Since there is no "blue book" listing on the DeLorean the value of one
is based on the concept of willing seller and willing buyer. How much
the buyer wants a DeLorean, for whatever reason, will determine how much
he, or she, is willing to pay, obviously if the sellet has to sell then
he will want to make a sale in a hurry and will be willing to take a
lower price. I for one have an '83 that will stay in my fleet until it
sells for 30-35,000. I still do not understand why some D owners want
to depreciate the value of the car, don't they understand that there
will be no more and that the car is about as unique as they get ....
hang on and you will get your price.

Marv Sterling discussed DeLorean prices. In part he said:

Marv has a point, and it is very likely that the DeLorean is
destined for the juicy part of the automobile value chart.
However, this is not a slam dunk. The only guaranteed way
for me to get my money's worth out of my DeLorean is to
keep it in good shape and *drive* it. In 2.5 years of turning
heads and drawing crowds I feel like my DeLorean has
already paid for itself.

I think this is the most intelligent thing I have seen on the digest is weeks.
This is a fun car to dirve - it is a superb long distance rally car! Yes ,
it has idiosyncrasies, but then, don't we all! Drive it - enjoy the looks
- - the stares - the questions about how much money you must have to drive
such an expensive car.
Every physcologist should own one and rent it out to introverts - it will
change their personality overnight! I LOVE my car - I sometimes get very
frustrated with it, but then I do that with others (things and people) I
love too. At my age, I'm afraid I can't sit around waiting for the
anticipated increase in value that will make it a good investment. I
bought it to drive - and drive it and have fun I will. "81 DMC" and I have
traveled 80,000 miles together in nearly every state west of Chicago.

Oops, I guess you can see my hot button was pushed.

Au contraire! The quarterly publication, "Cars of Particular Interest" or
CPI, lists values for the DeLorean as well as many other "exotic" cars
not normally listed in your standard used car guides. Ask your insurance

Subject: Slow going

Howdy everyone,
My car has been running too well as of late so I am starting to get
nervous that something big is about to happen. The "calm before the
storm" syndrome. Anyway... There is one thing bugging me. When the
temperature drops below 80 degrees outside (which isn't very often
out here in Central Texas) the car won't accelerate. What happens is
that when the car is started and rolling I can floor the accelerator
and the engine will climb to 2000 rpm and then sit there. When I shift
to second the engine again will climb but when it hits 2000 the car
lurches a few times and after that it works perfectly. This sounds
like a fuel flow problem, but the fact it happens only when it is
cool outside is perplexing. Has anyone out there experienced similar
symptoms? Thanks in advance for any information.

Dear James and Subscribers to the Mailing List,

I apologize for my silence during the past months. I have been too busy to
participate in discussions on the list. But I have enjoyed reading the past
correspondences on the list in a batch whenever I have time to spare.

Now that James referred to my name, I would like to jot down a story on my
vehicle, which I have told to some subscribers of the list in the past.

Early in 1993 I purchased my DMC-12 (V.I.N.# SCEDT26T0BD003908, manufactured
in Sep-81, automatic transmission) as it was in Hereford (U.K.) when I was a
postgraduate student in Cambridge (U.K.)(back to school 8 years after
graduating from a university in Tokyo). The car was previously registered in
the name of a few U.K. owners. Its registration record says that the car had
been used in Ireland before it was registered in the U.K. late in the 80s.

Someone told me that the Belfast factory might have produced a couple of
right-hand drive cars for managing director of DMC and others but that the
rest of right-hand drive cars had been converted at shops in the U.K. and
elsewhere. I have no document to testify when my car was converted.

I shipped my car across the Atlantic and then across the Pacific to Japan via
Los Angeles where it went through extensive service work at DeLorean One.
Let me add, before I go on, that the shop did a superb job on my vehicle and
I have been driving my car happily ever after. For those who are not aware,
we drive on the British side of the road here in Tokyo, which General
MacArthur forgot to correct during Occupation after WW II.

Mr. Edward Bernstein told me that he had seen a few right-hand drive cars
before, including the one from Singapore on which he was working at that
time. I hear that the car went back to Singapore shortly before my car left
his factory.

I am a member of DeLorean Owners Club (D.O.C.) here in Japan which is not yet
a chapter of D.O.A. Members of D.O.C. all together own more than 30
vehicles. All but mine are left-hand drive cars. We estimate that about 50
DMC-12s are running about or lying idle in Japan and, again, we believe that
all but mine are left-hand drive cars.

The whole construction of the front dashboard of my car is rather rough,
especially underneath the dashboard. Also, Mr. Bernstein told me that
ventilation to the outlets on the doors is poor due to conversion-related
modifications, which he could not fix. He seems to know a lot more about
right-hand drive cars.

By the way, OGH 486Y (wearing a European - most likely U.K. - license plate,
manual transmission) featured in the articles "DeLorean: Living the Dream"
and "Steel Dreaming" in the book The De Lorean 1977-1993 is a right-hand
drive. The car is also featured in The World's Great Automobile Stylists (by
John Tipler, 1990, The Apple Press, London, ISBN 1-85076-256-2) which I
happen to have in my bookshelf. (OGH 486Y is found in page 96 together with
Esprit in a chapter on Giugiaro). If it is indeed a U.K. license plate, the
last letter ''Y'' suggests that the car was registered either late in 1982 or
early in 1983.

That's all for today. Have a nice weekend! Yoshi

It could also be an airflow problem. The fuel flow system is
more sensitive to *engine* temperature than air temperature.

The air intake system does adjust itself for temperature. Is
your intake stove working properly? That's the thing that
blows intake air over the exhaust to heat it up when the air is
cold. A big louver inside a chamber (passenger side of
engine compartment) decides whether to preheat intake air
before mixing it with fuel.

I thought it kicked in at a lower temperature than 80 degrees,
but I have never really checked. When I think of cold air, I
think of 0 degrees.

Subject: Radio Antenna Tape & KAPAC

With colder weather fast approaching I am finally trying to get serious
about finishing the restoration of my '81 DeLorean (VIN#1529). I had
planned on driving out to an event at KAPAC in Ohio this weekend to
purchase a new windshield and lugging it back home with much more TLC than
could be expected of a shipping company. Bad news is I came down with the
flu about two days ago and it is being very stubborn, so I decided it would
be best to stay home and rest.

However, the people at KAPAC were quite understanding and offered to sell
it to me later at the 30% discount I would have gotten this weekend. Jan is
a really nice person and I went ahead and checked out some other items
while on the phone with her. Their prices seemed quite reasonable, and
sometimes downright cheap - door glass window seals for $8 (priced them at
$75 apiece for a Porsche 924).
Needless to say I can't wait to go out there later and see the place myself.

As far as what to do about the radio antenna since my old windshield had
the antenna tape on it and the new one doesn't...that is easier than I
thought. After eating at a Chinese restaurant for lunch today, I decided to
stop in next door at Radio Shack and check into my options. Sitting on the
shelf in plain site by the shaft antennas was a couple of antenna tape
systems for the windshield at $4.99 apiece. The wire looks like a different
color than the one in my car, but I'm not going to bitch too much,
especially at only $5. Now I can maintain the clean lines of the car and
not have to worry about an antenna freezing up in winter or getting bent
somehow. :)

Personally, I have said before I thought my DeLorean was a steal at $9,000.
I have invested about $5,000 in it during the first year of ownership.
Since I drive it everyday I am always receiving offers for it, ranging from
$15,000 to $35,000. I probably will list the car later this month for
$27,500 and I don't expect to be willing to negotiate a whole lot.

Do other comparable DeLoreans sell for this price range. Not very often.
Does that mean they aren't worth around $30,000. NO, just that they are
undervalued by too many owners trying to unload "problem" DeLoreans that
can be easily restored by someone with patience and a few thousand dollars.
I believe this continually sabotages the market value of DeLoreans in more
pristine condition.

If mine does sell, I can buy another one like it and pay off my $17,000 in
debts. If it doesn't sell, though, I won't be upset. I'll still have an
awesome mode of transportation to amaze me everytime I look at it and
realize it is really mine!!

Hi,
I've experienced the same problem when I first start the car when
I leave home and work. After the first 1/2 mile, the engine kicks in and
everyting's fine. I've experienced the 'lurching' only about 4 times, and
I have no clue what it is. I hope that when I bring my car to Rob Grady he
can tell me what it is.

I'm in the process of buying a Delorean but people keep telling me that
I'll never be able to take it to a service place, or get parts for it.
There are no "DeLorean Mechanics" around. I live in the San Francisco Bay
Area, and I called around for DeLorean related information. The Volvo
dealers in the area, woudn't work on them, and I couldn't find a place that
did. Where do I get parts? If I did, would I be stuck for months waiting
for them to arrive. Would I have to pay ski-rocketing prices for them.
All of you owners, what do you do when you have a problem.

Chase,
No snips, what you said bears reperating. Bravo ! Sometime we can be our
own worst enemy. I had thought of trading my D, on a new regular car,
two years ago and was offered $20,000 . . . . it's insured for a fixed
value of $25,000 ... that should say something about the economic value
of the car ... the psychological value of owning somethin that only
about 6,000 other people have is something else.

As my obsession grows, my ideas become wilder and wilder! =o

I will soon be going off to college and $$$ has become a real prblem.
I have an idea that I want to bounce off all of you:

Would you be interested in high quality T-Shirts with the DeLorean pictured
on the back and the "DMC" logo on the front? Or, a "wireframe" design
with the stats of the car, engine, horse power, etc, on the back?

The pictures would be high DPI images on L - XL shirts.

I know of a few prospective buyers in my immediate area and assume that
many people at car shows may be interested as well.

Like I said, this is a idea and I would like to know how many people think
this is a worthwhile. Since I am of the WDOA, gathering high quality pictures
is another question. Are there any owners out there that would be interested
in seeing their DeLorean on a t-shirt or two? If so, email me.

There are already a bunch of DMC T-Shirts - but of course I am always a
sucker for another - my favorite shows the DeLorean in the doors up mode
and has the words - "It's not just a car - It's a Dream!"

Then, there is the shirt from each DeLorean Expo - and then for colder
weather, I have my airbrushed DeLorean Sweatshirt.

Ian, most of us have been there and done that - - but, good luck!

There are lots of DeLorean related articles of clothing
available. My favorites are the banlons from DMC Houston,
but DOA also has nice t-shirts and the DeLorean Parts
Depot at Kapac now has a nice new one, too. I like subtle,
sophistocated DeLorean stuff myself. I can never get
enough. If you build it they will come . . .

I sympathize! Before I bought mine people tried to frighten
me the same way! If it had not been for the DeLorean One
ad in Hemmings I probably would have abandoned my quest
for a DeLorean before I even started. But Hemmings is not
available in some areas, so unless you get DeLorean World
many of you probably think that DeLorean parts are as rare
as dinosaurs.

Fear not, DML readers! I am about to prove to all of the
doubters that parts are quite available!

(I hate to pre-empt James like this, but I happen to know that
he is on an airplane right now and so I am going to tell you
something he would have told you in a couple of hours)

BIG NEWS:
NOW YOU CAN BUY DELOREAN PARTS ONLINE!

As of Saturday morning the DeLorean Parts Depot at Kapac
has its own web page! To see for yourself, point your web
browser to:

www.deloreanparts.com

This should dispel all those nasty rumors that DeLorean
parts are hard-to-get. Falcon, you can get about 95% of all
the parts you could possibly want from this source. They will
all be brand-new factory original stuff, certain to fit!

They will be offering weekly specials, so drop by their web
page often!

Naturally DeLorean One, DMC Houston, PJ Grady, DeLorean
Motors, and the others are still available and ready to help in
an instant. Between them you can get all the parts and
advice you could possibly need. But for skeptics who are
on-line the DeLorean Parts Depot at Kapac web page is the
best way to instantly prove to yourself that DeLorean parts
are available today.
