his home so we could take in a birdseye view of the DeLorean Factory site. The four of us then gained access to the Factory Site for a quick tour. The Security Chief, Jimmy French, was very hospitable. As we began to walk around the test track, the local police arrived. #2 What a treat, we all piled into their car and took a wild ride around the track. After several laps around the track, we visited with the officers for at least an hour. We were invited to tour the police station if we had time. Friday morning we were off to Tyrone Crystal in Dungannon. The tour was very interesting and the Crystal was very beautiful. Tyrone Crystal is a place where you could easily purchase gifts for people that have everything. John Truscott #3 and Osamu Shimohara (President, DeLorean Club of Japan) both were able to learn the art of cutting Crystal. The end results of their efforts may have guaranteed them the opportunity of a second career. When we returned to the Hotel, the Technical Seminar was held. The keynote speaker was Mike Loesby, the Director of Engineering. #4 Mr. Loesby made a presentation detailing the construction of the factory and the DeLorean. Mr. Joseph Murray, who worked at the factory from the time it was an open field until shortly before its closing shared his extensive knowledge and innumerable stories with us. We then had the products fair, where many interesting collectable items were available. This was also a great opportunity to visit with all, learn many interesting facts and hear many fascinating stories. We began Saturday by riding the luxury coach to the DeLorean (Montupet) Factory. We all had the opportunity to take a Helicopter flight #5 over the factory grounds, ride in a DeLorean and tour the site. Riding in a DeLorean around the track was an experience that I shall never forget. The level of excitement is beyond description. A good example of the hospitality and camaraderie present is how at least three people offered there Helicopter tickets to Steve, a US Coast Guard member who was on temporary assignment in Dunmurry. I had met Steve in the Hotel lounge, when I found out that he had no family with him, and a whole weekend without any plans, I invited him to take the tour with us. Steve also was given rides in the DeLorean and took the tour. I believe that when we meet a member of the Armed Services traveling alone, we are obligated to welcome and include them to thank them for there service. The Concours competition and Motor show was held Saturday afternoon. It was a real treat for me to see so many DeLoreans in one place. In fact there even was a red one which I road around the track in. #6 I really appreciate the owners of the DeLoreans that brought their cars and shared them with us. Later that evening, we had the Eurofest Banquet, raffle, auction and awards ceremony. #7 The highlight of the banquet for me was when Joseph Murray gave the youngest member of the DeLorean Owners Association a DeLorean Christmas card that Joseph won in the raffle. The young man was so overcome with joy that he was speechless. Later that evening I had the chance to speak with Joseph and Eileen Murray. Joseph told me that the young man would enjoy having the DeLorean Christmas card much longer than he would. Eileen Murray told me that Joseph has always been a very generous and compassionate man. I visited with Joseph and Eileen Murray until the wee hours of Sunday morning and I hope that I will have the opportunity to visit with them again. Sunday morning, I had to leave early to catch my flight home. Unfortunately I was unable to schedule more time for the trip, but I will not make that mistake again. My family and I will be in Snowmass this coming labor day and I look forward to meeting my fellow car enthusiasts again. This trip will never be forgotten by Scott Mueller. Happy Motoring. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 20:30:35 -0700 From: Scott Mueller Subject: DML: YELLOW/RED DELOREAN PHOTOS A WHILE BACK, I POSTED A MESSAGE THAT IF YOU WANTED A COPY OF THE PHOTO I TOOK OF A YELLOW DELOREAN AT THE PACIFIC COAST DREAM MACHINES IN HALF MOON BAY CALIFORNIA, YOU SHOULD SEND A REQUEST TO ME DIRECTLY. It's worth mmentioning that not a single other car begins to draw the attention the DMC does. >$45K bucks...sure why not for all that kind of attention! > Because it's outrageous. We've had this thread before. A pricetag that high keeps many people away from getting it. After having the car for almst a year now, I can say that I'd shoot myself if I paid $45k for it. It's a 15 year old car...and I use mine as a daily driver. I've had the water pump go, the fuel pump go, and these things cost money. I met a guy here in NJ who had a Countach and was complaining that the engine was blowing smoke. For $100k someone from Italy had better come here and fix it for me! The point I'm making is that as much as I love the car, I wouldn't put anything more than $25k on a pristine one. I paid $11,900 for mine and put about $2k into it. If I could sell it for $45k I would and then buy two more at $15k each. I'd also like to see someone try to sell it for $45k; it'll never happen. Besides, why should I pay for attention? I'll skip the boring and LONG flight to Belfast from Phoenix except to say that it was both boring and LONG. Sender: dmcnews-approval@world.std.com Precedence: list Reply-To: dmcnews@world.std.com Fellow list member and local member Chris Rabalais and I travelled together on this trip, and we arrived in Belfast around 10:00 am Thursday morning. We picked up our rental car (a 1996 Seat Ibiza, Spanish built economy car) and with me behind the wheel, proceeded to terrorize the locals. Knut Grimsrud wrote sometime ago about my inability to stay on my own side of the road while driving, this trip was very pleasurable in that the wrong side was the right side. Great fun! Later that afternoon we met up with "Senator" Mike Pack and Scott Mueller, two other list members from Maryland and California, respectively. We decided to head down to the factory to see what we could see since we had a few hours to kill before the welcoming reception. "Senator" Mike Pack managed to sweet talk our way into getting a "behind the scenes" tour from one of the security guards. As we walked through the grounds, there is literally no evidence that DMC ever existed there, save for the test track. The test track in 1997 bears no resemblence to the photos I've seen of the test track from when the plant was new (circa 1980/81). Everything has grown considerably, from the surrounding areas to the trees and shrubs and bushes that now envelope the track. Speaking of the test track, as we approached the track, four members of the local police were driving around it in their Rover police car. They generously drove us around the track several times and let "Senator" Mike Pack drive around once. The local police were all wearing body armor and carrying automatic weapons - but they were some of the most friendly and open law enforcement personnel I have ever met, as were all the people I met in Northern Ireland. Continuing our "private tour" we next stopped at the former "Training Centre". This building was where all new employees were trained prior to working on the assembly line. Undoubtedly the greatest find of the trip was on this excursion, as "Senator" Mike Pack climbed to the top of a small "chemical shack" within the building, he discovered a large quantity of old telexes from mid 1980 and mid 1981. We were able to keep all of them and its obvious they have been there since the factory was closed. We're making copies of them as we go through them and while most of them appear to be administrivia, some provide an interesting insight in to the inner workings of DMC and DMCL. As a result of our "private tour", we missed most of the videotaped interview with JZD made last January, but perhaps someone else from the list who was there can fill us in on the gist of it. Friday morning had us on the road to Tyrone Crystal, an interesting non- DMC trip. This was where the RHD DMC first showed up. It is said to be one of the cars converted for certification/testing purposes. Interestingly enough, it has the highest VIN I have seen for the 82 models, #12174 with a May 82 build date. Friday afternoon was the tech seminar, given by Mike Loasby, DMC's Director of Engineering. Mike showed a slide show that he had from the days when the factory was running and it was sort of a "step-by-step" how the car was put together. He answered a few questions from the audience, and displayed his DMCL necktie. Unlike the "common" DeLorean necktie of which several hundred (perhaps a thousand) were made, this tie was one of 14 made that were given to the directors. He later auctioned off the tie for the benefit of the "Save the Children" foundation. I am pleased to admit that I was the winning bidder at 200 pounds (approx $350). Saturday AM had us visiting the factory for the "official" tour, helicopter ride over the facility and ride around the test track. The helicopter ride was a great opportunity to see how much it's changed over the years and get some great pictures. I had a couple rides around the track in a DeLorean before Robin McNeill (a DML'er and co-founder of the new DeLorean Motor Club) arranged for me to drive a DeLorean around the track. Talk about a rush! It's not hard to imagine what it must've been like when new DMC's whizzed around the track regularly. An experience I will not soon forget! About a dozen DMC's showed up all together, including the RHD and a red one. Saturday night was the big banquet (complete with the obligatory rubbery chicken dinner served at most DOA events). Awards were given to those that had travelled the furthest, including DML'er Osamu Shimohara who flew in with his family from Japan, and a gentleman from Germany that drove his DMC to the event. A raffle was also held, and while I wasn't one of the winners there, three DeLorean posters now have new homes as a result of the raffle and many more found their way into the hands of the locals. Sunday we visited the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum where theoriginal Giugiaro wooden mockup is on display, as is car #514, the surviving one of the two that the local auto club in Belfast put 50,000 miles on for testing purposes. To all who visited the musuem and got pictures, this is the one roll of film that I lost on the way back home! I will gladly pay for reprints of your pictures of these cars and the rest of the museum's DMC exhibits! Please email me!! I saw very little memorabilia for sale at the event. I only saw one former employee there with items for sale, and it was a full size copy of an architectural drawing of the factory. Interesting item, and if anyone is interested, I will look into having copies made (30x40 inches). I also purchased a "regular" DeLorean necktie, new in a never-opened bag for just 10 pounds ($16.50 approx). Robert Lamrock and David Howarth put on a wonderful event that went off very smoothly. All in all, it was a great event that will never be forgotten. Depending on how damaged the elbow is, you might be able to just piece it together and using epoxy and metal reinforcement outside of that, do a good job. While I was at it, I used metal collars (2 short aluminum tubes roughly the shape of a "C" and an inch or so long) to reinforce the metal track so that when the window motor is at its last bit of travel, giving a tight seal to the window, the cable doesn't pop out of the track. Hey everyone, A couple of quick questions, as my 'D' is fairly new to me, my oil pressure gauge seems to flicker, i.e. the needle pulses up and down a few mm (1/16" or so). Plus when I first start the car it goes up to 5.8 almost immediately (it's the metric guage 5.8 kg/cm^2 (80 psi)) then if I let the car idle, it slowly drops to around 2.6 (40 psi) flickering the while. When I give it some gas it jumps back to 5.8 (80 psi) is this normal, or do I possibly have a bad sender? Second, since there have been several discussions on the virtues of oil. What weight do you typically use in your 'D' the manuals seem little vague on that. Some places recommend 20W/50 but other locations have 10W/30 etc. Third, I've been hunting ofr a new set of tires. I've heard recommended Yokohama AVS Intermediates, but I've had no luck finding those in the big beef for the back (235/60HR15) What tires does everyone have, and impressions of them? I'm currently considering purchasing an '82 DeLorean. I'd appreceate it if someone could recomend a good service center in the north-central/gainesville Florida area. I would also greatly value the opinions of some of the list members concerning the deal I'm getting. I've found an '82 DeLorean, 5-speed, with grey leather and 20,000 miles. Asking price is $15,000 (USD). It's always been garaged, the stainless steel is virtually flawless, and the interior is in tip top shape. There are a few exceptions, specifically, A large black splotch on the leather just below the glove box, some wear on the driver's seat's leather and the passanger's side carpet, a small scratch on the rear fiberglass piece, and the power antenna doesn't work properly. This car is also mostly original except for a few things like gas struts, rear tires, ac/alternator belt, battery door, headliner, etc... If someone could give me an idea what it might cost to get this car competition worthy I'd appreceate that. I'd also like to know why it is that '83s seem to demand a higher price while the '81s and '82s seem to demand the about the same money. (I originally set out looking for a canadian '83, 5- speed, w/grey leather, but don't think I'll find one in this nice a condition) -buster@fdt.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 17:06:09 -0400 (EDT) From: GullWinged@aol.com Subject: DML: Happy Birthday to VIN 1529 Well today is May 29th, which is the date I have set as my car's birthday. It turns 16 years old now and will be taking it's driving test next week in hopes of getting its own license. :) To celebrate the occasion, I plan to thoroughly clean up the car and take it to a car show this weekend as well as eat some Ben & Jerry's Brittania ice cream purchased for this special day. I also wanted to let people know that I have received two interesting DeLorean items recently and will be gleaning tidbits from them to post in the coming month or two. The first item is a mint copy of the July 1977 issue of Car and Driver that takes a 'First Look at America's Stunning New Sports Car - John DeLorean's Gull-Wing DMC-12".' The second item, which just arrived in the mail today, is a very good copy of the book 'On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors.' Also let this serve as notice that I will be making the following resources available electronically within a few weeks: 1) Several graphs detailing asking prices of DeLoreans versus year, mileage, date listed and location within the U.S. 2) A cross-reference list consisting mostly of items learned from personal experience, the DML and other non-copyrighted sources. All information will be copyrighted by my company, Stormrider Media Productions. HOWEVER, it may be freely distributed to others as long as there is NO charge for the info. Basically, this means others cannot reprint the graphs or interchange lists, or portions thereof, and sell them as their own, or include them in any other publication which costs money, i.e. 'DeLorean World', without my permission. When I put the key in and turn it I sometimes get nothing, othertimes the car will start right up and sometimes the car will start and then immediatly die. It is completely random and weather, and/or if the car is hot or cold does not seem to make a difference. I get the accesories come on and when it gets to the point where it should start I only get a click... Any Ideas? Sender: dmcnews- approval@world.std.com Precedence: list Reply-To: dmcnews@world.std.com Also my front drivers side blinker went out - is this pretty easy to replace? (I must admit I haven't looked at the manuals.. ;) Finally one more thing, my car seems to be idling really fast, between 1000 and 2000 rpms, usually around the 1500+ range. Somtimes I can cure this by taping on the gas pedal. but most of the time it just continues to idle at this speed - also it doesn't matter if my car is hot or cold... Is this a vacuum leak? Why do things always happen all at once? Thanks for any ideas, Dan Berglund ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 17:28:31 -0700 From: Lee Seiler Subject: Re: DML: Oil and Tires. (Along that note, I may be interested in parting with my original Goodyear NCT's, the front are like new full tread, but that the back are down to about 10% tread left.) >Thanx. >-- >+-----------+-------------------------------+------------+ |___________| Michael.Fischer@pipe.nova.ca |____________| |"Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in his shoes.| | That way, if he gets angry, he'll be a mile away - | | and barefoot." | >+--------------------------------------------------------+ Hello Mike, Like you I have only been driving my DMC for a few months, (after years in atorage). I had many of the same questions, and for what it's worth here are some of the things I did. First the oil: I use 20/50, my regular mechanic (Automotive Acrs-Berkeley Calif) who work on Volov engines a lot and have done top notch work on my DMC suggested the 20/50 based on the average temp and my driving. They drained and flushed my engine used a cleaner and flushed again befor installing new filter and OIL. sofar after 5K miles the oil is still clean so I am pleased about that part. Next the pressure, my gauge is like yours, the pressure goes up and down based on engine speed and load, I am told this is quite normal for the engine. Next Tires, I also had original NCT's on my DMS and found as you did they are no longer made. I found that there were only to tire brands available in both 195/60HR-14 & 235/60HR-15. they are Goodyear and Yokohama. I test drove both types and found several things. First both did not have the same very flat tire provile. of the two available to me the Yokahama looked more like the originals but did not "feel" as solid or corner as well as the Goodyear tire. I settled for the Goodyear brand because it looked more like the originals "Goodyear" name and did the best in road test (mine). if you like I can give you the exact information on the Goodyears.
