In my opinion, taken from being a DMC owner for just over two years, is
that most any DeLorean between $9,000 andd $13,500 is a project car.
Anything less than that is either a rare fire sale or a parts car and
nothing more. I will repeat what I have often said here and to others.
Any DeLorean will cost at least $15,000 to make readily driveable!! No
matter how much you buy it for, expect to spend no less than $15,000 on
it before you are done restoring/modifying it. I speak from experience.
But not a bad experience as I has assumed it was the case when I bought
the car.

Though it's getting late to be just now deciding to go, here's a reminder
of what you'll be missing if you don't join us this weekend in Columbus.

Incidentally, the hotel still had rooms available as of last week.

Moderator, DeLorean Mailing List

- --------------------------------------------------------
This is to invite you to an exciting event in the DeLorean continuing
saga.

DeLorean Motor Company and Stephen Wynne are pleased to announce the
acquisition of the largest inventory of DeLorean parts in the world.
After successful negotiations with Kapac/DeLorean in Columbus,
DMC/Houston now owns and controls a 46,000 square foot warehouse filled
with DeLorean spare parts. This is great news for DeLorean owners. They
may now be assured of parts availability for years to come.

The gathering in Columbus will give the participants an opportunity to
tour the DMC warehouse in Columbus, Ohio to see this massive inventory of
DeLorean parts.

DMC is also pleased to have acquired the services of Leif Montin, who
will assist in the control, organization and distribution of the parts
inventory. Leif was the National Parts Manager for the original DeLorean
Motor Company in Irvine, California. Leif will be available during this
event to give some inside background of the DeLorean "start-up" and to
answer questions about the early days of the first DMC.

Rob Grady, of P.J. Grady, Long Island, will present a tech seminar. A
partially assembled DeLorean will be used for the presentation.

The event schedule will be as follows:

Friday, October 31, 7:30pm to whenever - Informal get-together at
DeLorean Hospitality suite at the Crown Plaza, downtown Columbus.

Saturday, November 1, 8:00am to 8:30am - Complimentary coffee at the DMC,
Columbus warehouse.

Saturday, November 1, 8:30am to noon - First group will tour the Parts
Warehouse while the first group attends the Tech Seminar.

Saturday, November 1, noon to 1:30pm - Lunch break.

Saturday, November 1, 1:30pm to 5:00pm - Second group tours the warehouse
and the first group attends the Tech seminar.

Saturday, November 1, 6:00 and 6:30pm - Informal, no-host group dinner
and Barcelona restaurant (One of Columbus most fashionable). Due to
limited space, there will be two seatings and availability is on a
first-come, first serve basis).

Sunday, November 2, 10:00am - A second tour of the Parts Warehouse for
those interested.

A special room rate of $89.00 per night has been negotiated at Crown
Plaza hotel for attendees. Reservations should be made no later than
October 8th, 1997 by contacting the Crown Plaza at the following
address/phone: Crown Plaza Hotel, 33 Nationwide Boulevard, Columbus, OH
43215, phone 614-461-4100, fax 614-461-5828.

Special parts pricing on selected items will be offered at this event and
part orders submitted will be shipped, freight prepaid, if required.

Payment options are American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Discover Card,
cash and checks.

Please pre-register with DMC (Houston) for our planning. If
pre-registering with DMC by October 15th, a special gift will be put
aside for you and awarded at the event in Columbus. We are looking
forward to a fantastic event and hope to see you there. You will not be
disappointed.

Cordially,

Stephen Wynne. President

Hello,

REMOVE T-Section from car

Start with the screws on top of the rear window that are screwed into the
black plastic that holds the back end of the T section.
When you have removed them start to remove the screws that are
hidden behind the door rubber sealers and the T-section.
There is screws in the black windshield top that you also have to remove
and when they are loose you can start with taking away the T-section.

There might be some problems if the space between the louver and the
T-section is to tight you might have to remove the louver before actualy
be able to remove the T-section.

Hope this helps

Very easy !, Open both doors, peel back the outer door seals to get to
the
3 or 4 screws on each side. Then open the rear shade, bend the
stainless
tabs down. Now, close the shade and doors. its easier with 2 people,
but
lift up on the rear of the panel slowly. It is held down to the car with
2
sided
foam tape, so just keep steady pressure and it will lift up. Then slide
it back to
release it from the front of the car.

James, I interpret this as meaning that once you retire you are no longer
elidgeble for the lower three levels. This means inductees may or may
not be retired from the auto business. Am I wrong? Can you describe
the lower three levels?

> Bob (Stockton) is sending me a nomination form now. After I get it, I

It's been a week. Any news yet?

If the nomination is based exclusively on the number of proposals filed,
then I am very surprised to see a few of the names that have beaten
JZD to the AHOF. If the nomination must include a written essay,
detailing the candidate's contributions to the industry, then I would
love to
help write John Z. DeLorean's nomination essay!

BTW if anyone will be in Columbus at the DMC warehouse on Sunday, I'll
see you there. Maybe a few of us can discuss the AHOF Sunday
afternoon?

I agree halfway with you, Chase. I bought my car for $12,500 in 1993.
Yes, it would take another $2,500 to get it up to "restored" condition.
But
my car is "readily driveable" as it is. The leather in my seats is badly
cracked and there is one scratch in a rear quarter panel. So I suppose I
have a project car, but I am not worrying about those little cosmetic
things and I still drive it all the time.

Was my car a fire sale? It depends on your definition.

In 1993 I looked in local newspapers and Hemmings, and found five
DeLoreans for sale in Cleveland. Over the course of three months I
looked at them all and I educated myself about the cars as best I could.
The first four sellers wanted $15k - $20k and they all told me they had
another interested buyer who had looked at the cars before I did.

The fifth seller wanted $13k, and he told me that he had looked at three
other DeLoreans in the area that were all priced higher. Obviously he
was the "other interested buyer" the other sellers thought they had.

Immediately I realized that I was in a buyer's market. In three months of
advertising, I was the ONLY serious buyer to look at any DeLoreans! I
decided to stop looking at the $20k DeLoreans, which were only
marginally superior to the $15k cars.

The $13k DeLorean ran great and had the least frame rust. The seller
was not desperate, but he knew I was the only DeLorean buyer in town.
So we negotiated a price of $12,500 and I bought it, in spite of that
cracked leather.

In the years since I have driven that DeLorean A LOT and it draws a
crowd everywhere I go. I have had so much fun with my imperfect
DeLorean that I think it has paid for itself already. I keep promising
myself
that I will get the leather and the scratch repaired, but they never seem
critical enough for me to do them.

Today it is still a buyer's market. I think it is possible to find a
mechanically sound DeLorean for less than $15k and enjoy it.

I seem to be unable to keep gas from oozing from the fuel pump's boot
mounted on top of the gas tank. DMC in Houston seated this NEW fuel
pump slightly askew. One night, I filled my tank completely up before I
went home and parked it in the garage as usual. A few minutes later,
gas fumes filled up the house. Super Unleaded is very strong. Only an
ounce seeped out, but enough to give me a headache. Every window and
door that could be opened, definately was that night. The next day I
correctly seated the fuel pump in the tank to where the boot fits right
over the opening to the tank and then I lowered the clamp toward the
lower portion of the boot. But still, fuel finds its way out. Anybody
have similar problems or solutions? It would be greatly appreciated.

Chase,
I'm confused. If a D is well maintained and in top running order why
would it be necessary to spend 15M to restore/modify it. I'm asking 20M
for mine and it is ready for whatever workout a new owner wants to put
it through ....I wouldn't drive it otherwise. Other than gas there
isn't anything that a new owner has to do to the car.

It is a buyers market, for those who take the time to educate themselves
on
what they are buying. Having been shopping around for a good DMC, I have
seen the prices range from $9K to $65K....for vehicles that are very close
in condition. The key is how fast you need a DMC, I suppose.

The address is, appropriately enough, 319 Dublin Avenue, Columbus,
Ohio . This is in the city, near the old prison, in an industrial
section of
town. It is not especially easy to find.

Zip2 has a map of Columbus that appears to show the place correctly.
Go to:

http://www.zip2.com

click on "Get a Map" and type in the address above. Note that their map
neglects to indicate that several of the roads are one-way.

To get a physical description so you can recognize the warehouse
building you should call DMC Houston. There are other businesses
which share this huge building. As I recall, the DeLorean parts are on
the third floor.

I hope to see a bunch of you on Sunday!

I can't agree with you there. I got my car in September of 1996 for
$11,900
and only had to put $1k into it. The car's been running flawlessly since
Rob fixed it up. Over time I put another $2k into it and I'm selling it
for
$15k. I think it's a deal.

Maybe I found a good deal. I'm hoping to pass that good deal along to the
next owner.

Agreed. I use my car every day. No rust and the seats aren't splitting,
but
it has some cosmetic things that need to be fixed like the instrument
panel
binnacle, the front fascia was mispainted by the last owners, and other
minor things.

$11,900
$ 1,000
$ 2,000

$14,900

Close enough to $15K in my ballpark.

I'm assuming Chase means $15K total. I agree that this is **GENERALLY**

Subtract $2k from that. Chase said that it would take $15k to make it
DRIVEABLE. The extra $2k went to things that happened AFTER the initial
$1k. That includes a new water pump, new CV joint, new CD player, labor,
new tires, etc. These are items that died AFTER the initial $1k
investement
and shouldn't be included in the initial cost to make the car driveable.

My total price to get the car in running order was $12,900.

Hey folks! I just purchased my first DMC and happened to find this
web-site. I am way relieved! I live in Shreveport, La. and there is not
much in the way of DMC enthusiasts here. I purchased the 15,000 mile car
from my best friend who inherited it from his deceased father. Are you
ready for this, $5,000!. The car has been in storage for 8 years though
with half a tank of gas in it. I have my work cut out but it could be
worse I guess. Glad to be here!

I have only been a DeLorean owner for one month, so until I find out
how reliable my car is, I have no idea whether I paid a fair price
for
my DeLorean. However, I will describe it for the group for your
comments. I paid $9800 for the car in Portland, Oregon (1981 VIN
00984 with no upgrades). The car starts and runs fine. The body
has
a minor crease in right rear fender which can only be readily
observed
in certain light. It has 121,000 miles on it (engine was rebuilt at
90,000 miles) and was a company car, so the company paid for all
repairs necessary to fix it over time. Leather seat has crack and
the
clock doesn't work. The mechanic who looked it over said it was in
overall "good" shape considering age and miles. The front horn arm
has some rust and is cracked and needs to be repaired and
re-enforced
     (mechanic estimated $200.00).

This car is definitely a "driver" and has no collectible value.
However, we have had a great time driving the car and, of course,
people are much friendlier than when I drive my Tercel. Good deal?
Bad
Deal? Fair Deal? I don't know. Comments?

This past weekend, I was visiting the Plymouth homepage to look at
the Prowler. There is a place where you can order a brochure, and it
asks you some questions. One of the main questions is "what other
brands are you considering." Suprisingly, among all of the standard
brands (GM, Ford, Lotus, Alfa-Romeo, etc) it also had "DELOREAN" listed
as a choice. The next question asks for the make and again you have to
choose "DELOREAN."

Just thought this was kind of interesting....

I have two (2) extra copies of a special Motor Trend publication from
1996. It was entitled "100 years of the Automobile in America, a special
collector's edition." It is a nice magazine as a whole, with over 200
pages.
It has an article entitiled "Fabulous Flops: They may have
disappointed their creators, but they enriched American history" It
mentions more than a few cars, including the Bricklin, and also includes
the DeLorean. There are two big pictures of the car, one color one B &
W, that take up a whole page, and about a column worth of commentary
about the D.

I will sell these individually. I am not sure of their value, so make
offers (please tell whether you include shipping) if you are
interested. I also really want to get a DMC brochure, so I will also
trade if interested.

Thanks,

Beware, not much of the old prison remains. Most of it has been torn
down for space for the new NHL arena. If you need any specific
directions or info, let me know before then. I will email you back.

Cliff - I was told a long time ago to fill the tank only until the
nozzle clicks off - do not top off the tank or the fumes will knock
you out.

I went through the same thing that Cliff did. After VERY carefully
sealing the pump I still had fuel fumes sometimes. This happened
whenever I topped off the tank so high that the filler tube itself was
full of fuel.

It turned out that the gas was leaking through the sensor connections at
the top of my fuel gauge sender. Any time the filler tube was full
there was enough pressure for gas to seep past the solder on these
connections.

I didn't want to use any type of rubber to seal these connections, due
to the fuel contamination horror stories I had heard. So I removed the
sender unit and sealed all the connections with epoxy, which is more
neutral than rubber.

The epoxy helped, but it wasn't a complete cure. I still get a little
seepage whenever I top off the tank. Has anyone else noticed
seepage from their fuel gauge sender unit? Does anyone know if the
Tankzilla unit is sealed better than the original unit?

Mike,

I had a problem with my fuel gauge sending unit leaking every time I
filled the tank or went around corners hard, up hills, etc. I had
P.J. Grady look at it and he said it was due to a missing gasket. I
looked later an found that the gasket wasn't actually missing, just
placed wrong. It turns out there's a small tab in the sending unit
that goes through a cut-out on the circular gasket and into a slot in
the top of the fuel tank. The unit was installed improperly and the
tab did not line up. This caused the unit itself to be very loose
even when the threaded collar was very tight. The collar was, of
course, just pushing down on the plastic tab. Re-aligning the tab
properly solved the problem for good.

- --Rob Hook
P.S. If you can't quite picture what I'm talking about, just take your
sending unit out and take a look around the top of it. You'll see it.
It's towards the left hand side of the car which makes it easy to
miss.

reply:

Hello Chase,

I hate to disagre but I have seen many 15K DMC's that were in good
driving condition.

My DMC came off a used car lot (show room) after sitting a year and
with just a few needed repairs, now a show DMC, spotless, all original
and not a speck of dirt any where DMC. Mostly it just takes time and
care, not a great deal of money. I can't see why "Any DeLorean will
cost at least $15,000 to make readily driveable!!" ....so do you mean
that a "$13,500 is a project car" will cost $28,500 befor it is up to
snuff?

It's clear that there are many DMC's that are daily use types in the
15K range as any one can see just by watching this very list.
