I bought my DeLorean new and with-in a couple of days of ownership the
passenger window dropped out of its track. The dealer repaired it and two
days latter the same thing happened. The dealer was across town and I
decided I'd fix it rather than drive that distance again. I popped the
glass
carrier back on the front guide as that was the one that the carrier kept
jumping off. I also bent the guide a bit away from the window so the
carrier
'fingers' had a bit more tension while gripping the guide. It's still
working fine after 16 years. The window motors have no limit switches and
if
you keep your hand on the switch after the window reaches the end of it's
travel the motor keeps running and something finally gives, either the
track
tube or the elbow between the tube and the motor. If you just watch the
window and stop the motor at the end of the windows travel you won't have
problems.

One of my winter projects is to be a partial dismantling of my front end
to fix (replace) the radiator, straighten up one of the crush tubes and
de-rust and re-paint part of the frame. I'll also install the stabilizer
recall kit that this car never had (hence the bent crush tube!).
Does anyone have any experience with attempting to match the color of the
epoxy finish? I am not planning to re-epoxy it, but use some other
restorative paint that only comes in other colors. This car is not driven
in the rain much , (never intentionally, it hasn't been wet in at least 5
years), and I store it for the winter.

The first ten laws for buying a "D", you get what you pay for x 10!
Buy it
for
a parts car, maybe. But it sounds very trashed, so even that may be
false
economics. Take your time, find a complete car that's running and has
all
the pieces in place. Rub another10K against the 3K, be prepared to spend
some more. Get your finger nails greasy, and welcome to the 'Club'.

I picked up a flashlight key while I was in KAPAC last year. There were a
few precut keys left (20-50) and one happened to match my car's key ID.
:) I also have the button and electronics and have got the key to work
sometimes, however, I don't recall seeing any spare parts for the other
remainign keys in the box. :( Sorry guys.
I'll try to remember to bring the key to Ohio in case anyone wants to see
it. Also, I will have a set of uninstalled SS brake lines, in case anyone
wants to see what they look like. No, I am not selling them. Just finally
picking them up from Marty who also will be there.

I remember reading in Stainless Steel Illusion that the possibility of
plastic body panels could have been a future option. The idea was new at
the time, and would allow the DeLorean to be painted. Today this is
practical. My local Saturn dealer explained that their plastic door
panels are dent resistant, and low cost. It is cheaper to buy a new
plastic panel, then to pound out & repaint a metallic panel. For those
who might enjoy seeing their D, this would be an option. I however like
the stainless, because it's different, and makes the car more
recognizable.
I don't know much about engines, but I found this interesting. Chrysler
has 3 new engines for their sedans this year. One is a 2.7 liter V-6 DOHC
that gives 200hp. Another is a 3.2 liter V-6 SOHC that gives 220hp. That
seems odd when a Ford Mustang 4.6 liter V-8 SOHC gives 225hp. Anyways, I
think that a similar V-6 would be sufficient, with the option of a turbo.

The faceplates are different on the Craig and ASI radios. All 81's came
with the Craig radio (identifiable by the tuner display in the tpae deck
lid) and most all of the 82's and 83's came with the ASI (identifiable by
the clock in the radio, separate from the tape deck lid). I also needed a
faceplate, and was unabel tof find one for the ASI radio like I needed. I
got a faceplate/knobs from DeLorean One for a Craig radio and it it
suitable, though the marking do not accurately represent the functions of
the knobs. The Craig faceplates/knobs are readily available from any of
the DMC parts/service facility, about $15.

Sounds like a real project!
You did not answer some common questions anyone whould have on this
project.
How much did it cost you?
What are the new specifications on the car? HP, Torque, 0-60 times, top
speed, and so on.
I also disagree on your Turbo opinions. I have the Twin Turbo setup in
my DMC and am quite happy with it. I have had similar experiences as
Rad Dad, that is no problems with overheating or engine wear. I do
however admit that I am not happy with the sound the engine makes with
the modified exhaust, Not much room for a decent sized muffler.
What I really dont understand is why you felt you had to keep the car
British. JZD may have needed to use British parts for political
reasons, but if you are making a dream machine why not use what YOU
think is best, no matter the source. My Dream DMC would include the
engine in your example, the 3.8 Turbocharged Buick as used in the Grand
National. Over 300HP from a 6 Cylinder. I am making the assumption
that there would be more room to work in there with a 6 Cylinder than a
big 8 Cylinder, but I am not fimiliar with the engine you have
selected. The 6 cylinder would also use less gas with standard use,
but still have the power we all crave. As far as Transaxle, I would
ONLY go with another manual gearbox. I have no idea what I would use.
A conversation I had with Rob Grady 4 or so years ago, I asked him about
this modification. He had said that someone had done it, and used a
modified Mazda RX7 Trans with a Buick 3.8 Turbo motor. The project was
Big Bux, more than I have to spend.
Either way, enjoy you car!! It sounds like I would!
If you have the ability, please post pictures of your car with some
specifications. If you dont have server access, I am sure someone here
could help you out.

Subject: DML: Oil Light
About a week ago I wrote about my annoying acceleration problem (the one =
where the car lagged when I stomped on the pedal). Knut Grimsrud =
suggested that it is my fuel pump relay (and that sounds right since I =
get the buzzing noise from the relay compartment).
Today another problem erupted: about 40% of the time when I stomp on =
the clutch, my oil light blinks on for an instant after the RPM gague =
hits the bottom, then the engine revs up and everything is alright. I =
have only encountered this twice before and one time it killed the =
engine! =20
Now the light happens a lot, but the engine has not stopped (yet). =
Normally, the engine revs up after the gague goes down but the oil light =
does not come on. I am assuming that this oil light is BAD. Also, I =
have noticed that the higher I run the RPMs then use the clutch, the =
more likely I am to get the light. Today I probably got it ten times in =
some city driving.
Is this problem related to my accel. problem? Can anyone make since of =
this oil light? Thanks so much for your help concerning all of my lousy =
experiences with my De Lorean.

Subject: DML: Re: 3K DMC in Las Vegas (Was DMC Question)
DMC question was kinda bland subject, ya know!
Anyway, Unless the car is a real basket case, it may be worth a 3K
purchase as a parts car.
If it is being sold for 3K I am going to assume that it may have damage
that makes it impossible to correctly restore.
As far as if YOU should buy it or not, well... That all depends on what
you want. I don't think you will get away cheap with this car, and it
does not sound like you can just drive it home.
If it has been sitting for years we can assume it needs either major
frame repair, or replacement. Is the engine OK? Drive train?
Suspension? Body panels?? Most important, HOW IS THE LEFT FRONT FENDER,
THIS ALONE MAY BE WORTH 3K! If so, you can buy yourself a new frame,
and rebuild the car on the new frame. If the stainless is in bad shape
you can paint the car (Do you want a painted Delorean?) This is by no
means cheap, and you may be financially better off buying a car in
better condition. Again, all depends on what you want.
If you decide NOT to buy this car, post the information on the car for
the rest of the group. One of our friends in Southern California may
want a good parts car.
Good Luck,

First, offer him about 2,000 - 2,500. If he accepts, buy the thing.
Drag it home, put it in a garage and start taking it apart. If it has a
screw in it, remove it ! Then, start with the frame and work your way
back up. Replace everything thats worn, torn, or just rusted away.
Then, when you are all done, even if you put 6,000 or 7,000 back into it,
you will still have spent less than 10,000 and have a car that is better
than it was new. If this seems like alot of work and you don't think you
can do it, then you probably shouldn't get the car. On the other hand,
if you get into it and find its more than you can handle, then sell the
parts to get your money back. And last but not least, If you don't
want the car, I may be interested ! SO, e-mail me back at
bsmoody(AT)kih.net if you don't purchase it !

When I saw the original posting that Dick responded to here I wanted to
respond but didn't have time at the moment. When I had the time I had to
get
back to it and say something. In 1961,( yes I realize this dates me as an
'old guy') I was at the Indy 500 race at which Jack Brabham was entered
driving a Cooper Climax rear engined car. This was the first rear engined
car to run at Indy in decades. Not only was a rear engine car thought of
as
a folly by the 'big torqy' Novi and Offenhauser guys, but the four cyl.
Climax engine was half the size of the aforementioned engines. Jack
finished
7th and set the stage for Jimmy Clark to eventually win at Indy in a rear
engined car. The Cooper handled so superior to the front engined roadsters
that had dominated Indy for ions that anyone with an ounce of engineering
savvy could see that the road to the winners circle now took a new turn. A
Delorean, with a well done turbo, in the hands of a driver that knows how
to
take advantage of the boost, can run right with the torqy V-8's on the
race
track. I don't claim to be the most masterful person behind the wheel, but
I've had enough years experience with the turbo in the DeLorean to be able
to give a several foot lbs. torque advantage to cars with-in 20 horsepower
of the turbo DeLorean, and still give them a damn good race. During the
Wisconsin Sports car Rally at Road America two years ago I had no trouble
eating up standard engine Corvettes from the same vintage as my DeLorean.
From stop light to stop light they probably would beat me but that isn't
what sports cars are all about. Just remember that the Formula One
Renaults
during the early eighties had engines based on the same block as the
DeLorean, much the same as the Formula One Ford engines had a cousin
residing in the Mustang. The only short coming the DeLorean suffers is the
lack of a proper gestation period. The major bugs have been well
documented
and dealt with over the years and I think, had the marquee survived a few
more years, it would have been an even more remarkable car.
