Subject: DML: DeLorean Clock
Hello DMC Readers
My 81 clock sometimes will display and sometimes not. It does keep the

correct time and when it does work it will stay on. Any thoughts?

It is an Automatic and the display lights for the shift area is out as

well. Checked the fuse and the bulb but no luck.  I cleaned the contact

for the clock where it plugs into the main harness. Round connection.

Subject: DML: DMC Crash worthiness
A couple years ago a local trooper pulled me over.  I immediately started

sweating since I was driving to the tach and jumped to the conclusion that

it wasn't working either.  Turns out he was doing accident reconstruction

work relative to a fatal Delorean accident.  An oncoming vehicle had 

crossed

the centerline and the two vehicles did the usual dance where each is

deciding  where to go.  The D got broadsided and the owner killed.
I expressed surprise indicating one of the reasons the gullwings were

selected was due to their strength and accident worthiness.  He indicated

that what usually happens in a side collision is not that the door 

contacts

the occupant but rather the occupant contacts the door.  The occupant's 

side

ways motion either causes sever neck injury or head damage from the

accident.  This is why you are seeing airbags on the side.
The trooper offered the following advice "go for the right shoulder in 

such

an event since there is a much higher chance of survival."
Since I enjoy reading messages from all of you, remember to drive smart 

and

defensively and not to get to confident of the vehicles crash worthiness,

regardless of its rating.

Subject: DML: Jacking up Deloreans
I've jacked up my D what should be hundreds of times by now and have never

had any problems.  I STRONGLY recommend that anytime you jack the frame to

use padded (rubber or wood) pads so that you do not scratch the frame to

bare metal.  I also like to spread the load more than a standard floor 

jack

so that it does not crack the finish.  If you do scratch or crack the

finish, water will get in and it will eat you frame until you have no 

metal

under the epoxy(but the epoxy will still look good).  
To support the car when working or over winter, I made stands of scrap 2x6

laid on their sides.  They have a base wider and the tops are larger than

most jack stands.  When removing the body I used 4x4s to span the body for

jacking and storage.
I also work by the rule that no matter how much I love my D it does not 

feel

the same for me.  I make sure it is well supported.

you I'm not the oldest person on the list {I'm only 15}). I saw the 

movie Back to the Future, and that amplified my interest. I started, 

just recently, to study up on the car. I have visited too many web 

sites, and downloaded so many pictures, that I have one for my 

backround, and I have a slideshow of DeLorean pictures as a screen 

saver. I'm new on this list. Since I'm so young, I don't have alot of 

money, and I can't drive, yet I still have this burning desire for a 

DeLorean. Hey! Call it a weakness!!! Whatever. Please contact me at my

identified his DeLorean by three digits, possibly confusing some folks. 

He emailed me, quite indignant, saying that I made him feel "like a jerk".
Claude, I apologize if that made you feel like a jerk.
Moderating the DML for over three years and an estimated 7,000 messages, 

I'm sure that I made a few bad calls in messages that I have posted, have 

not posted and postings that I have authored, as the one above indicates.
Again, my apologies to Claude for apparently singling him out, that was

Hmm.. I love problems, it makes the mad scientist in me come out.
Solution 1:  Cover the speakers in a like-colored acustically

transparent material.  Not as appealing as a well designed

speaker grille, or a high-tech subwoofer cone, but it'll do.
Solution 2: Make yourself a piece of carpeted hardboard

big enough to cover all speaker openings. It can lay flat on

the rear shelf (virtually unnoticable) and be pivoted upwards

to hide your speakers.  You could even get fancy and attatch

hinges to the base, and maybe even a pull cord to raise it.

OR it could be spring loaded with a clip in the down position:

just swivel the clip and it swings up to hide the speakers!

OK, I'm starting to get a little off topic here...  
<sigh> The things we must to just to have good speakers, eh?

I have shopped for such a unit, and have found some that will fit, but

none that fit "Perfectly".
My requirements have been:

	2 10 inch woofers (or larger)

	Must fit under the rear dome light (about 9 inches high)

	Must follow the slope of the cargo net, so the net can be put back.
I have not found anything that will meet those requirements, so I have

started to build my own box.  This has not gone so well because of the

odd angles of the area.  The bottom slopes down, so the profile of the

box should only have a single right angle (at the top rear corner).
Any one working on a similar project? or found any pre made units that

will fit?

I got a new cargo net a few years ago from the Kapac Warehouse,

which is now owned by DMC Houston 1-800-USA-DMC1.  They probably

still have nets in stock.  If your net is like my old one then the whole

problem is most likely in the elastic.  You *might* be able to repair it 

by

replacing the elastic.  If you want to attempt this check out a fabric 

store

for heavy black elastic cord and let us all know if it works.

My '81 5 speed is starting to have some problems with 2nd gear.  It seems

that when I first start driving, shifting from first into 2nd is a 

problem.

It feels 'mushy',  there isn't the usual clunk I hear and feel in the

shifter.  However, after a minute or so, the problem goes away.  Then I 

can

shift from 1st to 2nd without any difficulty.  But most of the time when I

downshift into second, the same problem happens.  I think it must be the

syncromesh because if I am at a stop I can shift into second without any

problem, it only is a problem upshifting while moving first mile or so and

some of the time when downshifting.  Here's my questions: are there any

adjustments from the outside or does the whole transmission have to come

out?  Can it be a problem with the fluid (I was leaking fluid from the 

seals

and had my station top it off and the fluid was the right number but I

noticed that the leakage had a milky color which I wonder if was water in

it) - I had the seals replaced today and the fluid topped off again and 

the

problem is the same if not worse.  The problem does seem to be worse as 

the

days get colder so I was thinking maybe the fluid is too thick.
If it does need to be taken apart, is this a really big job to work on the

syncromesh if that's it and should I take it to a transmission shop vs my

local mechanic who is usually pretty good at general repairs?

Recently an overzealous subscriber mistakenly reported the death of the 

DML. Nothing could be further from the truth. I haven't been sued, or 

driven to give up the list by my fiancee. My recent DeLorean accident 

hasn't caused me to lose interest in the marque.
The DeLorean Mailing List is moving forward with plans to move to a new 

server, though that will be transparent to the average netsurfer. Credit 

cards will soon be accepted for products at the website, and the third 

edition of the DeLorean Owners Directory is on track for an early 1999 

release. The next 'zine (#4) is in process, too.
But the biggest news regarding DMC-News will have to wait a few more 

weeks...I think everyone will be be very happy with the news, too.

At the Cincinatti Show, Rob Grady had a speaker "box" on the rear shelf,

I think he called it "Ampzilla"?
It looked nice and had super sound, I do not know what it cost.

It's a Motorola alternator.  On a long trip doing turnpike driving a 

couple

of days ago, the voltmeter finally got up to exactly 13 volts but 

absolutely

no higher.  If you could let me know where and what to check for with

grounding if this could point to the problem, I'd be very appreciative.

Jason,  I can totally relate to your passion early in life as I have

been obssesed with DeLoreans ever since Back to the Future when I was 11

years old.  Actually I think it took my interest before then as I

vaguely remember a gull winged car that would sometimes be parked at a

supermarket nearby.  Looking back I think it was a Bricklin but at leat

I was thinking in the right direction.  So for 13 years I obsessed, cut

every article & picture out of the back issues of car magazines at my

High School library, joined the association, bought all the souvenirs,

etc., read all the books.  I am writing because I want you to know that

no matter how long you wait your dream will come true.  In February of

this year I became the proud owner of VIN #0981, 81 gas flap, black

interior, it is everything I dreamed of and more.  She's sitting in my

driveway as I write.  So dreams do come to those who wait, I got her at

23 years old and I am amongst the new generation of younger owners. 

Best wishes & I know you will be among them someday as well.

Hey List,
  I have been experiencing some minor electrical problems in my De lorean 

that

I just wanted to ask the list before I did anything about them.  First, 

after

I turn on my wipers and then turn them off they always to a single swipe 

every

7 seconds.  It stops after I turn off the car and starts up again 

whenever I

turn that wiper on again.  I was thinking it was the wiper delay thing or

something, but I wasn't sure.  Second, my fuel pump would turn on for a 

second

and my R.P.M's would flicker if I flashed the bright lights when the 

engine is

off, I'm no sure where to start with this problem.  And Finally, my 

drivers

side lock, both locks and unlocks both doors, but the passenger lock only

makes the drivers side lock button flicker like it wants to unlock it or 

lock

it but it can't, is this a bad connecting at the passenger side solenoid 

or do

I have to look elsewhere for the problem?  Also my car is idling at around

1500-2000 R.P.M's, how would I be able to lower that number to where its

supposed to be.  Also, what R.P.M. is it supposed to idle at?

Thanks to all for your responses. I forgot to mention that I did know 

about

the adjustment nut below the steering wheel. I have tightened this as much

as I can and still it creeps down. I can push it up again but a few 

minutes

later it goes back down. 
The up and down movement is not due to the adjustment knob being loose.

It's hard to explain but it's as if it has a pivot right where the

adjustment knob is and it kind of bends. As I said it's hard to explain.
Anyway since no one else has had a similar experience, I will try to fix

it, however I can. If anyone is interested in the outcome, you can e-mail

me direct.

well there ladies and gents i tried to put this is out before but i

guess it didn't work. i am going back to the idea of the DML window

stickers i saw quite a few issues back. I think that this a good idea in

support for the list. My car club uses the same idea as we put stickers

with the club name on our back window. I could get ones made for the DML

through my club and get them much cheaper.
 All I need to know.....

	1.  Is there people out there in support of this? I would be

extremely 					willing to do this if there was support.
	2.	What should it say? (possibly.......WWW.DMCNEWS.COM)
	3.	And how many people would be interested? (Delorean owners or not.)

		I doubt they would be much and all benifits would go to Espey and

the 				DML.

Subject: DML: Shuddering--bucking engine
Hi, 
Has anyone out there experienced this?
Several weeks ago.  My car would start to shudders or bucks when it

accelerates.  

It wants to die out, but it picks up again and does this in secession 

several

times, then it  smooths out with some loses of power after it stops

shuddering.  It does this whether the engine is hot or cold.
I call PJ Grady and Rob said that there maybe water in the system or bad 

gas.

I added dry gas and fuel injector cleaner hoping to resolve this.  I did 

that

for several tanks of gas over a period of one week.  I still had the same

problem, so for safety measures I had PJ Grady change the fuel pump along 

with

a new inlet suction screen and the two "in and out" lines from the pump

(external).  Thinking that one of these componets was the cause of the

problem?  We did kept the two rubber caps and the fuel pump suction 

(internal)

line for they are still good.   
Changing the fuel pump helped in the beginning.  It gave the engine more

"pep."  The new pump was nosier then the old one (the old one is 30 months

old).  It has been two weeks or so, and the DeLorean is doing it again.  

The

same behavior as several weeks ago before the changing the fuel pump.  It 

has

happen again today and yesterday.  
The strange thing is that is does this when the fuel tank is below nine

gallons, when the gauge reads about 1/4 tank.  Associated with the 

shuddering

of the engine the fuel pump makes the noise ONLY upon or when the clutch 

is

engaged.  That is strange, for it has

never done this before and the symptoms goes away when the tank gets fill 

up?
A bad new fuel pump?  This is a new one on me.  Answers?

OK so I have just come back inside after playing around with the D. I

noticed that the end of the steering column (the one which stops at the

metal plate, behind the pedals) is not attached to anything and moves

around freely ( and I mean a-round), to some degree. There must be a cable

or something inside the steel shaft that stops it coming off altogther. 

So,

is this normal?

Well, my parents just bought a brand new Volvo S70, and while I was

looking through some Volvo engine specs page, at the page

http://www2.mf.uni-lj.si/~jurbancic/engines.htm

I stumbled across the listing for the PRV (Volvo, of course, calls it the

B28F) and there is mention in there of a "B28E" which is a

high-compression fuel-injected engine reputed to produce between 155 and

170 HP (without catalytics).  The B28F that we all know so well is listed

in the same page as producing 136 HP, which seems about right.
Are there any Volvo engine wizards out there who might know if this B28E

is substantially the same as the B28F?  If it is, then it might be

possible to drop one of them directly in (perhaps using an existing

DeLorean-spec oil pan etc.) and gain a few HP. A turbocharged B28E would

probably easily exceed 200HP, possibly as much as 215-220 HP.  It could be

a big win, the largest advantage being the potential for easy conversion

since the engine is nearly identical to the stock one.  Anyone know

anything about this B28E?

end, that

little tune up adventure cost me $650.00 CDN.
    Forgive my ignorance, but are the DMC-12 cylinder heads aluminium?  

The

mechanic said that  problems like that occur, when plugs are installed on 

a warm

or hot engine.  He recommended doing so on a cold engine, as the 

characteristics

of heated aluminium (softer metal) can lead to nasty results, like in my 

case.

Might be, but since it affects only second gear I would consider

mechanical problems first.  The milkiness could have easily come from

outside the seals and might not even be present inside the transmission,

in which case this is ruled out.  Especially since you just had your fluid

changed in the process of changing the seals (although contaminants can

remain in the transmission during this process, I still can't account for

why only one gear, second gear at that, would be affected). 
Other things that can sometimes cause hard shifting might be bent shifter

forks (seems to happen to DeLoreans a lot) and worn synchro gears.  But

worn gears frequently cause grinding while shifting.  Bent shifter forks

can be fixed fairly easily, worn synchro gears is harder. 
I think that what you might have is a fairly minor problem that is

exacerbated by the cold weather, which makes many transmissions shift

poorly.  How many miles are on the car?  Higher-mileage cars tend to

suffer more "wear and tear" transmission problems and just general stiff

shifting is among these.

Well, how much do you trust your local mechanic and how much does he know

about transmissions? :}  See if you can find out what the problem really

is before deciding who to have fix it.

Larry,

Your "mushy" 2nd gear problem is probably due to a bent roll pin. The

DeLorean manual trans is a standard set up and is easily serviced by any

experienced trans shop. Removal and disassembly of the unit is required.

Your local mechanic, with the help of the DeLorean Workshop & Parts

manuals, should be able to easily replace this item.

Mine is a 1983 D.

1.  In reading through the past lists, I found a question that I also 

have.

Someone asked where to get a copy (or where to download) the service 

manuals

for the D.  A response stated that they were available from a

Hydro-E-Lectric.  I called information to get the number, but the number I

was given was only a fax line.  Does anyone have this number or know know 

of

another place to obtain the manuals?
2.  I read in the 'zine about the cooling fan re-wire.  Upon inspecting my

D, I found that it has the 3 wire jumper fix (with two 20 amp fuses).  I

also realized that anytime the ignition is on, the cooling fans are 

running.

I don't think this supposed to happen.  I am planning on changing it to

upgrade suggested in the 'zine, but I was wondering if anyone had any

suggestions about the constant run problem.
3.  Also, I have one turn signal that flashes normally and one that 

flashes

very quickly.  They both work, but this does not seem normal.  Is this a

common problem for the D?  Does it sound like a flasher is needed, a bad

ground, or some exotic problem that I should know about for my car?

I was out with my mom one day, and I spotted a great looking DeLorean at 

a car dealership. I made her stop the car so that I could have a look. 

To make a long story short, I insisted that I go on a test drive with 

this thing. Now, two weeks later, it is still there, and we have the 

intention of test driving it. We got the keys, and unlocked the door. 

Now, this may seem steep (and it realy is steep once you hear about it's 

condition) , but it cost $26,000. We opened the handle, and the 

hydrolics did nothing. I lifted the door full-open, and it slammed shut 

again, right after I let go. To save my time and yours, I will simply 

tell you what's wrong with it. All the hydrolics are shot, on both 

doors, the back engine compartment doors, and the hood. The the driver 

side window did not operate. The passenger side did, but it only opened. 

I had to push it back up. The dashboard is discolored due to the sun. 

The hood for the trunk does not latch closed, also. It also might 

contain some hidden problems. This car quite obviously is not worth as 

much as I mentioned earlier. My dad was contemplating pechasing a 

DeLorean for me to drive when I get older, but he, like myself, was 

greatly dishearted at the site a price of this car.

        There is a positive side to this car, surprisingly. 1. it is a 

delorean   2. 1982, with ONLY 450 MILES!      3. Engine looks like new. 

         The car dealership is going to try to get it started, and they 

will call us some time this week for the test drive. (previously, it did 

not start due to the battery)

        Could someone please tell me how much this car is REALLY worth? 

Please? I figure if they drop the price down to your suggestion, my dad 

might purchase it for me to work on until the time I can drive. Thanks.

Your clock receives power through the red orange wire that goes to the

light dimmer. Check the connections at the dimmer. Your gear shift

indicator lamp has either dropped out of its holder or the lamp is burnt

out.

of its design and position, the pulley will usually deform when being

   A company in Seattle, Morris Manor Collectables, has a line of small

"matchbox" size cars made by a company called Autosclupt.  This line 

includes

a Delorean. It is about 1/92scale and is done in a resin/aluminum material

that looks almost exactly like peweter. This model is molded in 1 piece 

and

has no working parts, it is just for display.  It is very nicely detailed 

and

sells for about $15ea.

    Lori Newby, who owns this shop, just informed me that Autosclupt has 

just

come out with a larger, 1/43 scale, version of the Delorean. I have not 

seen

it yet, but I understand it is also very nicely done and detailed.  Cost 

on

the larger version is about $42ea.

I don't know where you live, but if it's anywhere near Los Angeles, I'd be

very happy to show you my car.  The problem with lo-mile cars is 

classically

described by your experience.  Some dealer gets a lo-mile car and jacks 

up the

price. A person buys it and the fun begins.  Often the buyer has paid way 

too

much for a car that is going to be very expensive to bring back to life.  

On

the other hand, you might be the one in a thousand who lucks into a very 

good

car.  BTW, apparently, many lo-mile cars are really hi-mile cars that had

broken angle drives. It's no biggie except that, without the service 

records

as a back-up, there is no way to know what you are looking at when you 

read

the miles on the odometer.  Take your time, there is a great 'D' out there
