This is regarding a post intended for the moderator that was inadvertantly passed on to the list. At the request of the originator the post has been deleted from the archives and was blocked from the digest version. Unfortunately it is not possible to recall real-time email distribution. If you are reading on the web or get the digest version, you won't see the post I'm referencing.
As this was an honest mistake due to the mechanics of moderation (I'm currently trying to convince Dick NOT to resign over this), and the originator has asked for the efforts to be made to recall it, I'm considering the topic closed. Past experience has shown this sort of issue not to be healthy for the list. Many more people object to it than want to foster it. Future postings on this thread, both pro or con, will be deleted without comment.
Feel free to post to moderator(AT)dmcnews.com of you'd like to comment futher directly to the moderator team.

Gentlemen, Having fixed just about all the major issues that have presented themselves in the course of my ownership of my D, a new one has popped up. There seems now to be a lot of give in the steering. That is to say, that when driving I can move my wheel a few degrees and nothing happens to direct the wheels in a different direction. Is it the tie rod? If so is there a cross reference? I only have 40,000 miles so I am concerned about what might be causing this. I have cars (2) with over 150,000 and have not had tie rod issues yet on them.....
Any help is always most appreciated.

Hello DMLers,
I live in Canada and I don't own a DeLorean (yet.) As you can guess, there aren't many of them at all here, and I would really like to get in touch with someone who owns one. If you do, or you know someone who does, please let me know.
Thanks, Kevin

Dan, It appears as if you have your AC compressor confisued with you alternator. The loud click you heard is the compressor clutch engaging which also switches on the cooling fans. This explains why the fans continued to run even after you unplugged the otterstat switch. When you started to drive the car the compressor clutch released and the fans shut off.
Your AC compressor should only operate when one of the three AC positions is selected on your AC/heater switch.

---------- From: Danrc30 <Danrc30(AT)hotmail.com>
Yesterday when I went to start my car, I heard a loud CLICK from the engine, and the cooling fans came on. The engine was completely cold. The key was only in the "on" position. Upon further inspection, I realized the click was coming from the alternator. It seemed like it wanted to engage even when the car was off. I then started the car and shut it back off to see if the alternator was just stuck or something. But nothing changed. I unplugged one of the connections to the otterstat switch, but the fans stayed on. The only way I could shut them off was to pull the jumper wire in the relay area. So, then I decided to drive the car anyway to see if it would fix itself. And, sure enough, it did. As soon as I pulled it out of the garage, the fans went off and all was back to normal.
My question is; what happened here? Is this a common occurance? Is this a symptom that something really bad is about to happen to my car? Anyone else have this happen to them? Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave,
Save yourself a lot of phone calls and driving from parts dealer to parts dealer. The upper ball joints are readily available from your friendly DeLorean parts supplier for around $50. Just call one of their 800 numbers first thing in the morning and ask for part # 10927. For a few extra bucks for shipping you could have the exact replacement at your doorstep Tuesday morning; what could be easier.
You will also feel good that your order helped to "keep the dream alive" by supporting our DeLorean parts suppliers.
I almost forgot to answered you initial question. We know of no reliable cross reference for the upper ball joints.

Lets determine weather or not you are losing power to the fuel pump while you are driving. Set up the following test: Access the fuel pump and run a test wire from the positive post through the hole in the firewall where the hood release cable goes through. Once inside the car hook your 12v test light between the test lead from the pump and ground. To be sure that the problem is not ground related jump the inertia switch during this test.
Let me know your results.

I have yet to see information concerning the use of synthetic motor oil in our DMC's. Do any of you have any recomendations, or know of any problems with using synthetic motor oil.
Also what kind do you use.
Thanks,

I have been reading alot of the e-mails with alot of different key code numbers in the e-mail. I guess I missed the start of all of this, but I was able to get a key copied at a local locksmith here in San Diego. He just used a standard Volvo key blank.
Is there any way that I can purchase an original key, or a replica of the original key- with the black plastic etc... I purchased my car from the original owner and he had lost the original key! :-(
Thanks,

The first and easiest item to check is your wheel bearings. Because of the very tight tolerances in the racing grade suspension the slightest amount of play of the front wheels will cause steering "drift". Do you know how to check your wheel bearings ? If not contact us directly for assistance.

It is most likely the universal joints between the steering and rack & pinion. They are little fragile bearings that need frequent replacement.

I started mine at 3,500 miles and continued using it to 125,000 miles. The engine doesn't burn a drop of oil. I started with Amsoil. They were expensive and also had synthetic gear oil for my manual transmission. I have since use all brands (Moble, Castrol etc.) without any problems. The only thing I look for is NOT a synthetic blend and the viscosity. Some synthetics get very thin.

How far have you looked Carson?
The DML archives are chocked full of comments, pro and con, on the use of synthetics in the DeLorean. (Or in anything else for that matter.)
My 2 cents worth.....save you money. Use only what the manufacturer recommended.

Mark, I had a problem that sounds a lot like what you are experiencing. My car would start fine in the morning and fine after it had been running for awhile but when it sat out in the sun on a warm California day (usually in the parking lot at work) it would not start. I would remove the plug from the cold start valve (blue plug) and put the control pressure regulator plug (gray plug) on to the cold start valve and it would start up. Essentially this is force feeding fuel into what turned out to be a starved fuel system. When I would put the plugs back on to their correct components it would fire up. It worked every time. I finally figured out the problem, it was the RPM relay going out. After replacing the relay the problem disappeared. Hope this helps, -SweatyEddy #6564

I found some stuff this weekend called Blue Magic metal polish. I got it at Kmart. It's decently cheap, and it had worked like, well, magic on mine. You can tell a supreme difference between the panels I've done and not done. I would also suggest a buffer, because it makes life a lot easier. They also make a wheel cleaner, and it's also just as incredible.

I forget the details of the original post but you may have thrown a wheel weight causing one wheel to vibrate. This may give you that "speed bump" sensation.
I'm always amazed to see people driving cars on the freeway with one wheel bouncing violently. These are the opposite of those who drive cars that look like the shocks fell out giving them the "smooooth" ride.

I had the same problem with my D. I had to replace both the steering U joints to fix the problem. Definately not exactly the cheapest of fixes. If your lucky like I was, you'll find somebody who's got an extra one around thats in good shape otherwise you'll be spending upwards of $500 for the parts. If your unsure how to check those joints, let me know. I'm on my way down to VA in a few weeks. I'm no expert, but I do know from experience what I had to do for mine.

Symptom: "I'm driving along and the car slows down as though it is running out of gas" ... it probably is.
Make sure your fuel pickup is not bending as you accelerate. I had a problem once where the car would not run in forward but ran fine in reverse and idled fine. I replaced the fuel pickup line (bottom of pump) and solved the problem In my case, the stud in the bottom of the tank is missing causing the old and tired fuel pickup to move around. It eventually kinks and restricts the fuel flow. I now have a short stiff tube that goes straight down with little option for flexing.

I recall that one of the reasons Gull Wing doors were selected for the Delorean, in addition to looks, was that they were safer that conventional doors. Supposedly they would take up to a 35 MPH side impact without impinging on the driver.
On the other hand, side impact injuries are usually the result of the occupant hitting the car and not the car hitting the occupant (that old momentum law).

Sorry fellow enthusiasts -- but I just got an offer to good to refuse on a 78 Ferrari 308 GTS. Unfortunately money and garage space (and a wife who doesn't understand that cars are more than transportation!) force me to sell my beloved DMC. It is a late 1982 model (no gas flap / creased hood) painted a glorious Ferrari emron red with the grey interior. Lowered with polished wheels and a custom dual exhaust. I am the second owner, bought from California collector two years ago. New tires, fuel pump & acccumulator, master and slave clutch cylinders, water pump & hoses, brake master and slave cylinders plus pads & ss brake lines -- all within last year. All upgrades done. Fanzilla added. Nothing for you to do but drive it. 28,000 miles. Always garaged and covered. body and interior perfect - A genuine head turner. The price for all this - a mere $18K. Car is located in San Antonio, Texas. Contact me at longstad(AT)earthlink.com. Also posted in DMC news ads.

I did enjoy seeing all the old archived film footage. It was nice that it was presented as seemingly unbiased (IMO), without the personal attacks that are usually present about the man or the car. They mainly stated factual information. They did put a little bit of a positive on it, at the end when they said it was made a star in the bttf films. They just needed to ad one more thing " the delorean has an ever-present loyal following too this day thru collectors and enthuesiests"IMO

This is true! The practical side of the gullwing doors aside from creating extra entering/exiting space is for resistance in a side impact collision. Because of the high sill, and the side impact beam, the DeLorean is a much safer car, at least for its time, from a side impact standpoint. This can be seen in "Back From The Future" when John Z himself explains this reasoning.

Mike -
Check to ensure it's not a cracked gear in the window transmission. These gears are notorious for crapping out. I bought 2 new gears and my windows work as good as new.
To check your motors here's what you need to do...
Disconnect the window motor from the window arm (one screw on the top and bottom) and plug it back into the connectors...if it doesn't spin then check to ensure it's getting power (apply a volt meter to the connectors).
Hope this helps.

In a dyno test, your car is placed on rollers similar to those used at many modern emissions testing facilities. The front wheels are locked into place somehow and the rear wheels spin the rollers. The rollers are a known weight. By entering in the gearing and tire size of your car and measuring how quickly the rollers can be accelerated to a given speed, the computer in the dyno can calculate the amount of horsepower produced by the car.
The results of this type of dyno (a "chassis" dyno) measure the amount of power at the wheels. Typically this is about 15% less than the engine actually produces, due to drivetrain losses. The DeLorean's 130HP rating is engine horsepower, so a stock DeLorean in good condition would read about 100-110 HP on a chassis dyno.
You can measure engine output directly with an engine dyno, however this requires removing the engine from the car and so is much less common.

I didn't like the show very much. Much of the information presented was wrong, including the dates of production, the reasons behind JZD's arrest, and the involvement of Lotus. The program seemed to be focused entirely on the silliness of the British government - the first half of the program, which was nominally about the Spruce Goose, spent fully half the time talking about the failure of a similar British development effort. The DeLorean half of the program was similarly filled with repeated statements that the British government was foolish for not overseeing the company more carefully.
That said, I liked the old footage too. I hadn't seen much of it previously.

Thank you to everyone who took part in my contest to guess what the "Myster= y Piece" that was found in my car is (http://www.egroups.com/docvault/dmcne= ws/mystery.jpg). Here is the story behind this rather peculiar item:
While driving my DeLorean across the country last summer, my engine started= to develop a "ping" and would click rather loudly at certain revolutions. = At just over 30,000 original miles on the car, the engine was starting to = fail. Dyno testing is a test to determine Hosepower and torque at both the flywheel and rear wheels. Dyno testing can also determine any problems with the engine as far as induction or exhaust, depending on what kind of dyno it is and who does it.

dynomometer testing tests the power output of an engine. This is down either with the engine on a test stand (you see this in Hot Rod or Car Craft Magazines) or at the wheels output.
The car drive wheels are put onto a large drum that is geared to a water wheel in a large tank. As the wheels turns they generate heat in the water by friction which is a measure of the horsepower output of the car.
This is the first test of deloreans that actually will measure the output of car at the wheels. This is the best measure to compare performance. Lastly, year we tested a stock 5 speed. It put out 100 HP and 134 ft lb torque at the wheels. Note: a highly tuned big block camaro was tested last year with 398 HP and 400 fl lb torque at the wheels.
Hope to see you there.

The program *was* called "History's Greatest Blunders" so we should expect the entire content of the show to be the naming of the blundering party and the details of their blunder. As far as I am concerned, The History Channel did place the blame correctly on the British Government, who made some incredibly stupid deals with JZD. They also described the blunder somewhat accurately, although they left out and distorted many details.
History Channel was trying to make a case that the DeLorean project was a colossal blunder. The information that most DMLers would like to see, like production dates, QAC practices, JZD's arrest, and the current state of DeLoreans in the world, was unimportant to making their case.
Notice that they compared the DeLorean to the Edsel, not the more logical Bricklin or Tucker. They could have chosen the Edsel as the subject for the show, but decided that the DeLorean was a bigger blunder. Perhaps the reason for this choice was that they planned to blame the British government for the DeLorean blunder, making it more worthy of a documentary.
BTW I think the copyright date said 1997, although I have been watching History Channel for years and have never seen this segement before.
Re: the old factory footage:
In much of the footage, The cars had their VINs displayed in large numbers on their bumpers. Throughout the documentary, the same batch of DeLoreans was shown over and over. They were all early 81s, most with VINs in the 10xx range.
Did any DMLers see their own cars on TV?

Last night I popped one of the front wheels off and saw that almost all the stuff around the brakes(excuse the un-technical discription) including the frame sections and arms that hold everything together was covered....no caked with what had to be 18 years of grease and brake dust.Since I wanted to start cleaning this up to start doing some brake work on the car I started cleaning it off the best I could but the only stuff that would loosen it up was engine degreaser. Did I make a big mistake here by putting that on there?..can it be detrimental to the frame and other metal pieces?.....I did find that some little areas need some touching up to gaurd againt rust in the future but thankfully nothing major....My neighbor stopped by to see what I was up to and mentioned that I might want to leave all the grease on there to "gaurd" against rust....could that be true? I know I'd much rather know what under all that greast and fix it up then have it "guarding" the metal fo sure.....So here's the big question....whats a good cleaner to get all the grease and other stuff off all the pieces in the whell well (I'd like to clean up the actual black under body too if possible).....maybe a power washer?( I thought that might not be a good idea blowing water into areas around the frame) Any ideas or suggestions would be hightly appreciated...... Sorry for not making this clear....
The interview with John DeLorean speaking of the advantafes of the Gullwing design was about halfway through the documentary "Back FROM The Future" produced by list member Robert Lamrock. I believe that they are available through the DOA still at their on-line store.
This is not to be confused with Back To The Future the film.

The car was a 1980 BMW M1 It appeared to be a 2seat sports coupe the design was strikingly similar too a Delorean/Lotus Espri Hybrid concept. It was listed (AT) $85,000 . Is this a rare prototype or an actual production model? I have to say its the sharpest looking BMW I've ever seen. The front end looks delorean and back end looks espri.

We are going to dyno tune marty's turbo delorean as the final event. We are also going to test the Super Charged D from Glenn & Sons Auto. And test a stock automatic D.
If you have never seen dyno testing of a car or dyno tuning one this is a very interesting experience. The is the first time this has been done for the D. Contact me a 630 325-2083 if you are coming.

The Architectural Digest "Motoring" was the premier issue. It just came out. It is slick and fancy, but, IMHO is simply capitalizing on the current fat economy. It is sort of like the Robb Report - it's got cars, but sure isn't a true enthusiasts magazine. I'd would be much kinder if the DeLorean had any real mention - good or bad.

I disagree with you Claude, on your thoughts about the British Government. In fact, the British Government knew how the money was spent since they had people at the board. Also, the GPD scandal has often been blamed on Chapman/DeLorean. But what other fails to realize is that this deal was APPROVED by the British Government, that is, the Bank of England. Most of the money had to be approved by the Government prior to being used on anything.
The problem was really that the Government changed, from Labour to Conservatives, and the Conservatives would fullfill the previous Governments deal with the DeLorean. Funds and export guarantee were cut off, and the company folded. The biggest blunder however was that is cost the British taxpayer a lot more to close the factory that it would have cost to keep the company alive...
Political skirmish? Yes!

DMCers,
Has anyone any good recommendations for plain grey cloth seat covers for the DeLorean? I'm looking for something simple ... no patterns, no texture (fake sheepskin, etc), and a snug fit.
Cheers, IAN (#6425)

At the recent Frankfurt Auto Show, BMW unveiled a concept car, the Z9 Gt.
" The Z9 . . . uses gullwing doors that run the full length of the passenger cabin. When open, these doors give passengers full access to all four seats. But there is also, built within the gullwing door structure, a conventional door which allows easy access for the driver and front-seat passenger" according to Roundel: The Magazine of the BMW Car Club of America, Inc. See the November, 1999, issue for a press photo on page 61.

Erik,
Is it your whole dashboard or just the binnacle that's cracked? DMC and DeLorean One both sell binnacles for around 300 dollars or so.

Carson,
As far as I know, the only thing NC has is the antique tag, which truly doesn't bring any extra benefits.

Last night was the first night I have gotten to really use my heater and the fans for it. After doing this most of the day, I found that after cutting the car completely off, the fans would run for 2 or 3 extra seconds. Also, the horn quit working yesterday. Now, I know the horn has problems about getting wet and not working, but how about those fans? Is that a relay problem? I haven't tackled the relays yet, was planning on doing that next month, so I don't know if they have been updated or not. Thanks!

This morning I noticed some hesitation in 1st gear (5 speed with a single turbo) and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I had to press the pedal all the way to the floor and once it hit 2000 to 2500 it seemed normal again. Just it seemed slower in getting there. The other gears and speeds seemed fine from an acceleration standpoint. Thanks for your support.

The M1 was a joint venture with BMW and ferrarri. The engine was from ferrarri. Dont know if it was a V-8 or a V-12. But this car was from late 70's early 80's. Italdesign did the styling on it. The car was sold in small quantities in the U.S. (less than 500 if i recal the facts) and was discontinued when ferrarri wanted out of the deal. Hot looking car though with lots of lines similar to other ItalDesign cars of the period (DMC12, Esprit, Maserati, Izuzu impulse). I would take it to be a very hot collectors item, meant to be seen and not driven :^( unlike D's.

While on vacation a few years ago I saw a very sharp looking BMW at an exoctic car dealership. I had never seen anything like it either, and the guy said it was not for sale. I dont think it was a prototype but just a very limited production car. That was the only one I have ever seen.

The BMW M1 was a production car. They had one on diplay at the BMW Visitors' Center at their Greer, South Carolina manufacturing plant. Another one came and was a part of their Euro '99 car show which, by the way, had 4 DeLoreans show up. It was a great show. The BMW on the show field was for sale and the for sale sign said $85000 or trade.

Is it possible to just by the binnicle (is that how it is spelled) without the instuments inside? Or do I have to buy it all in one piece? All my instuments work GREAT...never a problem, but the grey "hump" is cracked in many places from the sun. New ones from DMC Houston cost $600+ for the whole thing. OR, does anybody know how to cover up cracks...short term of coarse. I will replace it eventually. thanks alot
