I appreciate Lee taking the bull by the horns and getting the ball
rolling on the key blanks, but would ask that EVERYONE INTERESTED IN KEY
BLANKS, contact Lee directly at:

lseiler@radiance.com

Hopefully, that will keep the list from becoming bogged down with people
interested in keys. Also, I have asked Lee to keep us all posted via the
list with a "Status Report" once or twice a week - thanks!

The material is readily available from any auto upholstery shop. Failing
that, Ray Haug, a list member, wrote a very detailed and informative
posting on the replacement of the headliners, which I believe included
part numbers for the material. It's in the back issues, and I expect the

I see that Jameel Ahed has his upgraded alternator working but
not charging properly yet.

The Silver Fox asked for a more detailed explanation of the
wiring going to the upgraded alternator.

I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you.

On my 100 Amp alternator, the light brown/white wire is going to
Pin 2 on the alternator. Pin 1 is connected to a solid brown
wire coming out of the wiring harness also.

Can anyone explain what each of these wires do?

This subject has been covered in past posts to the list, so I will be
brief. Best bet is to take the panels to a local upholstery shop to get
the work done. They should have the same type of material in a variety
of colors and will also have the experience to glue it to the panels
with good results. I paid $75 to get both panels done this past spring.

Howdy Fellow DMLer's,

With the winter season rapidly approaching, I'm sure many of us who
dwell in the colder climates are getting ready to store their stainless
jewels for the winter.

On that note: I am going to attempt to store my DMC on jackstands
for the winter, but the question is; where is the best place to position
the stands to avoid unnecessary strain on the D. I was thinking of
placing them at the 'normal' jacking points, but to do this I'll need
to raise the car somehow, how dangerous is it to use a floor jack
on a D?
I also plan on using a fuel stabilizer, then draing the tank, and
the cooling system, putting a little oil through the air intake and
into the cylinders etc.
Does anyone have any other tips on storage?

Door lights that don't go off are what I think is the most common battery
drain.

It's been discussed on the list and should be accessible in the back
issues, it's not hard at all.

There will be an announcement in the VERY near future about the CD.

Several people started on it, and I left it there. I would still welcome
someone taking the time and initiative to create this based on the back
issues. Pretty much all the "common" problems have been beaten to death
on the list since its inception in 1995.

I use a floor jack, actually two, with one on each side at the normal
jacking spots. I raise the rear first and then position two jack stands,
of
suitable strength, under the beefiest part of the rear cross member, under
the engine. I put a thin board between the frame and the top of the
stands.
After lowering the car onto these I proceed to the front where I place the
stands under the brackets clamping the front swaybar to the frame. Putting
plastic under the the car prevents moisture from the concrete floor
getting
to the various chassis parts. Every other year I change the coolant and
flush the brake fluid. I've never done anything else except to top off the
fuel tank, add a bit of Stabil to it, and remove the battery. In 16 years
I've never had a problem. The car fires right up every spring. I store it
in
an unheated garage and because it shares that garage with everyday
drivers,
I feel the unheated aspect is best. Here, in Minnesota, once we go into
the
deep freeze we usually stay there until spring. As long as the car stays
put
it's preserved much like the pizza in your freezer.

Dan,

Once your car is running, does it run ok? Hard starting when cold could
be a
bad thermo-time switch, which is located on the drivers side of the water
pump. It's what tells the cold start valve to fire when the engine is
cold.
This is the fuel injections answer to a choke found on a carbureated car.
When the engine is cold find the plug going to the thermo-time switch and
unplug it. Put a jumper wire into the female socket of the blue wire going
into the plug and, while someone tries starting the engine, touch the wire
to ground. If the engine fires up, replace the thermo-time switch. It's a
common Bosch part. Most auto shops carrying foreign car parts have it. Ask
for one that fits a 1981 Saab 900 Turbo. It's the same switch. Or save
some
leg work and buy it from one of the DeLorean shops. Many times their
prices
are close to the same as you'd pay elsewhere.

If a DeLorean takes about 10 times to turn over first thing in the
morning,
but then runs fine (although somewhat rough sounding), and restarts fine
if
the car doesn't sit for more then an hour, is that a sign of a messed up
fuel system? Do you think it will be OK if I just flush the fuel out,
replace the fuel filter and put in new gas? I'm scared to death to drive
it anymore then I have.

Also, does anyone know of any places in Austin that work on DeLoreans? I
called a volvo dealer (on 290) and they said they would, but I was
wondering if any other Texas owners have had theirs worked on in the
Austin
area.

extras include Black car mats

car has been appraised at $26,500
asking $25,000 (well worth it for a 2nd place finisher at the East Coast

this is an immaculate car that has never failed me as a daily driver (the

Subject: DML: RHD

Greetings to all. I apologize for my absence from the mailing list
for the past months.

Mr. Lamrock, thank you very much for having told us the story on
RHD vehicles, which is most informative.

> Norman Walters, the foreman at Wooler-Hodec (which went out of business some
> years ago), subsequently did a number of conversions for Top Gun (a company

> stirling). Norman had a supply of all the necessary parts eg. dash, steering
> gear, wing mirrors, wiper motors, plus the knowledge of what's required.

In March 1993, when I was a postgraduate student in Cambridge,
I purchased mine (RHD conversion, black interior, automatic, VIN 3908,
manufactured in September 1981) from Mr. Andrew Hobbs in Hereford,
which was his own DMC-12. According to registration record, he was
the third owner of the car in the U.K. - he never registered it in his
name
though ? and the car was originally driven in Ireland before it came to
England. At that time Mr. Hobbs also sold to someone else his company,
which I did not purchase as I was non-UK resident.

> One of our list members from Japan, Yoshi Hamaie, owns a converted RHD
> car, and at one time Ed B. did work on it, but Ed did not convert it.

Hello, Jim. As I wrote elsewhere, I shipped my vehicle to DeLorean One
in Los Angeles when I returned to Japan, as I could not find a DeLorean
expert shop in Cambridgeshire or nearby London where I worked towards
the end of my stay in England.

> Whether or not Ed has done a conversion for a Japanese customer I do not
know.

Ed told me, while his engineers were engaged in an excellent semi-
restoration project on my vehicle, that he had once worked on another
RHD car for someone in Singapore, . I do not think that he has ever done
RHD conversion for his customers.

> Once a car reaches a certain age, it no longer must be converted to
> RHD for importation into Japan, I believe it is ten years.

Vintage is not a problem. The Ministry of Transportation here in Japan
keeps a close eye on after-market modifications done by shops and users.
So, it would be easy for someone, who very badly wants to drive a RHD
version of a classic, to convert a LHD vehicle outside Japan and import
it.
If he or she is willing to file a batch of application forms and to face
examination by agency officials (affiliated to the ministry), he or she
may
choose to convert it in Japan.

Cheers. Yoshi

I would like a set of headlite covers as shown on the Sping 87
DeLorean World cover, of Harry Wards "Dream Machine".
Can anyone tell me where to get these or any other like them?

Harry also has the DMC logo removed and I am wondering
what would be the best way to cover the holes left (if any).

His covers have a small DMC logo on each lower outer corner.

I have seen photos in older ads where the cover appears to
be distorted, but it might be just reflections making it look that
way. I would not want anything like that.

Also one OLD ad showed a choice of dark, lite, or clear. I
would think the dark would be more desirable.

Also are there blackout covers for the Turn Lights available?

Does anyone know if Harry Ward has an Email address?

Yes it does. However, if I let the car sit for longer then an hour or
two,
it takes awhile to start again. It turns over a bit each time and coughs
like it wants to start, but won't completely start until about the 7th or
8th turn. I'll then let the idle fall back down and the car sounds fine
then. Once it does start, when I initially accelerate, the engine has
paused twice in a row going from 0-20mph a couple of times. They are
slight, but distinct half second pauses. From that point on, the car
works
like a champ. Also, when I finally do get the car started for the first
time of the day, it initially (for about 1 mile) drives a little bit
rough.
I can still get out into traffic, but I can definitely feel the car not
having a lot of fun. Does any of this sound like a fuel problem? I'm
going to be home in Austin for two days this weekend and I was going to
drain the tank completely and put in a new fuel filter. Do you think this
will help?

One other thing, I just put a new battery in, but when I initially start
the car (in key position II), it shows around 8volts. Once the car is
running and the alternator is alive, the meter reads 12-13 volts. Are my
gauges just ornery, or do you think my battery is being drained. I've
never known for a dying battery to give the signs that I'm having though.

My main question is, is this car OK to drive? Do you think I'm doing more
damage to it by driving it like this? I'm only home in Austin a few days
a
month and want to drive my new baby around, but don't want to do further
damage.

Subject: DML: Delco Alternator

I'm amazed that Jameel could not find a wiring diagram for a Delco
alternator in the vast library system of the University of Illinois. I
don't remember if he had the two terminal plug or the four terminal
plug, but this is what I found in an old Haynes manual in the garage.

Two terminal plug: Spade connectors work well on these.
Pin 1. Connect the brown and yellow wire from the idiot light.
Pin 2. Connect a short jumper to the Batt. (alternator output) terminal.
Batt. (alternator output). Connect the three? big brown wires that were
connected to the output terminal of the previous alternator.

Four terminal plug: This is the newer Delco alternator with internal
regulator. It would probably be advisable to get a plug with pigtails
and splice the wires.
Terminal L: Connect the brown and yellow wire from the idiot light.
Terminal S: Connect a short jumper to the Batt. (alternator output)
terminal.
Terminal F: Not used
Terminal P: Not used
Batt. (alternator output). Connect the three? big brown wires that were
connected to the output terminal of the previous alternator.

hand.

>DeLorean World cover, of Harry Wards "Dream Machine".
>Can anyone tell me where to get these or any other like them?

In the last issue of DW, Teri Jennings has a classified ad for her
catalog which features, among other things, headlight covers.

Subject: DML: Trunk/Hood seals and Window Regulator(motor)

Does anyone have a cross reference part identification for the trunk/hood
rubber seal and or a cross reference for the window regulator (motor). I
know that these parts must have been used for other autos. The window
regulator that I installed about a year ago I got from DMC Houston and it
was a good substitute but it was very expensive. Also I am sure the
trunk/hood seal was used in other cars. The cross reference list that I
have does not list these parts. Any help would be of great assistance.
Thanks, Jim.

John and all,

Nu-Life Color Spray (TM) #614 Grey is available through Oregon
Leather @ 503-228-4105.

I just called to check that it's still made and they told me they
have it. The can I have is 4.5ozs. Maybe it comes in other sizes.

Subject: DML: Automotive Hall of Fame

As I mentioned a few days ago, the Automotive Hall of Fame just opened
this week in Dearborn, Michigan. You can now view a list of the
inductees at:

http://www.automuseum.com/HallFame.html

As speculated, John Z. DeLorean is conspicuously absent. In addition,
the headline story from cnn.com at:

http://www.cnn.com/US/9710/06/auto.hall.of.fame/

credits Carrol Shelby as the inventor of the Muscle Car in the 1960s.
Interesting. I don't dispute that Shelby is entitled to that claim, I am
simply
pointing out for DOD readers how history is being recorded.

Reading the inductee list, there are a bunch of inductees with a lot less
fame than John Z DeLorean!
