Hi Lance - I'm guessing you're related to Rick who I've been in contact with before about your car. I have inserted replies below.

There are conflicting reports of this, but THERE ARE NO CARS ORIGINALLY PRODUCED WITH THE STEERING WHEEL ON THE RIGHT. All are conversions, but it's here that stories start to differ. Story 1) There are 12 right-hand drive cars converted on behalf of DMC by Wooler Hodec (sp?) in Andover. They did the relocation of the steering wheel and the pedal box.(the brakes are tricky), and the rebuilding of the dash. The Wipers and light clusters were done at the factory after this, IIRC. Story 2) THREE cars (one an auto) were converted AT THE FACTORY, the rest at Wooler Hodec. Interestingly, these are supposedly identified by the side indicators, and lack of running lights. As I say on my website, the stainless panels DO NOT have holes cut for the running lights and therefore they are NOT conversions, but original, which adds weight to this argument. However, Mike Loasby disputes this second story.
> I find this statement to be somewhat > contradictory to general opinion, and confusing, because as far as I am > aware, DMC manufactured 12 right-hand drive models; two with auto > transmission and 10 with manual.
These are indeed the correct statistics - all Black Manuals with two exceptions in each case - a grey manual which was converted for John Taylor, and a grey auto - the one supposedly done at the factory. BOTH auto's and two original RHD manual's are owned by Chris Parnham.
> Furthermore, I own a right hand drive > DeLorean, which the paperwork tells me, is original. The vehicle is also > Eurofit configured.
In my conversations with Rick, he told me the wipers aren't converted, and your rear running lights are red - check also the front indicators and the rear light cluster. These are all telltale signs of the prototypes. See my website for more details.
> I have thoroughly checked my car for any tell-tale > hints that it may be a converted model, but there are none. A well-done > conversion perhaps?
Definitely. Te reiterate from above: ALL RHD CARS ARE CONVERSIONS. The body-tub was never designed to take a RHD version. Check for the hole from the steering column on the left, for eg.
> > > Mr Knudson goes on to say that he had seen several DeLoreans that had been > converted, and were extremely well done, but most had been rather poor > jobs.
Hmmmm. the factory conversions were done VERY well, however, the cars themselves were used at the factory for testing and the Hooper's car has body damage due to experimentation with stainless repair.
> I'm somewhat confused by this statement. Agreed that there are > probably a few sharks out there who have the attitude that 'near enough is > good enough' when carrying out vehicle conversions, however, I have seen > some converted DeLoreans in Australia which were all very professionally > done.
If I had to convert one, I'd want it done in Oz - there are numerous companies who specialise in this because of your laws on LHD cars. Here in the UK it's not mandators, but the one car I've seen that's a post conversion cost 5000pounds excluding tax and ISN'T as well done as the factory ones, though it's pretty close!

I understand that the Delorean is an unusual vehicle and that others have had problems getting service, but I never knew it would be difficult to get an oil change. My local "Kwik Lube" absolutely refused to touch my car today, even for a state inspection. Why? "They're too expensive if something goes wrong." They were unimpressed when I told them that the DMC was actually cheaper than the other cars of mine that they've worked on, and equally unimpressed when I informed them that those other cars would not be returning.
Fortunately, I found a Texaco down the street that was more than happy to
work on it. They thought my being there was odd since they'd had another
Delorean in a few weeks ago (anyone here?) for service. I was a little
concerned at first ("Sure we'll work on a Delorean, it's just a
Chrysler...") but the service manager assured me that they knew what they
were doing. In fact, they knew about the female oil-drain plug and offered
to drill it and replace it with a standard one, but I opted not. Of course,
the tech doing the inspection looked in my trunk for the engine....

There was a poster company selling DeLorean posters for $2.50 each. It was the (supposedly) right hand drive car that many thought was simply a backwards printed shot of the car.
I tried the web site for them and it comes up "file not found". I wanted to get some of the posters for Christmas presents. Has anybody got any information on this company? The link is:
http://www.ohio.net/~pie1/posters/cars/cars.htm
At $2.50 per poster I was going to buy 10 or so but you had to do it over the phone. I didn't jot down the phone number but even if I had it I would be a bit hesitant to deal with them with no web site working......any info would be appreciated

Dear Members,
I just saw "Troy McClure" driving a DeLorean on the cartoon "The Simpsons." The Simpsons is on at 5:30 PM central time on the FOX channel (channel 29 on regular TV.) You see the front, side and the back. The only sad thing is (as if it was real life) that he was nailing everycar in the beginning. He hits the cop, Officer Clancy Wiggum, in the face with the door when he pulled him over for speeding, though. As of right now, I am going to find how to order the tape of the episode. The episode is when Troy McClure meets and dates Selma (I think) Bovier. If anyone knows where to order it, I would appreciate the information.
Thanks! John Feldman

Martin,
Excellent information on the RHDs. I'm very interested in this topic as I've found a 'very rough' RHD and am considering having it rebuilt. If you, Lance & Chris communicate off-list on this topic please cc. info to me as I find it very helpful.

I always thought that the DMC turning radius was insufficient, and chalked it it up to design quirkiness. But a discussion here recently sat in my brain long enough to kick in. Someone here complained of noise while making tight turns and was told that the tires were rubbing the front anti-roll bar. On my car, I these two parts miss each other by a couple of inches.
From the center position, I can turn the steering wheel 1.25 turns in either direction. Is this the same experience everyone else has? I'm starting to wonder, since this car's original owner was a bit of a tinkerer (no offense, Harold, wherever you are) and may have installed a "fix" for the tires rubbing. Clues, anyone?

The saga of Disassembled 5927 continues...
"Everybody wants to rule the world..." That was a great song this evening coming through the speakers of the Disassembled D. It's the first song, and the first time, that the D has made music since 1990. =) I got the wiring harness together enough to test the radio & windshield wipers, which are the only devices hooked up at present. Both are working flawlessly. The LCD display and tape eject are both perfect, too.
So far so good on the little things.
My rear glass was broken out by the previous owner's attempt to remove the torsion bars (yes, it really does happen... use extreme care!) Alll I had was a rim of adhesive and broken glass to remove, but that alone took almost 5 hours today. I used a hammer and sharp wood chisel to dislodge the adhesive, but it's a messy process. I would have liked to use the piano wire method to remove the glass, but the bottom edge has a sharp angle that would make it pretty difficult. Besides, I didn't have to worry about breaking the non-existent rear glass, and a utility knife just got gummed up while trying to saw through. Here's a good tip though I learned back when I worked at a body shop years ago: When you're trying to chisel out the adhesive, it helps to cover the remaining glass particles with a strip of Duct tape. Otherwise, while you're hammering, glass pieces fly -everywhere-. The tape holds them in place quite well, and makes cleanup a snap. A warning though: if you use this chisel method, watch the angle of your chisel carefully. Unlike 'normal' steel-bodied cars, it's quite easy to gouge the GRP in the process.
To be continued...

If you play the game resident evil 3 nemisis, you get to see a delorean parked outside an auto shop about thirty minutes into the game. Then later on, in fmv (full motion video) you see the car explode and crack in half. There's no real point to this except that I think its cool how they used the car in a new, best selling game. Also, if you look closly, you can see an american flag drapped over the cars hood. check it out... its cool.

... the PC video game featuring the DeLorean (and more than 30 other cars from the late 70s and early 80s) has been released and is now readily available in stores. The DeLorean is slower than you'd like, but agile and tough... just like in real life. :}
The game requires a 233 MHz or faster CPU and a reasonably modern 3-D accelerator card.

John,
I believe that episode is titled "A Fish Called Selma", if that helps at all in finding a VHS copy of it.
BTW, I heard that Johnny Carson was once pulled up in his DeLorean by the cops for driving while intoxicated. I wonder if the Troy McClure bit in The Simpsons was supposed to be a take on the Carson incident (even though Troy was pulled up because he wasn't wearing his glasses). Interesting...

Hi Kevin,
I live in Oakville and have had a 81 for 14 years. Where in Ontario are you?
Mike.

Yesterday I was working on trouble shooting some electrical problems. During the course of the day had let the battery run down, accidentally. So my father sugest that we might push start the car, but that was a miseable faliure. So then we tried to jump the car, and it'd turn over but there was no sounds of ignition. I've checked for spark at the coil and at the first plug, and I found it. The only thing it could be is fuel, and I don't know how to check for that.
I hadn't even opened up the engine compartment until I tried to jump it. I had worked in the relay box, but really only with #19 and #20 (the headlight relays).
Anyone have any clues what I might have done to my poor car, and how I might fix it?
