... because we already have "Tucker: A Man and His Dream."
I just watched this movie on AMC. I had seen it before when it was in theaters, but I had forgotten how similar it is to the DeLorean story. I don't know if AMC plans to show it again soon, but if they do, do yourself a favor and watch it. Even if they don't, you might want to go rent it.
As a bonus, they didn't interrupt it with any commercials, and they showed it in letterbox format, too. What a deal.
(Also, if anybody ever asks you about the helicopter engine in your DeLorean... this is where they got the idea from. :} )

I too have sent a message to Chris about the 1980 question. He has yet to get back to me.
I am from the UK and the model years here were designated in the same way as over you way!
His details are all correct except for the 1980 part, just inaccurate info, that is all....
I am trying to track down TLC 35 (2 pics of this grey interiored right-hooker are shown on the Chris site) so if you know anything about it please let me know.

I sent a message to Chris about a week ago (when the first thread was posted) but have not heard any response...... ----- Original Message -----So, could it be that a converted early 1981 DeLorean that was built and sold in Great Britain in December of 1980, was actually titled as a 1980?
BTW, has anyone bothered to ask Chris?

Actually this is an aftermarket converted car and now resides in Australia. ALL the factory right-hookers with the exception of Dave's WIA 8096 (the one in BFTF) have the "Euro" prototype light clusters. The "factory" right-hookers were not converted at Dunmurry, but were worked on under comission at a company in Andover, but were taken back to the factory and again with the exception of WIA 8096, AFAIK remained there as prototypes until being sold off at the liquidation auctions (that's why they all have SIJ **** [irish] plates). The cars I have seen have May 82 build dates, but this may simply be the time when they decided to put VIN plates on them. Steve Wynne said he thought the Hooper's right-hander had a very early (prototype?) underbody on it. Yet it has VIN #12179, May 82.
In the UK a new car will be dated from the day it is REGISTERED with DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Association). If Dave were to register his mint left-hooker now, because it has never been registered anywhere in the world, and has fewer than 3000 miles on the clock, he would get this year's V plate as a brand new car. Generally a car which has been registered elsewhere in the world would be registered here with the year on the VIN plate - most are W, X and Y in the UK.
Best Wishes,

Rather than going to all this work, I think that James Espey at DMC-Houston has a list of VIN/Chassis/Engine numbers for at least part of the production run. Try e-mailing him to see if he has the info you need. If so, it will be much more acceptable to DMV and insurance companies than info from individuals since this would be official factory info.

It's an Ilco key blank # VO 73 X29 which is a Volvo blank.
I had a local locksmith do mine. $1.50 each and they work perfectly. Not everyone will agree with me on this (as the previous discussion showed), but I've had problems getting properly working keys from mass merchandisers. No matter how good the key cutting equipment is, they still have to have someone who can choose the right key blank and use the equipment properly.

If that is the case, any 1981 DeLorean that was built and sold before January 1, 1981 in the UK (remember here that the 1981 model began production in December of 1980), AND was registered with the UK DVLA in before January 1, 1981 would, in fact, have been titled and registered as a 1980 model!
So then it is entirely possible that there is a DeLorean lurking somewhere in the UK that is (was) titled and registered as a 1980! This is assuming that there were, in fact, DeLoreans sold in the UK before January 1, 1981. Does anyone know if there were any of the DeLoreans built during December of 1980, that were sold in the UK? Were there any DeLoreans actually shipped from the factory to anywhere before January 1, 1981? I know DMC was under a lot of pressure to get the car into showrooms ASAP.

Re: the chasis/vin correlation. First off, I never realized that there was a separate chassis #. This morning I crawled under for a look and found the plate as described. The numbers on this plate are punched from the back (as on a license plate) and are about 1" tall. The chassis number on my car is 004721; my D is an OCT 1981 car and my VIN ends 005830. Obviously, this is not a match! I have had my D for almost ten years, and to the best of my knowledge, it is unmolested. I am eager to hear the results of other inspections. Hi Phil,
I think it is called _louver_ (spelling?) Initially, there is no
louver. The rear vertical window is always there since the prototype.
I think the louver it is just an add on.
