inaccurate!
I heard this a few years ago. I dont think they were able to do it.
The trick they were trying to pull had to do with the un-used cobra
frames that were still avalible. The story I heard was that Shelby lied
about the frames, and was just stamping old VIN's on new frames.
The problem is that if you build a "98 Delorean" that is the exact same
design as a "81 Delorean" it will not meet the current saftey and
emission standards. If you are just restoring (RE-Building) a 81
Delorean, using a frame with a valid VIN from 1981, then it only has to
meet 81 standards.
I dont think Shelby got away with his project because the so-called
unused frames were incomplete, and did not have valid VIN's from the
year they were origionaly supposed to be made.
I am not sure what the exact laws are on this, because if it were as
simple as just a VIN, then you would be able to go to a junk yard, get a
VIN plate, and weld it to a new frame and build a new car. I am pretty
sure you can get away with this as a individual, but as a company trying
to sell *NEW* 81 Deloreans (or Cobras), I dont think you could do it.

If the New York D owner doesn't plan on installing it himself, I suggest
he
contact Rob Grady who has installed several of Eleanor's twin turbos (mine

the turbos.

I have never seen this.. (not that it means anything, there are lots of
things I have not seen!)
Anyway, you may have to buy the entire engine cover. You best bet is to
call a few of the delorean part suppliers and see if any of them have
just a grill laying around. While your at it, you can price shop! If
you have no luck finding just the grill, you may want to ask if they
have any used, or damaged engine covers. Between theirs and yours, you
can make one good one.

If anyone is interested in a low mileage ( 2671miles) 1981, black interior
automatic, Jody deLorean (John's neice) is selling hers. The sale is at
this
point a private sale and not through her fathers dealership. The asking
price is $26,900 obo and any inquireriesar to be made through Sam
Galletti (AT)
216-226-2250. He is authorized to negotiate for the car. It was offered
to
me last week since I had previously purched her fathers (Dharles DeLorean,
John's brother) a few years ago. I had also expressed interest in her
car at
that time so they called me when it became available.
I am not interested in it since I already have a low mileage car that I
feel
terribly guilty about driving so I am now in the market for a grey
automatic
so my wife can drive it also.
I have seen the car and it is in as good of condition as when I bought
mine
(basically excellent mechanical but the undercarriage has 15 years of shop
dust. They did an excellent job of preparing the car and for me all
paperwork was done by DeLorean family members so the car does have some
history behind it.
They are interested in seeing that someone who appreciates the car gets it
and have asked me to offer it to existing DeLorean owners first. If no
takers then it will be put up for sale at the dealership in a couple of
weeks.
For actual sales negotiations call Sam. I have the vin number but not
with
me as I type this so if interested I can answer a few questions over the
net
since I have seen the car.

Good point Marc, I wastalking with someone on this very point when I was
in
Colombus last week. The emission laws are targeted at companies that
are mass producing thousands of cars. There are enough parts in the DMC
warehouse to create several new cars. I don't know how many, but I can't
image
it would be more than 10-20. And then that would be it, forever. I doubt
that
federal regulators would see this as worth their time. This type of
situation
was certianly not what the lawmakers had in mind.

Does anyone have any leads for a supplier/manufacturer that makes a
complete ground effects kit for the DeLorean? Note: not a lowering kit.
Apparently, several years ago, someone did make one but apparently in
limited quantities due to low demand. I've posted this question a
couple of months ago, but all leads (actually only 2 people replied)
turned up negative. Perhaps there is enough interest to have them made
if enough DeLorean owners are interested (just a thought) and no current

Subject: DML: AC Delco 144 amp Alternator
It was very nice to meet several of you DMLers in Columbus earlier this
month. I went straight to the warehouse after three hours of sleep and a
10-hour drive from Missouri on Saturday and wasn't too socially inclined
that day as I was very tired.
Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know of my experience with the
remanufactured AC Delco 144 amp "police" alternator that I had installed
that Monday by Bauerle Automotive in Radnor, Ohio. A repair shop I would
highly recommend to anyone!!
My original Ducellier alternator was removed and the AC Delco unit
installed with very little trouble despite its bigger size. They were
able to use the original Renault belt and adjustable mounting bracket
with no problems. They did have to switch the bedlt pulley from the
Ducellier to the new unit and had to remove the triangular mounting point
from the engine block and mill it down a little to fit the new
alternator. Total mechanic's time was less than two hours.
To say the new unit is a blessing would be a severe understatement. I
could never run the A/C with the Ducellier unit as the car would jerk
forwards with the A/C cycling every few seconds. Now, I can run all
lights and accessories AND the A/C with no strain on my car and the
voltmeter reading within a needle's width of 13 amps. I am quite pleased.
BTW, the new alternor only cost $115 plus a $65 core charge at O'Reilly's
Automotive and took less than three days to obtain.
Well, it is back to work, but I will write more about my journety to Ohio
later.

Wow! I finally got my very own Delorean.. It's an auto '83 with grey
interior, vin #16228.
I have a few problems I've noticed that I would like to get a little info
on how to go about fixin'.
1) When I unlock the driver's side door, the passenger side door unlocks,
but when I lock the driver's side door, the passenger side door doesn't
lock. The passenger side lock works it's magic just fine on the driver's
side lock.
2) The switch that operates the rear window defrost doesn't work, and just
loosely flops up and down. Any ideas on how much a replacement is, and
what it take to fix it?
3) The right turn signal indicator doesn't come on, but the exterior
lights
work fine. How big of a pain is it to replace a bulb back there (As that
is
probably the problem..) ? Are the bulbs available?
4) The clip that connects the washer fluid squirter to the wiper blade is
broken, ideas on prices/availability?
5) The top of the doors rub the top of the car when they open, is there a
way to adjust them not to?
6) When the auto transmission switches to 3rd, it gives a great big ol'
tug. this seems a little wrong, is it normal?
7) The high-beams don't work, I haven't check the fuse, but the indicator
light doesn't come on either, and the owners manual I have doesn't seem
real clear if the indicator is on a different fuse, does anyone know?
Those are my only concerns (which all seem fairly minor to me..) but I'd
like to get an idea on what it would take/cost to fix 'em, so I can get
her
back to tip-top. Thanks in advance!!

There are about 2,700 individual parts listed in the parts manual. Of
that total, approximately 100 are no longer available as original
equipment, and a few of those can only be obtained from parts cars
nowadays.
As far as assembling 'new' DeLoreans from the remaining NOS parts, that
is not likely to happen. Last I knew there were only three complete
fiberglass bodies left. Also, there is not a complete set of any of the
three colors of carpet used in the car left. With thatr in mind, it would
be a VERY SHORT production run.

Continuing to beat the dead horse, I add:
Last year at KAPAC, Marv Katz stated that if he finished the three cars
they had underbodies for, he would sell them in the $50K-range. Now that
Marv is no longer involved, it's up to Stephen, and there have been no
indications that he plans to finish those three.
I believe that Stephen has a set of molds to build the underbodies - I
believe Marv said that he brought over one set when they cleaned out the
factory.
After seeing the warehouse, and talking at length with Rob Grady and
Stephen, I have to ask - what parts do we need? What exactly are the
UNOBTAINABLE parts?

Okay - I don't know about the electrical systems specific to the D, but I
know how mine work, and here is the explanation: The motorised locking
system will have a switch in each door that sends a control signal to both
doors - in mine, there are two input wires, you earth one, the doors lock,
you earth the other, the doors unlock. So: When you turn the key to lock
the Drivers door, the signal is lost - i.e. you lock the door without
motors turning, and the other stays open. This is why turing the key in
the other door works fine.
Solution: Check the control wire to the Passenger door, or the switch on
the drivers door.
(This is how my car works, so don't shout if I'm completely off the track

It could be many things, but the main problem is just simply poor design
on DMC. The large lock pistons require a great deal of power to operate
and the locks on the cars require a somewhat large amount of force to
operate. The lock module located in the relay compartment is not a very
heavy built unit and is very prone to failure. I recomend that you
first
look inside the lock module, check for anything broken or burned. Then
clean the switch contacts on the inside of the doors, then make sure
the linkage is adjusted properly for smooth operation. NOW, if you don't
care about original, you can get one of those "add on" power lock kits
from just about anywhere. Replace the magnetic pistons with the new
servo motors and rewire the new module into the existing harness from the
doors.

Take the black screws out, I think there is approx 7 or 8, remove
the lamp housing, unplug the PCB, then replace the bulb. Check
for continuity on the contacts, They tend to corrode very easily.
Availablitly ? Hmmm, Try WAL-MART !! nothing special about
the bulbs.

its pure hell. Where exactly is it rubbing ?

I wouldn't worry about it, The auto trans in these cars are strange
anyway.
As long as it shifts and does it without slipping,, I would be grateful.

I'm asking $15900. Exterior and interior are in great shape.
Modifications that have been made are a Code Alarm car alarm and a

and the passenger's window motor needs work.
