That might be tough. I was rear-ended twice last year and my D was

Remember that cartalk.com car ownership satisfaction survey I
mentioned a few months back?
Well, the statistical survey results are still not ready, but the comments
are currently available by car / year. It looks like so far they have
gotten
32 of us to fill out the survey for DeLoreans, perhaps this is even
enought to publish the results. I would really like to see a valid
comparison of owner satisfaction and reliability for DeLoreans compared
to other cars.
Anyone who wants to get into what they call "the greatest car
ownership database ever compiled" can still take the survey. As I recall
it takes 20 minutes or so. It is on the web at:
http://cartalk.msn.com/Info/newsurvey.html
If you want to read the comments they have accumulated so far, they
are curently available at:
http://cartalk.msn.com/Survey/Results/
So far it looks like we DeLorean owners love our cars. Note that a few
people have mistakenly claimed that they own 1992 and 1993
DeLoreans. I expect they will throw out this data when they do the
analysis.
Some cars, like the Camry, have HUNDREDS or entries, so the sample of
32 DeLoreans may be too small to count. When the statistical analysis is
published I will mention it on the DML.

My suggestions (and keep in mind that I am not a professional auto
mechanic or a DMC owner) would be to check the fuel filter, sock filter
inside the fuel tank, and most importantly the electrical connections to
the fuel pump. I'd appreciate being informed as to the resolution to this
problem as I seem to be having a very similar problem with my similar to,
but non-DMC automobile.
What I've done so far on that car has been to replace the sock filter in
the fuel tank (which needed it, but didn't affect the problem). I didn't
replace the fuel filter because it had already been changed a couple
months prior to this due to routine service. But the thing which
alleviated the problem for a couple weeks was to minimally clean the
electrical connections to the fuel pump. My problem, however, has
returned, but I haven't had a chance to get under the car (where the fuel
pump is located) and thouroughly clean the connections.
> injector cleaner, but that didn't solve the problem. If you have any =
Tried that too, didn't think it was the problem, but it's not a bad idea
to use that stuff occasionally anyhow. It would also be a good idea to
check the fuel pressure if you have access to gauges for doing that. (I
don't, unfortunatly) There's also the chance that your fuel pump is going
bad, or that the problem is not related to the fuel system at all. As I
said before, I'm not a professional mechanic and therefore lack experience
with a wide variety of problems.
Hope this helps,

Subject: DML: The DCO at the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival
Last Saturday the DeLorean Club of Ohio took our cars to the Ashtabula
Covered Bridge festival in rural northeast Ohio. This was arranged by
Jill
and Wayne Luoma, who did an excellent job.
A few days before the festival the local newspaper had a story about
the parade to get people interested in coming. The only participants they
mentioned were the 13 DeLoreans they were expecting. The article
made it seem like our DeLoreans WERE the parade!
The day of the event we actually had 14 DeLoreans show up. Everyone
was very impressed (including me!) by the enthusiastic turnout. We
drove the parade route with our doors up to lots of cheering kids and
adults.
This was my first parade in my DeLorean, and I must say I was
surprised by the number of grown men who broke away from the crowd
and ran alongside our cars to ask questions. A man would be jogging
alongside my car asking: "Is this really stainless steel?" while another
was huffing and puffing beside the car ahead of me asking: "How much
does one of these babies sell for?"
The parade ended at the Ashtabula county fairgrounds, where the other
festival events were taking place. They had a huge area in the center of
the grounds set aside for our cars, and we parked our fleet of silver
beauties in formation. We took a bunch pictures, but in most of them all
you will see is people's butts as they crowd around the DeLoreans.
Most sibscribers the DML probably have a picture like this in their album:
the backsides of 30 people crowded around their car, gawking. The
caption should read: "Can you find the DeLorean in this picture?"
After a few hours of answering questions, browsing crafts, and
drinking lemonade, we took a covered bridge tour. The festival had its
own tour route, which was all on dirt roads. Wayne Luoma realized
ahead of time that we wouldn't want to take our nice, clean DeLoreans
on that route and layed out a greaat alternative which was all paved.
We spent the next two hours viewing the beautiful fall colors and some
rusitc old covered bridges. I enjoyed driving my DeLorean through some
of these bridges, one of which has no modern updates.
After the tour we went to Ferranti's winery for dinner and wine. While
we enjoyed a great meal I passed around a few hard copies of the DMC
News 'Zine, since some of our members had not seen it back in August.
We discussed future activities, including the upcoming events in
Columbus and Cincinnati, next year's DOA Expo in L.A., and our annual
meeting in January.
Everyone had a great time, and clamored for more DeLorean activities.
Based on the participation we had at this event, I expect you will see a
strong DCO representation at next year's L.A. Expo.
Does anyone know the deadline for the next DeLorean World off the top
of their head? Wayne Luoma is writing an article about our tour, and we
would like to see it make the next issue. Please contact me if you know.

Subject: DML: '81 DMC for sale
There is a DMC for sale in the Wilmington/Newark, DE area, if anyone is
interested- one of my friends saw it and told me about it, and I went to
check it out today. It can be seen on Kirkwood Highway (Rt. 2) where it
hits Rt. 7 (in front of the Howard Johnson's).
It is an '81 (with fuel filler inside trunk)- build date Sept. 81, 5spd,
black leather, with 17,000 miles on the odometer (probably not accurate,
as
it had a new speedometer). I believe the VIN was 03756.
From the outside, apart from being VERY dirty, it looked like it was in
pretty good shape- no rust, dings, scratches, except for a yellow streak
of
paint along the right front wheel well.
The guy just had all the door/hood/engine cover struts replaced with PJ
Grady struts, relatively new Yokohama tires, a new speedometer cable,
updated/repaired fan relay, new fuel gauge unit, and a new clutch.
On the inside: the leather was in a little better than average shape, it
had a new speedo (to 160), original radio (some of the LEDs did not work
and the speakers were sundried and in pretty bad shape), DMC floor mats,
just about all the paperwork, including the owners manual in excellent
shape. As far as I could tell all of the climate control functions
worked.
The biggest problem I found was that it stalled constantly. I would start
it up, release the gas, and it would sputter and die. I tried it with and
without the clutch down, revving it, cranking it for a bit longer, but I
guess the engine is just out of tune. I could only keep it running with
my
foot ever so slightly pressed on the gas.
As if on cue (with both doors, hood, and engine cover open), as soon as I
tried starting it for the first time (which, by the way, was a pretty big
thrill for a 17 year old), a man walked up to the car and said, "How many
engines ya got on that thing?" I said, "Excuse me?" He responds, "Ya got
an extra one in your trunk!" How nice of him to point that out. :)
Well, I've babbled long enough- the guy wants $18k for it, but I doubt he
is in serious need of the money as he just bought a new Acura NSX. If you
stop to see the car, he works in the Fastsigns store in the adjoining
shopping center, or his work number is 302-998-6755 (I don't know his
name). I hope this car finds a good home...I would provide it, if I could
bargain him down about $16k. :)

All the hood seals curved around the flap, even if there was no flap. DMC
only changed the stainless part of the hood, not the supporting frame
underneath.
Also, I ordered one of these seals from KAPAC (back when it was still
KAPAC) and it came all rolled up with the original "stickum" on the
underside. They were not formed to shape that they are on the hood. I
would imagine that the same or similat style weatherstripping is/was used
on other cars. A local auto supply store has an aisle full of different
design weatherstripping in rolls - maybe there is one in your town.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in a conversation I had with Dave

between '81 and '82 (on the doors, at least) was that the seals were
pre-sized for fitting after '82, but in '81 were just cut to size from one
long strip. Maybe it was the same for the Hood/Trunk (Bonnet/Boot to the

Subject: DML: *IMPORTANT* safety info about windshield replacement
I remembered reading a while back on the DML about someone with an OEM DMC
windshield getting it put in by a local glass shop. So I thought that
this piece of info may be of interest to that person and anybody else who
has to have the windshield of ther DMC replaced in the US in the future.
While at a local glass shop (on non-DMC related buisness), I found out
that it is appearently now against federal law to install windshields
using only butyl so that they may be kicked out. The DOT now beleives
that the windshield should stay in during accidents to keep occupants from
flying out. Well this is all fine and good for most cars, but if (heaven
forbid) one should roll their DMC and it had a windshield installed in
this manner, they would be trapped.
Most shops now don't even use butyl because it is so messy. (Butyl is
that black goo that seals the windshield to the car) My solution to this
problem, if I were in such a situation, would be to find a shop which does
still use butyl and would 'accidentally forget' to reenforce the butyl
seal with the additional compounds now required by federal law.

The original DeLorean Motor Company no longer produces automobiles, and
hasn't since late 1982.
The factory still exists in Northern Ireland and an event there this past
summer allowed peopel to tour the facility. Note that there is very
little visually to show that DeLorean automobiles were ever produced
there.
At the time the factory was closed, a company in Ohio bought the
remaining parts and warehoused them, selling the parts to companies and
indivduals. Earlier this year, Stepehn Wynne and DeLorean Motor Company
(no relation to the original DMC) bought these parts. They are having a
tour/parts sale/DMC-fest at the warehouse 10/31-11/2.

Bill was correct. I complained to their webmaster, and now the

The DeLorean windshield isn't installed with butyl. It's glued in with
polyurethane like all new cars are today. One of the reasons for this is
many of today's cars use the bonded in place windshield to increase the
structural integrity of the body. I'd suspect the door glass wouldn't be
too
difficult to kick out in an emergency. It's safety glass and crumbles into
thousands of pieces.
