Since others are continuing comment, I figured I'd jump in as well.
Excuse any innaccurate approximations of numbers here, I didn't exactly
count everything.
My wife Julee, son Gary and I drove (a minivan) from the Chicago area and
arrived Friday night in time to make the get-together downtown. I
introduced Julee to Rob Grady and Stephen Wynne to show her where all the
money was going over the summer.
Attendance at the warehouse was probably about 100. Seemed like a very
high percentage of mailing list folks. I noticed that James Espey wore a
"Delorean Midwest Connection" nametag - nice job Don (Silver Fox). I
always thought Phoenix was a little more "west" than "mid". After reading
James' entry, I have to report that the picture I took of him during the
tech session makes him look even worse than he apparently felt. . .
As we combined the trip with a visit to some relatives (cheap sleep!), we
didn't partake of the after-hours festivities. Maybe in Cincinnati. . . .

GUEST MODERATOR'S NOTE: The following is the expressed personal
opinions of Daniel. Although information and recommendations on the
service obtained from various service and parts centers is encouraged
for the benefit of the mailinglist members, please try to keep
accounts focused on the service obtained and avoid personal attacks
and "flame bait" where possible.
Dear DML,
I am a new DeLorean owner (as of 6 weeks ago) and have recently discovered
a horrible problem in my fuel tank. Virtually every single element in my
fuel tank is ruined. All rubber pieces were actually completely gone!
(I'll include pictures of the damage and the repairs online soon).
Well, I decided to call all three DeLorean part dealers (I've ordered small
stuff from all 3, including manuals, shirts, and cleaning supplies) to see
what parts are available and how much they cost (a lot of the parts are
rare and my
initial calls were unsuccessful). DMC Houston and PJ Grady
were as friendly as can be (as usual), but I called DeLorean One afterwards
because I love their 1994 catalog and wanted to see if they carry any of
the harder to get parts. I can not believe the way I was treated by Ed.
I've spent approximately $50 there in the past few weeks, but when I was
inquiring about
three rare parts (the sending unit, the tank screen, and the baffle
assembly), he
asked very very rudely who else I had called. I told him I called everyone
and he freaked out on me. He told me never to call again since I wasn't
his customer
and that he doesn't deal with Rob Grady's customers. After a minute of his
abuse,
I was finally able to get him to shut up and explained that I wasn't
anyone's customer
and that I was in fact everyone's customer, and he told me that I should
not have called
him, and he hung up on me. What the heck is wrong with him? I hope he reads
this email, and I hope I never run into him in person. He is the rudest,
most annoying person I have ever had the pleasure not to meet. I don't
care if he uses his harsh personality to make cute little ads in DeLorean
World; he is hurting the DeLorean name, plain and simple. This is not
meant to start a flame. It is a FACT. He is hurting the DeLorean name.
Why? Because, for the first time since I started to pursue the DeLorean in
1990, and for the first time since I bought my DeLorean 6 weeks ago, I'm
questioning myself and my purchase. If Ed is affecting me, then I know he
is affecting every other person he treats like dirt. Every time I've
called Ed to order small things, he has been abrasive, but I've put up with
it to maintain a business relationship with him. I mean, all I did was ask
if he carried a part!
Imagine what happens if a new DeLorean enthusiast makes their first inquiry
to DeLorean
One? My wife recently tried to buy me a Xmas gift from DeLorean One. I'm
not sure who
she talked to, but they refused to talk to her since she didn't have my VIN
number. They
refused to talk to her! I thank God that DeLorean One is not the only
DeLorean parts/service center
around. If any PJGrady or DMC Houston employees are on this list, I'd like
to thank
you for making the transition to a DeLorean owner much easier. If Ed reads
this list, I'd
like to thank you for making my shopping decisions so much easier. I am
putting over $1000
in parts into the DeLorean this week to maintain it, and I thought Ed would
be happy to have
another person in the community being responsible with their DeLorean. Can
anyone explain
why I was blacklisted today for making a very simple telephone call for parts?
I just bought $400 worth of stuff from the DOA including a membership, and
I just found out that Ed is a major part of the DOA. Would someone please
convince me to stay in the DOA. Is it worth the $60 a year? Why are they
bothering James? I've
read every single DML back issue and I can't understand why they are being
mean to him. He's
said nothing but good things about them. I love my DeLorean World
collection I just
bought, but I hate to think ANY of my money is going to Ed now. Is there
any element of Ed that
is good, or is he just a plain evil person? Did someone in his family die
today, or is he always
this mean?
I was told by a friend not to say anything bad about Ed because I won't be
able to order any parts from him anymore, but I was just told by Ed that I
can't order any parts from him anymore, so screw the gag order. I don't
care if I'm banned from every expo from now on (I've never been to one
yet), if I have have to deal with people like Ed at these expos, then I'll
just take myself out of the DeLorean World and starting putting Volvo parts
in my car just to make Ed cringe. Is Ed an active participant in the expos?
A very very upset DeLorean owner,

Dear DML,
First, I want to appologize if anyone thought I was trying to start a flame war.
I want to thank everyone for their personal emails that I have received over
this topic, and I want to say that I hope people continue to rely on Ed and
DeLorean One for their DeLorean needs as they are a great source of information
and parts, but I prefer to work with nice, friendly people, so I am going to
stick with DMC Houston and PJGrady from now on. I'm in the early stages of
shooting a DeLorean Feature Film (please don't start a thread on this, contact
me directly if you have any questions about this), so I will need all the help I
can get in the next three years, and I don't want to offend anyone who found my
comments about Ed to be unwarranted. To prevent this from being a continued
thread, I will end now just by giving my professional opinion of each DeLorean
parts/service dealer to make it less of a DeLorean One bash. Let's not continue
the Ed topic on the DML, but I would love to hear more opinions on service
centers/parts dealers if anyone has more comments.
DeLorean One
Tremendous source of information if you don't mind being "talked down to" for
a few minutes. They have a large selection of parts and are willing to talk
to you about your problem, but you may never get to order the part you really
want as they may attempt to try to
tell you your problem is something else. Ed Bernstein will typically be the
person who answers the phone. Ed is one of the original
founders of the DeLorean Owners Association so he has definitely been a very
important person in the maintenance of the DeLorean name. Be prepared to
have your VIN # ready or you'll never get past the initial
hellos. Their 1994 catalog is great and is actually quite entertaining for
just reading from time to time to see what you might want to buy next. Parts
typically take a little long to receive from them. I think they hold orders
for a while to see if you order anything else to make sure shipping will be
less, but this is just a guess.
DMC Houston
Used to be affiliated with DeLorean One, but are completely separate now.
Old DeLorean One catalogs will not reflect this "recent" change however.
Also, DMC Houston has recently obtained KAPAC's entire DeLorean parts
warehouse, but it may be awhile before all these parts are available by
calling them as they haven't all be categorized. DMC Houston's phones are
typically answered by either Stephen or Warren, both of whom are quite
friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They don't have an official catalog,
but they will go out of their way to assist you on the phone and they get
parts to you quite fast.
PJGrady
I haven't ordered a lot from them, but they are awesome! They are remaking
hard to get parts or weak parts for the DeLorean such as the Tank Sending
Unit and the DeLorean locking mechanisms. They don't have a catalog, but if
you call them, they will send you a nice package of all their DeLorean World
published advertisements.
DeLorean Motor Center (Don Steger)
Another great source of information and parts. I haven't ordered anything
from Don before, but everytime I've talked to him he's been very polite, and
he has a great selection of parts. He's had recent deaths in his company so
I'm not sure how that will affect orders or work, but from what I could tell,
he's a great person to call for everything.
Hemmings
I've ordered numerous parts from the little dealers in Hemmings (I'll list
their numbers and stuff on my Web page soon). You can typically get very
cheap original parts from them in case you are trying to cut a few corners.
They have all been very polite, but some are selling their parts to other
companies so the numbers may not be up to date from month to month.

Hi Group,
Just got back from Carmel, nice weather, mediocre golf, Hi Knut, never broke 85,
relaxing.
This was a 1,600+ mi. round trip with nary a hitch. For those of you that are
new, my car is an '81 with twin turbo setup and water injection. This is my
fourth or fifth trip like this with this car and I don't even consider the
possibility of a problem. Gas it and go!
I paid a fair price for this car from an owner that had bought it new and
maintained it. It did need some upgrading when I got it and has had a few minor
problems that can be expected with any car that's 16 years old. I also enjoy
working on it and have done some things that didn't really need doing, just for
fun.
I've seen several postings concerning price. If you don't want a lot of wierd
things coming up pay a fair price for a good, well maintained car. If you buy a
bargain, you will find that you didn't! IMO any car selling for less than 15K is
probably no bargain, I agree with Chase. Less than 10K is a parts car, there may
be exceptions but rarely.
I was going to ad a comment on Ed but I feel that thread has been beaten to
death. My past comments stand.
Doesn't the "Tank-Zilla" have most of these parts?

This thread may be getting old but... I paid $7,000 for my DeLorean. I flushed
the tank, installed a new water pump, rebuilt the brakes, installed new fan
motors and cleaned it. I've been driving it every day ever since.
It has one minor ding on the top just behind the passenger door (can't see
it unless you look) but aside from that, the body is perfectly straight.
It still needs paint (facias) and interior work but it's been a great car
so far. Isn't it great what the Internet can do?

I know that a number of D drivers have performed engine replacements on your D.
I would very much like to gather your thoughts on and experiences with different
engines. If you have performed, or are considering performing, an engine
replacement, I would like to know:
Which engines have you considered? What were the pro's and con's of each?
Which did you choose? What were your criteria for making a decision?
How did the installation go? What difficulties did you face?
How do you like the results?
If you replaced the transmission as well, describe those decision and
installation processes as well. If not -- why not? :)
If I get a good response to this, I will combine the information I gather and
organize it into a web page to share with everyone else.
Hope to hear from you soon,

if you classify your car a a collectors car and do show limited miles because of
winter storage etc. State Farm has a reasonable rate. I used to pay around $500
a year. With the collector policy it only cost me $210 for the whole year.
They do ask for miles driven each year and keep a running tab.
It is average miles driven per year though rather than actual so if you put
on a lot of miles one year it doesn't necessarily discontinue the insurance
rate. It requires a photo of the car and you have to answer a bunch of
insurance type questions but was relatively easy to get. It is for older cars
and this is the first year my car was eligible.
I'm sure other insurance companies have the same type of policies.
I'm in Ohio so I'm sure there are variations per state. I am also in a city
classification so I don't have the best rates posible.

- - Revs to 4,000 - 5,000 no problem.
- - Makes no unusual noises.
- - Dies very quitely.
- - Replaced the fuel filter, no affect.
- - Seems to be OK in reverse( hard to tell for sure and I believe reverse is
geared different than first).
- - Got it back up the driveway by reving the engine and partially releasing
the clutch. Not a good practice but it got the D into the garage.
- - Prior to this there were no indications of problems. Have driven the car
about 150 miles since putting it back together after frame (rust)
restoration.
- - Recent changes, added a Delco 94 Amp alt which appears to be working fine.
I'm leaning towards manifold vacuum problems which will break down into fuel
and/or air flow related problems. No readily apparent problems there.
Since checking to see if the problem has been fixed is rather difficult, and
hard on the clutch, does anyone have any additional insight?

I had a similar problem where the throttle would stick. When you "blip" the gas
it would come down. I did the following, the first reduced the problem, the
second eliminated it. You may want to try them in reverse since the latter is
easier to do.
1. Shorten the connecting rod by one or two turns. The rod connects to the
spool and the throttle plates.
2. Make sure that the throttle cable has a little slack, or else it will hold
the throttle slightly open when you come off the pedal slowly.
Hope this helps,
NK

Dear DML,
I had this same problem.
When I was in columbus, Rob Grady helped me with it. Just like the
previous email said... tighten the rod, because the vacuum the intake
creates causes the hammer to come up slightly and disengage the idle
switch. Check to see that your bushing is okay there is no slop in your
ball and socket joints (rod and spool). That fixed my problem
temporarily. I have a whole new assembly on order. I hope this helps.
If you have any further problems call Rob Grady... My problem is fresh
in his mind so I am sure he can help you out easily.

Subject: DML: PRV V6 Oil Filters
I've been doing research into oil filters as used on the PRV V6. It's hard
to tell exactly which applications of that motor use what filter as many
of them are odd enough that don't have listings in filter catalogs. Here's
what I was able to find by back/side tracking starting from the Peugeot
505 variant.
The mechanical specs are as follows:
OD 3.15"
Length 3.03"
Inlet M20 X 1.5
It seems that a bunch of filter companies discontinued the old 2849 and
switched to numbers like 3950 and others. Knowing the mech specs makes
the filter number largely a moot point.
Interesting, the 3950 is used on a lot of recent cars. The little Mazda
made Fords with 1300cc motors and some Probes, some Mazda 626 and B2000,
and Mitsubishi cars with 3 liter V6 including their Turbo wonder 3000.
This could be great news as there may be aftermarket sources of remote oil
filter adapters for one of those that may provide us with a way to add an
oil cooler.

Hi! I've been lurking here for months now in anticipation that one of
my contracts would allow me to afford to purchase a D. Well, it looks
like that contract has arrived. It'll probably be another year or so
before I'm in the market, but the work is getting me out of good old
Denver and down to the french quarter. I'm mostly writing this in hopes
to get in contact with any DMC owners down in the New Orleans area (I'll
be working a contract near Slidell) and possibly meet up for coffee or a
game of pool, and to point out the best jazz bars ;) Any replies would
be greatly appreciated.....

Subject: DML: Acceleration Problem Solution
About a month ago I described an acceleration problem and an oil light
problem that I was experiencing. I received several great suggestions th=
at I
am thankful for, but luckily the problem I had was simpler.
Here is a detailed description of my car=92s symptoms that I gave to my
mechanic:
Problem #1:
Normally when I push in on the clutch, the tachometer falls and when the
needle reaches about 700 RPM, the engine revs up very slightly (to around
900), then idles at 700. Now, many times when the needle reaches the bot=
tom
(700) the engine will rev up to around 1500 RPM, then idle at 700. Now,
about half of the time when I push in on the clutch, the needle will fall=
to
around 500 RPM, then the oil light will blink on, then the engine shoots =
up
to around 1500, then idles at 700. Several times, the engine has complet=
ely
died during this event with the oil light. I have found that the chances=
of
getting the light are significantly greater when I have the engine runnin=
g at
2500 RPM or greater, then immediately push in on the clutch (as I do when
stopping).
Problem #2:
When I try to accelerate the least bit hard, the car shakes. Accelerati=
on
is hindered and it feels like the engine is bogged down. I tried injecto=
r
cleaner, I replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, air fil=
ter,
and rotor, but the problem still exists. This problem has also been
occurring for about a month now and seems to be getting worse. Strangely
enough, this problem seems to only occur when the engine has completely
warmed (after I have driven it a distance).
Solution:
Both of these problems were fixed by adjusting the fuel / air mix of my c=
ar.
They said my car was getting too much fuel and not enough air=85A $50
solution, now my D runs great!

I seem to have lost a grid/grill thing from the engine cover. Lower right.
How this fell out, I have no idea. Can't go up because the spoiler sits
right on top, and I don't see it going down without getting stuck in the
engine. Well... It's not in the engine !
Plus, the holding brackets are still there ???
Anyways, now I'm looking for one of these. Can anybody help ?

Geoffroy.

I live in Slidell, there was a guy in Mississippi selling a D,
less than 12,000 miles, automatic, garage kept for $13,500 not too long
ago. Whether or not it is still for sale is unknown to me. I can do
some checking though.

Hello,
About 1 month ago, someone listed Eleanor Rogers address on this site.
A friend of mine who has a DeLorean in New York (no computer though)
wants to get a turbo installed on his DeLorean, however, the address I
sent him that was listed in the dmc news, was returned with no
forwarding address to him. Did they go out of business? Does anyone
know of another turbo model manufacturer or point of contact I could
send him? Any help is appreciated!

I was going to stay out of this thread because, as an independent
bookseller it might sound a bit like sour grapes, which it is not.
I believe you will have much better success going to an independent
bookseller (new or used) who offers "out-of-print" book searches. You
see,
there is no money to be made by the bookseller who locates the book for
you
- - -it is a customer service. Amazon.com is not is the "out-of-print"
books business, regardless of what their web page says and, unless there
is
money to be made, they are not in the customer service business either.
