How I came to know of the DeLorean is of my friend Chris Anstett about 2
years ago walking to school. We had been talking about cars, and he started
talking about that his Uncle, Chuck worked on a DeLorean, he described the
car to me and I was amazed, next week I went down to the local library to
look for books, and found a copy of Stainless Steel Illusion, and that has
started my life-long DeLorean obsession. Now 2 years later I am 13, and
have started an "Amateur" DeLorean web page that will soon be ready. ( the
URL is http://www.deloreans.com )

In response to a question from an Australian on right-hand drive
conversions and factory right hand drive DeLoreans in the 'Letters To The
Editor' section of the latest edition of DeLorean Word (Fall 1999), the
editor David Knudson, responded by stating that DMC did not produce any
right-hand drive vehicles. I find this statement to be somewhat
contradictory to general opinion, and confusing, because as far as I am
aware, DMC manufactured 12 right-hand drive models; two with auto
transmission and 10 with manual. Furthermore, I own a right hand drive
DeLorean, which the paperwork tells me, is original. The vehicle is also
Eurofit configured. I have thoroughly checked my car for any tell-tale
hints that it may be a converted model, but there are none. A well-done
conversion perhaps?
Mr Knudson goes on to say that he had seen several DeLoreans that had been
converted, and were extremely well done, but most had been rather poor
jobs. I'm somewhat confused by this statement. Agreed that there are
probably a few sharks out there who have the attitude that 'near enough is
good enough' when carrying out vehicle conversions, however, I have seen
some converted DeLoreans in Australia which were all very professionally
done. One such DeLorean is owned by an American now living in Sydney who
recently had is 'D' converted here in Sydney.
Whilst not claiming to be a DeLorean guru, if the Australian to whom Mr
Knudson refers would care to contact me, I would be most happy to discuss
any aspects of the DeLorean which may be of interest to him. I would also
welcome any comments from the field regarding factory right-hand drive
DeLoreans.
Thank you,
Lance Haslewood

Hello Carson,

Another interesting note regarding values of rear cars.
Take the total cost of creating the Delorean spent by all concerned and divide it by the number of DeLoreans produced and shipped. Now you have the real cost to produce the $25,000 dollar DeLorean!

Dear Readers,
I became obsessed with the Delorean after one of the silver beauties
passed me and my family on the toll road in Florida. It must have been doing
at least 85 mph and my father said Delorean. I said, "What?" Father says,
"You know the Back to the Future car." I was shocked, I followed it with my
eyes all the way until he got off the expressway. I went out to learn more
and bought the Back to the Future movies to see the Delorean. I loved the
car before I knew what it is. Now I am 15 and I am a Delorean fanatic. I've
seen about a total of ten in my life. My hero is John Delorean, and someday
I to wish to own my own car company.
Thanks Folks,

If anyone is interested I saw an 83 (rarest year) on the Yahoo auction site.
It's been stored for the past 7 years but the guy only wants $6,500.
So if anyone is looking for a cheap Delorean this could be the one. Don't
get
me wrong I'm sure you'll have to drop another $5,000 depending on the
condition but I think it's still a good deal.

Well, that's a very good question Joe. At this stage, there's simply no
way to test the electrics. I plan to do so "on the Fly", as I get to
the point where I can even hook up a battery. Fortunately for me, the
previous owner left the electrical connections to the relay box intact.
It's the only thing besides the pedal box assembly that he didn't take
apart. (Yes, he even disassembled the alternator...)
Speaking of the pedal box, do the wiring connectors for the binnacle run
-completely- through the channel on the top of the pedal box, from the
firewall all the way through, or do they enter from the oval access hole
on the right side?
Just a side note for those who have been in the same boat, or pontoon, I
should say... Rivnuts are a pain in the wazoo. Only 3 of the access
panel bolts in the luggage compartment came free, the rest are either
stripped or frozen. I spent a lot of time with a Dremel tonight cutting
slots in the top of the bolts, and slowly working them loose with a
screwdriver and a pair of vice-grips. Having the body separated from
the frame, I really have no need to go through the access panels to get
to anything, but ya' always have to think of the future.
Another common question about my 12-step plan, was why I would want to
reattach the body to the frame so quickly. The answer is, I have a
one-car garage, and no room to store the pontoon body while I work on
the frame. I've managed to get enough clearance between the two to
attach the lines by placing 2x4 wedges between the body and the frame.
It's workable, but mighty tight.

Has any one or does anyone know of any one who has put nitrous on one
their D? This would seem to be the easiest and cheapest way to
substantially increase performance. On could easily pick up 50 HP.
Cost would be under $1,000. Refilling the bottle is fairly easy today
at hot rod shops. The bottle could fit right into the bonnet and be
almost invisible on the engine.

Obviously the BTTF movies sparked my first interest in the car. I did
not grow a love for the car until I started to research it on the
internet. Thanks to sites and organizations like this, I learned a ton
about the car. I have seen 3 D's in my life. I got to ride in one, and
another owner has offered to let me drive his if I can keep my grade
point average above 3.5. I am 16 and hope to own one in my teen years.

For everyone's information: I recently had a 45 minute conversation
with GEICO about insuring my D. About 6 months ago they said that
they would not insure it. After reading a post about someone else
getting insured by GEICO I decided to call them again and push harder.
It was a long conversation but GEICO apparently has an insurance
company that they use to insure collector cars and it is all handled
through GEICO. The question of what state I live in never came up
until the end of the conversation when I asked for an actual quote.
The answer for FL. was $200 per 6 mo. for PIP and bodily injury
insurance. They will insure the car for a stated value also but I
didn't get any numbers on that.

Hello List,
Finally got my car yesterday. I have owned it for a month but finally
got it shipped to my home. It is an black 81 with gas flap on hood. vin#2496
car has 28 k miles and runs. I got this car for CHEAP. A truck backed into
the right side and cracked out the windows and bent the quarter panel and
door. drivers side is great. for what I payed I am way more than happy.
Paint is starting to chip so I will be having it professionally striped next
summer. I would like to get a complete right door and a quarter panel with
window so I can drive it. If any one on the list knows of a parts car or has
those parts for sale please email me. I am in high school and cant afford
the new ones.
the starter is going bad. should I get it rebuilt or is there a
reproduction that would work better? Also, where is the battery supposed to
be? I saw one car with it in the trunk but myne is behind the passenger
seat.
Thanks
David,
vin#2496

Or better yet, twin turbos and a small nitrous system - the nitro reduces
"turbo lag" and acts like a natural intercooler. Just be conservative and
check everything twice . . .

Dan...........
Yeah, I know several people that got a normal "DeLorean" policy thourgh
State Farm. It must go by local offices because those folks are in here in
southern IL near St. Louis with me. It can be regional because all the
offices here report to the Bloomington, IL location.
When I first went to insure it they said the DeLorean was on the "Do NOT
Insure" list (along w/ Bricklin, Detomaso, and a few other cars I was
looking for at that time). I then talked to someone who was on the Classic
Car policy and called SF back. I had to coax them into letting me put the
DMC on it. I suppose they knew that if they didn't I was going to take the
6 other cars over to a new company so I wouldn't have to pay a second set of
premiums.
In the mean time I've talked to a few more D. owners that are on the Classic
Car policy and DON'T have a mileage limits. Looks like I just got the wrong
office to insure my DMC. Glad to hear you found the right on though! :))

I don't know about that, I have state farm and I had no problems insuring my
D as a regular car with full coverage. An my rates are pretty reasonable
too.
