Hello DML,
Maybe someone can help shed some light on some problems I'm having with my
new DMC-12.
I bought my DMC two months ago. It ran rough, but decent. It stalled
when
the tank got to about 3/4 full, and it had problems starting cold. I
replaced the thermoswitch which helped for a bit, but then it still had
problems starting. I decided to work on the stalling problem instead. I
opened the fuel tank and virtually everything was mangled or gone,
including the entire suction hose (the reason it stalled at 3/4 of a
tank).
I replaced everything from the baffle to the pump and then started the
engine. It actually started pretty quick and sounded good. I decided to
replace the rotor, cap, wires and plugs (no easy chore .. who designed
this
engine anyway?). The car always ran real rough when it was first started
so I was hoping the replacing off all of these would help. Anyway, once
everything was back together, the engine would turn over and sound good
for
about 1/2 a second, then die instantly. It would do this 2x, then never
even turn over unless it sat for 3 minutes. I checked all the connections
and I got everything back the way it was before. I went ahead and put 7
gallons in the tank and put in chevron/techron concentrate. After about 2
hours of off and on trying to start it, it eventually turned over. It was
VERY rough and barely got going. Now it is still able to start, but only
after about 10-15 cranks, but it does sound better then that first start.
The cold start valve is firing fine, so I'm not sure where to turn from
there. If I shut off the engine, it starts right back up, but if it sits
for 10 minutes, it won't.
When I finally got the car to turn over and stay, I let the car idle for a
bit. It sounded very bad and eventually got a little better. I got
adventuresome and got it on the road. The throttle was useless. I would
step on the peddle and the car would act like it was displeased with me.
It would just chug uncontrollably and not accelerate at all. If I let off
of the peddle, it sounded much better and actually had better
acceleration.
To me, it seemed like the air intake butterflys were working, but that
the
fuel wasn't being added to compensate for the air when the throttle was
depressed. Slow acceleration worked a bit better, but still was
undriveable.
Also, the engine is overheating for the first time since I've been driving
the car. The fan is kicking on fine. Is this from the 100 attempts to
start the car and then running it in idle forever? Any other areas to
check? My temperature gauge works at least!
ALSO, my driver window decided to stop functioning today. It was working
fine this morning. I took out the switch and tried to lower it by
clicking
the contacts directly (in case the switch wasn't seated properly), and no
luck. Any suggestions?
Other interesting things (for those interested):
1) When I got the fuel distributor wires back on, fuel leaked everywhere.
The copper washers are very important, as is the 100 inch/lbs of torque.
2) The low speed idle microswitch (if that's what it's called), wasn't
being activated when the throttle was released. It had to be adjusted to
work. Also, there is another microswitch for the maximum range of the
throttle (there is no way my throttle would ever trigger this). What is
this switch? Activating it didn't do much.
3) Tankzilla is great. The tail light replacement boards are awesome.
The
doorstrut replacements are great.

The Automatic Transmission in the delorean is a little lame. My 81'DMC
is
an automatic and never shifted properly from purchase in 81. Last week I
replaced the automatic transmission governor (586 dollars) in hopes that
i'd
be able to use first gear. After installed the car ran really well for a
change. The next day i took it out, and it was running fine. I stopped
at a
stop light, and when the light turned green i hit the gas like usual, but
instead the car didn't move, it just reved as if it was in neutral. I
tried
over and over again shifting from park to drive with no luck. I towed it
back and raised it. Everything was installed properly and the linkage was
good. So now i am completely lost, could anyone help me? Is the whole
transmission gone?

Automatic to stick conversion..? I did the opposite. Trans mounts are
not the same. The automatic has different mounts that are no longer
available. The pedal housing is not the same. This is a major job that
will require a lot of work. I like my car as an automatic much more
than the stick. The automatic keeps in the engine in a high torque
range with a lot less work than the stick.

If none of the gears work, including reverse. It would seem like a loss
in Hydraulic Pressure due to a faulty pump or even low fluid. Be sure
your fluid level is correct. This subject could go on forever because
there is so much that can go wrong in the Auto Trans .

Subject: DML: .. My fix list continues ..
Howdy all!
Well, I'm loving being a Delorean owner, these last couple weeks have been
a constant adrenaline rush. I just got some Scotchbrite pads yesterday
and
I am totally blown away with how well they work! Now I've never really
done any work with cars, as far as restoring a damaged paint job, but I
would imagine that it is a million times harder than just brushing the
surface with a scouring pad, that's for sure. The panels on my D were in
(what I thought) pretty bad shape, lots of scuffs and scratches against
the
grain of the brushed finish, but they were just "lifted" away with that
scotchbrite. I am finding it pretty difficult to remove the dust left
behind, it seems to find it's way into the finish... Any nifty tricks for
de-dusting? Does that "california duster" work with
stainless? Or should I just wash the car a few times to work it all out?
I do have a few more questions regarding the restoration of #16228:
1) I'm looking for a few replacement parts, and I was wondering about
prices/availability if anyone knows:
a. drivers side and passenger side door vents
b. ashtray
c. cigar lighter and socket
d. the little rubber piece at the base of the auto trans stick shift.
e. engine compartment prop (I have the metal loop, but the attachment is
gone, and the engine compartment cover seems to have some wear around
where
the prop holds it open, do I need a new compartment cover too? )
2) The wipers don't "come back" when I stop them.. Any Ideas?
3) The delay wiper mode seems to give a little "burst" of about 4", then
stops, it'll do that until it slowly inches across the windshield and
back.. Humorous, but not too useful..
4) On my auto trans:
a. I shift into drive, and it seems to shift into second for the first
little bit of the car running.
b. 2nd and 1st seem to do the same thing, they'll both start in 1st and
shift into second.
Now, this isn't much of a problem, as I can obviously shift into 1st, then
shift into drive when I need to, until the car "warms up" to working in
drive, but It's a little odd, and I'd like things to be working "right".
5) I heard someone was going to be posting how to "rebuild" the rear
window defrost switch. I have several little copper parts inside the
switch, none of which seem to be broken, but it looks as though I may be
missing something, any info on this would be great!
Thanks again!

The fender is easy.
I've tracked the headliner material back to Germany where it was

The fabric to my knowledge was a special fabric for the DeLorean and is
not
used anywhere else so to find the exact weave is not likely. I have found
fabric that is close and the correct thickness 1/8" although most people
find
the 1/4" material easier to handle.

I think they're about $15 each - any of the DeLorean parts houses should
be able to get them for you. Another item that I saw a box full of was
the glove box latches, these are also VW parts. It'd be interesting to
know what the Volkswagen/Porsche equivalent items cost.

Ed Pryor asked:
> Question: What is the fastest speed you have driven your Delorean?
I once got mine up to 80 mph on the freeway, but then I backed down
and I will never do it again (well, maybe on a race track . . .).
Years ago I used to have a Trans Am with a 6.6 liter V-8. I drove that
car well into the triple digits every day for many years. Eventually I
killed
the engine driving it so hard, but I got the need for speed worked out of
my system.
I treat my DeLorean like a lady. I want her to last forever.
There is also a "public relations" reason why I don't drive my DeLorean
very fast. People expected my Trans Am to be driven by an obnoxious,
rude teenager who is a menace to everyone on the road, and back then I
was happy to oblige them. Today they don't know what to expect from a
DeLorean, and whatever I do they will remember.
When I drive my DeLorean I know I am in the spotlight. If I drive like an
*sshole it will leave a lasting, bad impression. I don't want people to
think
of the DeLorean as a car for obnoxious young males with testosterone
poisoning. I want them to think of it as a gentleman's car.
So I always drive my DeLorean with skill and courtesy. I don't drive
like a
jerk and I don't drive like a grandma. In speed and style I drive like a
gentleman.

At one time I was considering finding a locking glove box latch
that I saw advertised somewhere, probably in DeLorean World. Now
that I may have something more valuable than gloves in there (for
car shows, etc.) is there a locking latch available still/again?
Maybe the equivalent VW/Porsche part may have a locking unit?

I, too, considered putting a locking glove box latch on my car, and
posted a similar request here on the list a LONG time ago. I was
persuaded that it was probably not a good idea in light of the
considerable damage that could be done by a thief getting in the glove
box. While I think you could argue the case either way, it was not worth
the potential damage to me.

Just a quick addition to Mike's post. I don't know what the police are
like in the States as regards speeding (I know it varies greatly from
state to state), but here in England, I always drive my
inconspicuous-common-as-muck Citroen at 85-90 mph, and in the two years of

The owner of one of the D's that was in Birmingham got stopped doing 75mph
