Well it seems that all insurance places are out to get me....thats
probably not true but it seems everyone is happy to give me liability
insurance for only like $400 more added to my current policy , but
absolutly no one will give me collision for under $5000!!....can you
beleive that . It's rediculous, and one insurance dealer told me that in
the eyes of an isurance company, my 81 D is only worth like 500
bucks.....just doesn't make sense at all. Boy, its sure nice to have my
D but it just sitting in the garage is getting old. Please help
....anyone in my predicament(19yrs old...male), and managed to get
insurance?

It is not surprising that no-one knows about 'Knight Rider' which was big in
82 and 83. The last BTTF movie was already 10 years ago. The films are
being repeated less and less.
It is quite possible in a few years that the BTTF related questions will
stop being asked when someone spots a DMC-12...
Just a thought....

BTTF movies were a product of the DeLorean?!?!? Uh, no no no.... I don't
think so. There were other items considered for the movies, but they decided
on the DeLorean.
Don't get me wrong, I love these cars too. (obviously, because I have one!)
But I think it's kinda arrogant to say that these cars had anything to do
with the creation of the movies. Sure, it played an interesting role, and no
doubt parts in the movie were changed to make the car look "cool", but I
still think there would have been the BTTF movies if the DeLorean was never
created... there just would've been another time machine other than a
DeLorean.
Besides, if that was the case, why did they use a train at the end?

Mime-Version: 1.0

My D quit running on me two days ago and left me stuck at a very busy
intersection. Luckily, I was right in front of my mechanic.
Seems the ignition coil fried...so to speak. The end, where the coil wire
attaches, was actually split in half.
I just want to make sure that this isn't the begining of something bigger.
Please tell me that it's just: "one of those things that happens with an 18
year old car". Everything was running great, etc...until this happened.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I didnt understand what you were saying:
Do you mean that it would cost you $5000 to insure it for one year?
That is insane.
And did the insurance guy tell you that in the eyes of the insurance
company the car was worth only $500 total? That is totally erroneous--
hell even the stainless steel by itself is worth more than that...You
could "part out" the car in a week and make $500. It sounds like the
man is just ignorant.
What state do you live in? What insurance companies have you check
with? Your insurance will be high anyway because you are under 21 and
male....strikes one and two...God help you if you have had a ticket or
an accident!

Carson,
You should probably add some antifreeze. I like to keep my header bottle
approximately half full. I use a 50/50 mixture of water to antifreeze.

I'm an 18 year old male and got insurance for my DeLorean--eventually.
First of all, I'm NOT listed as the primary driver of it. I'm listed under
the least valued car, the Yukon which I hardly ever drive. I'm still
covered for the other cars including the D.
We do this mainly to save money. If I was listed as the primary driver on
my daily car, a 93 Allante, my insurance would be upwards of $3000-$4000
every six months. With the Yukon, I'm paying about $900 every six months
and still have the same coverage and rights as I would paying 2-3 grand
more.
Now, I did have a problem with State Farm taking the D. They wouldn't put
it under a normal policy, it had to go under the "classic car" policy which
has limits the milage to under 2000 annually. It listed at $20,000 with a
$1,000 deductable. I think we pay $124 bucks every six months for it. (But
that's with multi car, good student discount, no reported violations)
So if you're having this much trouble you may need to insure under someone
else's name with you as a secondary driver of the car. But if you insure
that car alone with another company, don't forget that you'll pay a second
set of premiums. That's why I had to stay with State Farm.
Good luck!!

.....no lie. And as far as the car being worth $500 hundred he told me a
story about his old 442 and that he knew it was worth such and such but
to the insurance company it's just a plain old car. Supposedly they go
by year and not the car it's self or what it's worth is.

relatively active, nicely run eGroups list specifically for that purpose.
There are two ways to find it - go to the eGroups site, log in as yourself
(your email id) seach on BTTF, and sign up there, or go to their website at

Hi Don and any List members who are shopping for insurance coverage,
I checked with my insurance company and they have no problem insuring a
Delorean.
We have $100 Deductible, full replacement cost, and all the required
amounts for California. I don't know if they deal with other states but a
quick trip to their Internet page should tell you.
You can call them direct at: 818-704-3700 or try their Internet:

I pay no more for the "D" than I do for my wife's Toyota Celica.

I am curious about a few things. Is it possible to recover the front fascias
after they have been damaged by sun and heat? This is in an effort to save
the $600.00 that those things cost! Also, what of what were ALL the interior
carpet colors used. I know of gray and light grey, but was there ever a
cream color used with the cars. i could have sworn I have seen some! Any

Hello Matt,
Following are the answers to your questions:
>I just have a little question... It may be due to my lack of
>understanding in engineering but, here it goes...
>
>In your faq, you state that the original frame could handle 130 ftlbs of
>torque in the engine compartment. The original engine however had more
>toque than this(right?)
Yes, the original engine would produce something like 150 to 160 Ft. Lbs.
of torque.
>How, then, could the original frame handle the original engine? Or Can
>it? Maybe the power of the original engine is sufficient to warp the
>frame...
The original engine does indeed warp the frame. If you examine the
original frame, you can see stress cracks that have formed in the epoxy
coating. This varies based on the driving style of the owner and mileage.
Hope that helps.

After a good year I finally have a droopy driver's side door. Of course the

Don,
Not that it will help you get insurance but comments like this should be
brought to the attention of the insurance companies regional customer
support representative and/or your state insurance board. I'm sure that
agent's boss or boss's boss would be interested in how he/she handles
perspective new customers. Other than that I certainly wouldn't waste any
more effort with that company. Believe it or not there are some respectable
agents out there. I pay $500 a year for full coverage on my D, less than my
wife's Explorer. Granted, I am 35 but you should be able to piggy back on a
parents policy for much less than 5K. And if they are with that company you
spoke with before I would encourage them to go somewhere else just out of
principal. BTW I am happily insured by Liberty Mutual in California.
Good Luck,
-SweatyEddy

Well my new (to me) 83 DMC with only 37K miles has had its second major

It is leaking radiator fluid from the radiator. If you look behind the
drivers side front wheel and look at the top of the radiator you see a
cap. It looks like a cap that could be unscrewed. The leakage is
looks like it is comming from there.....
Can that cap be tightened?
Is this a common problem?

I have a chance to pick up a "spare" Volvo V6 out of a 1983 760 GLE for
$150. The owner claims the engine is "the 174 HP version". Anyone have
any idea how this engine differs from the D's PRV V6? I plan to use it
as an interim engine / parts engine until I put together the twin-turbo
motor that came with my D.
I don't know where he got that HP figure, but 174 would be an odd number
for someone to make up...
Any help from someone experienced with the Volvo end of things would be
appreciated

Subject: [DML] NLT-DMC = No Longer Totally Disassembled Motor Car
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Well,
Things are progressing slowly on #5927... As some of you may recall,
this is the totally disassembled D that I bought last month. I figured
out that for anything to be worthwhile, there has to be some sort of
12-step plan to do it, am I right? =)
Here's my plan:
step one: suspension & steering linkage
step two: running all the lines/wires along the frame
step three: reattaching the pontoon
step four: radiator
step five: fuel tank
step six: interior air box assemblies & dash reassembly
step seven: transmission and linkage
step eight: engine block
step nine: engine bolt-ons & turbos
step ten: body
step eleven: interior, windshield, rear glass
step twelve: tuning, safety checks, final touches
I'm halfway done with steps one and two. I made myself a progress chart
to make myself feel better as I go. Something like those thermometers
you see where they color in the red until someone reaches a goal. Mine
is the outline of the letters D-E-L-O-R-E-A-N-D-O-N-E. I've got half of
the first "D" and "E" filled in.
Anyway, this whole experience is going to make me a shoe-in for the
"name that part" competition at the nats, as every single piece on the
car is getting, cleaned, polished, tapped, died, rustproofed, painted
and/or otherwise treated for both appearance and functionality as I go.
So, for the great many of you who have expressed support and help &
asked to be kept in touch of the progress, here's a few things I've done
these last few weeks:
- grind, wire-brush, wire-wheel, & scrape all cracked/broken epoxy from
the frame, degrease, rustproof (Extend rust spray) and repaint the
damaged areas with Rustoleum Dark Machine Gray (35 hours)
- heat, hack, PB, liquid wrench, impact wrench and sledgehammer all of
the suspension bolts apart from the control arms (16 hrs)
- prepare all new/used suspension bolts for use (buffing, etc.) (2 hrs)
- clean & repaint control arms (1 hr)
- Dremel the heck out of the rear hub carriers until they shined like a
new nickel (4 hrs)
- paint the hub carriers with a coat of clear satin lacquer to stop
oxidation (5 minutes)
- remove and repress two new wheel bearings into the hub carriers (2 hrs
- the old ones were seized)
- wire-wheel and repaint the front spindles with Rebuilder's Touch Cast
Iron Spray (1 hr)
- sandblast upper and lower front control arms, repaint with Rustoleum
Painter's Touch Semi-Gloss Black (3 hrs)
- install 4 new ball joints (and PJ Grady stiffener on lowers) (3 hrs)
- grind, wire-brush, wire-wheel, & scrape all cracked/broken epoxy from
the trailing arms, rustproof (Extend rust spray) and repaint the damaged
areas with Rustoleum Dark Machine Gray (6 hrs)
- clean, repaint, install new bushings in steering rack assembly mounts
(2 hrs)
- install steering rack (1 hr)
- run the interior wiring harness in the body... It was so tangled it
took 6 patient hours to get it all straightened out (8hrs total)
- hack out a broken body mounting bolt (3 hrs)
- straighten, clean, paint rear brake lines & T fitting (3 hrs)
- disassemble master cylinder. It had stuff inside that looked like
gray cottage cheese. The rest was rust. It's totally toast. (2 hrs)
- clean, repaint rear spring seats (1 hr)
- clean, wire-brush, paint rear axle assemblies with clear satin (2
hours)
- clean, wire-brush, paint rear hubs with Rebuilder's Touch Cast Iron
Spray (2 hrs)
- install adjustable clutch link (5 minutes. I don't even have a clutch
yet, but someday...)
- install windshield wiper assembly (1 hr)
- complain, swear, and generally get angry because I forgot the Silastic
sealer (dumb!) (5 min)
- install windshield wiper assembly w/silastic (1 hr)
- install pedal box assembly (30 min)
- clean package shelf carpet (1 hr)
- clean, wire-brush, and repaint power brake booster (1.5 hrs)
- heli-arc weld new large fitting on evaporator core (1 hr)
- remove, identify, inspect, evaluate, sort, tag, bag and shelve all
parts from 11 boxes (25 hours)
- 3 trips to All-Foreign Auto Parts (1 hour)
- 4 trips to NAPA (4 hours)
- 7 trips to AutoZone (5 hours)
- 14 trips to Pep-Boys (12 hours)
Well, that accounts for about 125 hours right there... out of the around
300 that I've put in up to this point. I think a lot of the rest of the
time was spent by eating, drinking Dr. Pepper,
vaccuming/cleaning/organizing the garage each night, trying to find
parts I've misplaced, and other various and sundry tasks. I've
installed a 5 CD changer, and TV with cable to help break up the
monotonous sound of the air compressor.
I hope to be posting some new pics soon of the progress on the web
site... http://www.forwardlook.net/DMC
Thanks again everyone for all of your help and support!!!

Fil,
You probably have already performed the test and don't realize it. Did the
driver's door droop last year in cold weather? If not, then it is time to
replace your struts. They are a little pricey - about 65.00 each, and tightening
the torsion bar will improve things for a while, but unless you have a
KNOWLEDGEABLE person do the adjustment, you risk doing major damage to your D.
(MANY times the cost of a new strut.)

The HP numbers are good. Actually the highest naturally asperated
version of this engine could be found in the 1986 Puegot. This engine
was rated at 186 HP. The intake induction system was upgraded and so
was the cam shaft.
I do not know the numbers for the American Eagle 3.0 version. I possibly
would be slightly higher.
Do you have any performance data on your dual turbo car.

Thanks to everyone with their postings.
The problem was in the switch ground bolt and nut. The switch's ground
terminal and the hold bolt was the culprit. This is the same bolt that holds
the entire switch to the knee pad under the dash unit.
I had to slightly file the nut and the bolt's shoulder at the head and its
shaft to expose some bare metal. This helped to make a decent electrical
connection to turn the lights on the door and the interior.

I can vouch that that is complete nonsense. My DMC is insured with full
coverage with Peerless insurance up to the original replacement cost of
25,000. That's insurance companies trying to rack up. Think about it; if
you wreck it, they're not out anything as far as your replacement goes.
They've made your money back in premiums. And if you don't hit another car,
well, they're not out a dime.

In what direction do you expect DeLorean prices to go in the future, I
see that they have been going down since they were new, but as they
start getting older and rarer they'll probably start to rise again, how
long do you think it will take until the price starts rising?

Hi, fellow DeLorean lovers!
I'm pleased to announce the addition of two new pictures of Kirk Brandon's
beautiful blue DeLorean to my "Painted DeLoreans" website! Also, I altered

An e-mail was posted several weeks ago about the differences in insurance companies across the US. Could anyone provide data that they have used to convince an insurance company to reverse their decision about not covering the car? Please contact me directly at

Thanks.

Don,
Not that it will help you get insurance but comments like this should be
brought to the attention of the insurance companies regional customer
support representative and/or your state insurance board.
Good Luck,
-SweatyEddy

Dave,
The Volvo 760 GLE V-6 is a B-28F which is the same basic engine used in the
DeLorean. The owner is mistaken about the horsepower rating. There is no
factory 174 horsepower PRV. The 174 he is referring to is the cubic inch
displacement. The horsepower rating is 130.
Although this engine looks like a DeLorean PRV it varies in several areas
that does not make it easily interchangeable. Depending on the condition of
the external components the $150 may be a good deal. For example a
replacement fuel distributor costs around $700.

best way to give it a good test is to go ahead and replace the door struts.
If after that the doors still don't lift themselves, then it's an adjustment

Carson,
You have an original factory installed radiator that has a removable cap.
There is a seal under the cap that may be bad. The cap has a 21mm wrench
fitting molded at its top. You can try to tighten the cap to stop the leak.
If that doesn't work you could try to apply a sealer at the cap lip. Keep
in mind that this is a factory original radiator that is made of plastic
and is 18 years old which makes it brittle. Be very cautious when applying
pressure to any of the plastic sections.
You would be doing yourself and your DeLorean a big favor if you replace
the factory plastic radiator with an all metal replacement available from
PJ Grady and DMC Houston.

If the struts are more than two years old I would suggest you replace them.
If the torsion bars were adjusted after the car left the factory they may
need to be readjusted if new struts are not capable of opening the doors
completely.

hello guys, i recently joined this group ... out of sheer interest. the recent mails about the delorean / bttf stuff has prompt me to write (although i do respect the reminder to cut the bttf crap.... )
well, i for one had read about the delorean and the man behind it years ago, while still at school. it was in an article outlining the "failure" of the man, rather than the car itself ... but surprisingly that left an effect on me. i guess i am just one of those people who have a soft spot for the underdogs.
anyway, having lived in malaysia and australia over the years, i have never seen a delorean for real. but i did drive the first honda nsx to land in sydney on the 21 jan 1991. but to me - someone very much an unintiated delorean fan - the car has a certain kind of exoticness, unmatched by any other make.
can someone briefly tell me some stats about the delorean: how many were made, years of production, how much did they cost anew, and for how much can one expect to pick one up today.
i will be travelling to los angeles over the xmas/new year break and hope to see or even drive a real delorean. anyone willing to help ?
mr x

thanks Joe....what you said makes sense....I will have to see if i can
get a wrench on that sucker and tighten it up....
I could have sworn it looked like a metal radiator, but it was dark.
What do the newer radiators go for?
thanks again....
