Hello all!

This being my first posting I would like to say this list has been a = great help

to be able to contribute a few useful tips now and = then.

I am the new owner of a late '81. Unfortunately last night the = alternator belt
broke on my way home and I am in the need of a = replacement. I had a spare belt
that worked temporarily but is slightly = too big since the alternator is moved as
far back as it will move. What = are some suggestions for replacement belts for
both the A/C and = alternator?

Thanks in advance.

I am shure that this is some kind of mistake. I do *not* believe that James would
do something like this.

James, we all have gained and prospered from your list... the satements made are
from one man who is frustrated, not the list.

My Mmin interior headlight switch will not stay in the "on "position. It just popps
back out. This happened in the rain the other night. Is this common? How do I replace
it? Do I remove the radio or can the switch come straight out somehow?

I don't usually say anything on this list, but I must stand in defense of James
Espey in matters concerning his unselfish use of personal time for this enterprise..

Knowing James personally and living in the same area code, I have borrowed from/loaned
to James many things.. If something is not returned I'm sure that it is because he has
other things going on in his life...

To put such effort into a unsubstantiated pointless flame against the moderator seems a
bit overkill.. You must the type of person who writes the newspaper and broadcasts to
the world (or anyone unfortunate enough to listen) you petty grievances.

I'm sure after this you will receive your prized DMC manual back. I sure hope that you
continue to get your DMC mailing list E-MAILS...

In closing, air you dirty laundry in private. You are benefiting no-one with your
efforts in this direction..

DMC-News List Owner abducted by space aliens!

(no, no one will buy that....)

In the words of Richard Nixon, "I am not a crook!"

Yeah, that's better!

I didn't take the time to read all of Jory's posting, and was actually alerted to
it by another list member, obviously I'm not hiding anything because I let it go
through, but for all those who are anxiously awaiting the latest chapter in the DMC
Oners Manual saga, here goes!

I've been carrying this manual around for some time, and when I would think about
shipping it back, I never had it with me, and when I had it with me, it was always
on my "list" of things to do. As evidenced by my lack of recent postings, and the
sad state of the back issues, I've been a bit busy.

To make a long story short, and hopefully end this thread so we can get back to
discussing the REAL purpose of the list, technical discussion of the DeLorean,
DeLorean Motor Company and John Z. DeLorean, I dropped the Owners manual in a FEDEX
dropbox this afternoon. I also enclosed $3 to reimburse his shipping costs. Now he
is only out the use of one of his two manuals. For the record, here is the FEDEX
airbill number: 5167893555

Anyone can check at the status of this package at:

http://www.fedex.com

I apologize to Jory for the delay, and hope can get over his regret of doing something
nice for someone. Incidentally, I know of one or two other people out there that are
waiting for me to get things to them, and I thank them for their patience and
understanding. I also want to thank all the list members for the kind words and support
of the list, let's keep things moving in the right direction!

Hi,

I'm new to this list (subscribed at #188) and I was wondering if anyone of you knew out
of the approximately 6000 DeLoreans left, how many are manual and how many are automatic.
Right now I'm a senior in high school, and eventually (waaaaay down the road) I hope to
purchase a DeLorean with an automatic transmission.

Yet, 9 out of 10 times I see someone selling a DeLorean, it is a 5-speed....yecch :-)

Wait one minute... did I read that you would prefer a 3-speed automatic over
a standard 5-speed? Well, that's very different than what I dream of every
night in my DeLorean. I see a gray 5-speed with Infinity speakers and... well, that's
not the point now is it? =)

You say that there are approximately 6,000 DeLorean's left. How did you get that number?

I would use general adhesive/tar/wax remover to clean the area, then wash it with
soap and water and let dry thoroughly. I don't know about the rear windows for sure,
but professional black urethane is the standard glue for windshields and windows in
cars. I will have a fast-drying variant of this used next month to replace my
windshield and reattach my stationary door glass on the passenger side.

However, it is a rather overpriced RHD in England. I was wondering what an 82 model
with 2,300 miles is worth? It is a factory RHD.

It is thought that 30 right-hand drive DeLoreans were built and that only eight are
still in existence. However, I have heard of a case of at least one LHD one being
converted to RHD. If this one you are looking it is truly
one of the prototype RHD DeLoreans, it is definitely worth a much higher premium than
the other "garden-variety" DeLoreans (no offense meant ppl). Does the word "PRICELESS"
come to mind anyone?

Well, I am back from Ohio and KAPAC/DeLorean Depot. I had a wonderful conversation
with Jerry Rine, perhaps the most knowledgeable DeLorean expert still working on the
vintage line today (no offense Rob Grady) and a
man I consider to be the savior of the heritage, thanks in part to Sol Shenk and
Marvin Katz. I'll tell you people more about my trip in a later post.

But for now, I just wanted to let you know I will be more active in the list the next
few weeks (lots more time on my hands right now). I've only being researching DeLoreans
since deciding to purchase mine one year and nine days ago on a completely insane
impulse (as most of my friends call it). In future postings I suspect I will be spewing
forth much technical and historical information on the DMC-12. This is just a notice
in advance to say that I am sorry if any of the my information is incorrect or not
known if it is 100 percent factual. However, I am open to friendly email correcting
me in those instances or debating which competing "old stories" about some aspect of
the car's history is most likely true and which are more questionable.

So there you go. I may be setting myself up for lots of email, but oh well.

Most true sports car enthusiasts prefer manual transmissions to automatic transmissions.
Has a lot to do with better performance, power and the driver's ego to feel he/she has
greater control/mastery of the steel, rubber and plastic they are navigating down the
road. Naturally, I preferthe 5-speed DeLorean myself.

>You say that there are approximately 6,000 DeLorean's left. How did you get that number?

I may the source of this figure of "approx. 6,000" I've read and/or been told that
ABOUT 9,100 DeLoreans were manufactured and that about 6,000 remain. However, I am unable
to remember the source of the estimate of 6,000 or back it up with any facts. If two-thirds
of the cars exist after almost 15 years, though, it is a pretty good number. Of course,
that 6,000 would not include ones that were wrecked or otherwise sold to salvage yards. As
time goes on, more and more of those cars are restored by collectors.

Fresh off the showroom floor. Might be possible for that to happen in about
years, but don't hold your breath waiting.

help me

Joel:

One of the first things to check would be if the A/C circuit breaker has been
upgraded to a 40 amp breaker instead. You can get 40 amp circuit breakers at any
automotive store, although I am sure DeLorean 1 and others would gladly sell you
one at a higher twice, along with all new relays. Although, considering the vast
'numbers of old Lucas fuses still available through KAPAC/DeLorean Depot, it isn't
absolutely necessary to change them all out this very moment.

The A/C has a low-pressure cutoff switch (and also a high-pressure switch I
believe) that will shut the compressor off if freon levels are unacceptable. This
is done to prevent damage to the compressor and other components.

Also, if it is going off after 40 minutes, check to make sure your radiator
cooling fans are working. I don't know that their failure would cause the A/C to
quit, but then it is always good to make sure they work every now and then. About
the only time my fans come in is when stopped with the engine running at stop
lights or in line at drive-though windows.

As far as other electrical updates go, there is a starter circuit modification for
early '81 DeLoreans, a fan circuit modification that disables the "Fan Fail" warning
system, and a relay modification that keeps
the center console lights from coming on unless the parking lights are being used.
None are that complicated to perform. If you need more info on any of them, just say so.

FYI, the only Lucas component I have replaced in my May '81 DeLorean is the
Lucas flasher beneath the dash.

that worked temporarily but is slightly too big since the alternator is moved as
far back as it will move. What are some suggestions for replacement belts for both
the A/C and alternator?

Believe it or not ORIGINAL belts are still available. A couple of months ago I
obtained a kit from PJ Grady (1-516-589-6224) for about $43 that includes the
alternator belt, A/C belt, pair of A/C pulley bearings and the
cam cover o-ring. I haven't installed them yet, but will shortly. Yes, you can buy
aftermarket items cheaper, but I went with Rob Grady because he has been very helpful
to me in the past and is always willing to answer my questions, even if they don't
necessarily lead to an order. For those of you waiting months to get your DeLorean
back from his shop, I and others like me are to blame for the delay. :)

Of course, you also could call up KAPAC/DeLorean Depot (1-800-854-6087) and
order the same parts directly from them. ANY place that claims to sell NOS (new,
old stock) DeLorean parts is buying them from this place as they own ALL remaining
parts, except for the SS304 body tools and dies which reside deep beneath the water
off the shore of the U.K.

Something else to keep in mind, KAPAC/DeLorean Depot does not take credit cards and
only discounts from list price (what you and I pay) to companies that do a specific
amount of business with them (such as D1, PJ Grady, DeLorean Motor Company, etc.).
Shops that do a lesser volume, such as Foreign Car Specialists in Oregon, pay the
same price for parts from them as individual owners do. An exemption to the above
pricing rule would be the DOA chapter outing to the warehouse earlier this month
where a number of items were offered for huge discounts and all other items were 30
percent off list price.

to the latches in my car are adjustable and tend to rattle themselves loose enough
