Yep, that's most likely it. The gov. computer in our automatics are junk. I doubt you'd be able to replace it with a computer from another car though.. They run about $500 (US) , so you're looking at a pretty expensive job.
I heard a while back that someone was re-manufacturing the computers to be more reliable... Any news on that from the folks that know?

The white lettering is actually stickers that owners put in themselves. The black imprint itself is factory original. The white lettering is not. If you follow Concours or want your D to be as original and factory stock as possible, you won't put these in.
I think, just like the Dealer Stripes on the sides of the D's, the white lettering was offered at one time. I know that you can still buy these stickers at either Ed's, Stephen's or Rob Grady's.

That lettering on the bumper is acually stainless steel letters placed in the imprint that is on all of the bumpers. I dont know if any DeLoreans came like this, but I do know that they are availible from DeLorean One. I have also seen an "Outline" of the letters in stainless steel, but I dont know if D1 carries that. I personally prefer the leters themselves.

DeLorean Limited Edition Model Kits
It is looking like the Kits will be shipped in time for Christmas, cross your fingers.......
Any one still interested should send their e-mail address to me at lseiler@radiance.com or lee@totalimmersion.com. There is quite a waiting list but as I have said before, people do cancel their reservations and drop off the active list.
I just sent out the November up-date to the current reservation list but for got one small item. We are printing the kit box labels now, these include the Kit number 1 to 100 and the name of the person the Kit is reserved for right on the box label.
One final note: Kit number 001 originally set aside for JZD is now back on the list or block as it were! and will be available. I have not thought of a way to offer this very special JZD kit. Any suggestions are welcome.
You may send your suggestions to me directly or The god of this forum willing to this list. I should point out that I was mistaken in thinking that JZD would accept one of these kits and now find my self in the embarrassing position of having made no provisions as to what to do with it in the event JZD was not interested, I am not sure how to deal with the extra kit.
Thanks

You will probably notice if looking closely at the strut, where the allen key inserts into it is split preventing the torsion bar bracket from coming off. The only solution is to eventually replace the torsion bar. This probably should be done soon because supply is starting to become limited.

Joe,
The white letters you see are actually "stainless steel" letters that are applied by double stick on tape. They are stuck onto the bumper where it spells "delorean" with perfect fitting. These stainless steel letters that spells DeLorean are available from DeLorean One, for about $65.00. They were guaranteed to be replaced if they ever fell off. I don't know if they still have the same policy. Mine has been on for 33 months and haven't fallen off yet. As a matter of fact, I can't remove mine for I would like to repaint my bumper black.
FYI. They also make stick on letters for both the panels of the door sills. They are six letters. Three for each door sill spelling "DMC." They also cost $65.00 a set and available from DeLorean One.
Just for the vanity and for the looks of the car with no other significance.

It's a metric allen (don't recall the size). You need to use a long "T" Handle type. Also recommended is to use some putty or some kind of seal while adjusting this because the small vacuum leak can cause mis-adjustments. A 1/4 turn is alot, so remember the exact position where you started.

Hello
I had the same problem with the DeLorean Automatic. I had to replace the computer gov. for the trans. It is a very straight forward process and not difficult. 3 hours time. They go bad because of voltage spikes from the fans up front and from jump starting the car. The "FANZILLA" that P.J. Grady sells helps to soften the voltage spikes by turning on the fans one at a time. ((((The Stock with the blue relay or the jumper wire they come on 2 at time NOT A GOOD "FIX" TO A BAD PROBLEM))).
Computer Cost $400.00 from a DeLorean Supplier Fanzilla Cost $ Priceless from P. J. Grady
1.Remove the transmission Pan after draining the fluid.
2. You will see how the computer is attached inside the trans.
3. Remove the inside switches and connections.
4. Follow the computer wires to the connection inside the boot and disconnect the electrical connection from the main harness.
5. Reverse the order for installation of new computer.
6. While you are inside the trans. REPLACE THE SHIFT SOLENOIDS. and clean/replace the transmission filter((((IMPORTANT! EVERY 10,000 miles)))))
7. Add 3.9 quarts of dextron III trans fluid.
8. Make sure everything is fit and secure, check fluid levels and road test.
I had to replace the entire transmission $4,000 plus shipping, etc.etc. To all automatic transmission owners, replace the fluids every 10,000 miles and clean out the filter every 10,000 miles. If you can find a place that flushes the entire transmission all 9 quarts of dextron III, have it preformed.
P.S. I have sold six copies of Stainless Steel Illusion. I have 2 left, 1 I will keep. If any one is interested please E-Mail me.
Sincerely Michael Pack

What ranges of RPM does the delorean operate at? (i.e. 750 - 3000 RPM)
Also, I have recently looked at a delorean and the RPM needle seemed to be stuck on 2000, even know the engine was off..is this normal?? I didn't get to start the engine to see if it gave any readings..
Are the gauges difficult to replace?

I have a lead on a DeLorean dealership sign for sale in Louisiana. Email me for me more details. Bear in mind that the sign in three feet high by twelve feet in length and about a foot wide, weighing over 300 pounds. Read: expensive to ship.

While in Dunmury Ireland last year at Eurofest '97, I had the pleasure of speaking with a gentleman "Joe" who worked in the factory. One of his jobs was to outline the lettering on the rear bumpers of some cars with white paint. This was done for publicity photos. The embossed letters on the black bumper would not show up in the photographs.

JAR, Here are the RPM spec's. IDLE SPEED 775 RPM + OR - 50, MAX. OUTPUT (HORSEPOWER) 5500 RPM, REDLINE 6000 RPM. When the ignition is shut off the tachometer needle will park at the last RPM reading. The DeLorean tach has a very low failure rate and should not need replacement for the life of the car. DMC Joe / DeLorean Services dmcjoe@att.net

Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 00:16:30 EST From: ShadowDMC@aol.com Subject: DML: Another body damage question
I have finally taken a list of all the dings that my car has (no dents). I'm thinking of fixing these dings pretty soon. After an intrepid search of the backissues I beleive this has not been adressed yet. So is there any place in the car in which dings cannot be removed or any special place where the stainless steel cannot be worked on? The one of the previous owners of my car used putty and paint in a very clever way to hide the dings. I finally took off the paint and the putty to see how bad it actually was and it looks repariable.
Thanks in advance

I am very proud to say that I will be purchasing Delorean #5252 Monday and driving it home. One of the few things that does not work on this car is the speedometer. Can someone provide me with the mph by how many rpm that the tach is showing? (It is a 5 speed) 35mph thru 75mph would be a great help, with the readings in 4th and 5th gears. I would hate to raise my insurance rates on my first drive.

I am currently restoring VIN 002156, and have run into a problem registering the car. The previous owner has not registered the car for over 3 years, so the DMV has removed all records of it from their database. Anyway, the car will not pass smog. I live in California, the most stringent smog requirements in US. Basically, it needs a catalytic converter among other small things. Has anyone replaced theirs? Does the Volvo counterpart for the B28F work for the cat as well? I have heard a lot of talk on the list about hollowing out the cats, but nothing about replacing them (or reconditioning the old one, if this is possible) Thanks for any info. I will keep updating the progress of the restoration.

Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 01:03:33 -0600 From: "Daniel McGauley" <hawkeye@creativeworlds.com> Subject: DML: Gerald Scotti interview
Dear DML,
In preparation for the DeLorean movie I'm producing, I met with Gerald Scotti and his fiancee several times over the past weekend. Since he's an integral part to DeLorean, the man, I thought I'd let everyone know a little about the visit. My wife (screenwriter) and I took Gerald and his fiancee Ashley out to eat at Pagani's in Los Angeles Saturday evening. He doesn't look too different than he did during the DeLorean trial. For those of you who don't know, Gerald Scotti was the DEA agent who was heading the drug sting against William Morgan Hetrick, and eventually became involved with the bust against DeLorean. He eventually quit the DEA out of digust for how they were treating him when he began to question the DEA's tactics in obtaining DeLorean. He ended up testifying for DeLorean and ultimately sealed the case for the defense.
Scotti is now a defense lawyer in Los Angeles, specializing in narcotics! Too funny. He's one of the friendliest people I've ever met and he trusted me with all of his important documents and videos during that era, most of which were quite enlightening. He told numerous hysterical anecdotes that I'll try to put into the movie. I'm sort of out of time to tell them all, but the best had to be that when they were doing the sting on DeLorean, they were using the same t.v. for the video surveillance (hidden camera in the t.v.), and the same tropical clock for the audio bug in every hotel room DeLorean was frequenting. Scotti said they had no idea how DeLorean never recognized the same clock and t.v. in every hotel he was visiting during that time, especially since they were so unique looking.
My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton La Reina where DeLorean was busted. We talked with several of the staff that were there that evening. We had room 501 reserved, but they were redecorating the entire 5th floor, so the actual room was off limits, but we stayed in the only other room with the same layout as room 501 (room 601).
We also visited several other of the key areas that were part of the DeLorean drug bust, but I'd have to say the Gerald Scotti meeting proved the most inspirational. I really admire a man that would stand up to defend a man that he didn't think to highly of in the first place, even though he knew his career with the DEA would be over. His story is rarely told, but it will be soon!

Our Delorean is missing a screen on the engine hood. One of the smaller ones on the right side I priced one a while back from one of the suppliers and they wanted $41.00 for it. Anybody have or know where I might find one a bit cheaper.

I would just like to suggest that you can now buy long reach allen wrenches in inexpensive sets. They work very well. Autozone, O Riley, etc sell them for less that $10.00. The 3mm is about 8 inches long which is more than enough. Jordan Gary

Is one of them the CPI index? CPI = Cars of Particular Interest. It is a good book to have, and what I used in getting a loan for my '87 Ferrari.
I was thinking about getting a Delorean and I'll probably use some book source as a price refference for my credit union. The more information you provide, the easier it is to get a loan. ;-) Can you forward the name and publisher of each source you have with a Delorean listed to the list? I;m sure others would like the information.
Thanks in advance, Dave Quick

There is a RPM to MPH table located at:
http://www.dmcnews.com/misc/rpm2mph.html
it also tells MPH per thousand of RPM in all gears for both automatic and manual transmission cars. John Truscott originally provided me with this infomration many years ago.
