I think its more like the Lotus Europa folks, if you were to fill the rea= r windows with stainless ( above engine cover ) the rear becomes very simil= ar to the D. The Louvers are important tho they do cool the engine / engine compartment

Hy,
I checked the timing of the ignition of our D (with a strobe-light) and found it is set to late, about 8 deg. instead of 13 deg. as is should be according to the manual. Now I am puzzeld; to adjust the timing one has to reposition the distributor, to get acces to the distributor I have to remove the air-manifold and the k-jetronic valve. So how do I know what position the distributor should be in ? Also i found a posting in the archives that said never to adjust the timing of a D. Should I leave the timing as it is until I have checked all the other systems ? The engine is running almost OK, just sometimes a little rough.
I am replacing all the sensors, relays and switches at this time. I found that some of them have been replaced by a previous owner with not original types. I have found the original type nrs. of most of the sensors on the internet, yet I do not have the correct type and manufacturer for two devices:
a) lambda thermo-switch (probably Bosch) b) themparature sending unit for temp-gauge on dashboard
Does anybody know the original types and any replacement parts ?

Remember the first 500 or so cars were crash-tested, and also the car in question (which I am convinced is a "normal" production year) is a mis-nomer becasue it has a personalised plate and therefore one cannot tell the year from it (the plate was sold seperately from the car). Rob Lamrock has some details on this particular car.
For everyone's info, a UK number plate as standard is in the form of a letter grouped with three numbers, and three letters. The letter with the three numbers designates the year (recently this has been changed to every 6 months), and the three letters designates location of registration (to some bizarre code).
Add to this the fact that the numbers cycled over from XXX 111Y to A111 XXX from 1983 to 84. For Example Ian Titley's '83 D has the plate UOA 596Y, My car (Citroen), registered in 1989 is F244 XCV.
Irish plates, which many D's carry, are in the form of 3 letters, 4 numbers.

After the Gulf war, Captain Steve Carrington "rescued" one of the Kuwaiti cars. Built Dec '81 and VIN # CD010447. There were also dealerships in Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Most of these cars were purchased by oil workers out there.

I heard somewhere the louvers were originally meant as a "GTi" trim option, but they reduced drag and also helped cool the engine, drawing air up through the engine compartment. Thus they were added as standard.

On page 16 of "DMC-News, the Zine" #3 made by James Espey there's a complete description on how to fit such a luggagerack yourself...
you can find the zine at ftp://dmcnews.com/pub/zine003.pdf

To all, Thought I would jump in here to help the moderators. Before everyone crawls under their D's to look at their chassis numbers and in turn start an avalanche of posts that there chassis and Vin numbers don't match; there not supposed to.

No ! No! No!, You do not have to remove the intake manifold to adjust the timing. The distributor lock nut is adjacent to intake tube # 4 and spark plug # 4.You will need a long open end wrench to loosen the nut.
BTW: Are you sure you are referencing the correct plug and pulley notch when taking your reading. Eight degrees is almost outside of the operational range of the engine. As a matter of fact the DeLorean ignition timing is so precise that the factory setting can virtually be left unchanged for the life of the car.

The timing can be adjusted without removing anything. With a good flashlight look at the base of the distributor. It can be seen ( barely ) at the drivers side of the engine near the fire wall. There is a nut there locking the distributor in place. I belive it takes an11mm wrench but I'm relying on my memory. Loosen the nut and with the timing light connected, rotate the distributor until you see 13 degrees before top dead center. There are two notches on the crankshaft pulley so you can use cyl number one or cyl number six. Number one is at the right front of the engine and number 6 is at the left rear. Line the notch on the pully up with the 13 degree line on the timing cover.

Just a reminder to let all DeLorean owners know that we will be in the area next Saturday and Sunday to perform inspections, servicing and a tech session. Everyone is invited, even if you don't have your DeLorean stop on by and introduce yourself. Go to our web-site for complete details.
If the moderators would be so kind, several list members have reported to me that they were unable to access our web-site therefore I was hoping that I could have our press release re-printed here.
PRESS RELEASE 10/08/99 DeLorean Services of Atlanta Georgia announces its House Call Tour to Cleveland Ohio. DeLorean Services, the nations only “on location” repair service, continuous it’s unique maintenance service by visiting Cleveland Ohio on the last weekend of the month. Joe LoRe' , owner operator of DeLorean Services, will travel to Cleveland with his son Alan to conduct a technical clinic for DeLorean owners in that part of the country. Better known as “DMC Joe” by DeLorean lover’s worldwide, he made the following comments: “We are really looking forward to this trip for two main reasons. First, we have lots of fans in the Cleveland area, many of which we regularly converse with via e-mail and by phone. This will be an opportunity to meet them and their cars in person. Secondly we will be rolling back the clock to experience the excitement and relaxation of the train. When we planned this trip we weren’t aware that Amtrak was about to roll out there “Companion Special”. This very limited special allows two people who are traveling identical schedules to pay just one rail fair. This saving will allow us to take advantage of first class accomedidations. This includes a private room that sleeps two with meals included. I travel this way whenever time and budget permit; it will be Alan’s first “real train” experience. We are very fortunate that we are being provided a fully equipped service facility with lifts to inspect, and service many DeLoreans during our three-day stay. While we are there we will visit the DMC warehouse in Columbus courtesy of Stephen Wynne. In addition to inspections and service we will also conduct a Tech Session on Sunday the 24th from 3 to 4 PM. Pizza and hot dogs will be provided. We invite everyone to come visit us during our three day stay, even if you don’t bring your DeLorean come on by and say hello”. The event will begin on Saturday October 23 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM resume at 11:00 AM Sunday October 24th with a Tech Session at 3:00 PM to 4 PM. There is no cover or admission to attend. Owners reserving time for a complete 50-point inspection and service, if requested or required. A fee is imposed to lock in a reservation. Reservations confirmed prior to midnight Monday October 18 will receive a “Air Bleed By-Pass Kit” at 50% off the regular price including installation. Vehicles may be dropped off for later pick up. For complete details visit their web-site at www.deloreanservices.com or you can e-mail DMC Joe at dmcjoe(AT)att.net. Reservations can also be made by phone at 770 631-4800

There were many variations within "model years" for the DeLorean. My '82 has no gas flap and no relief lines on the luggage compartment "hood," but does have the DeLorean name (small) on the hood toward the front. It's tough to categorize model years by cosmetic details, which tended to change on a constant basis. A good example is the original in-windshield radio antenna, which was supplanted early on by the rear retractable mast.

It comes down to documentation. What can be documented as original and what can't be. I have a copy of a DMC memorandum that says these labels were put on the 83's, primarily to differentiate them from the 82's at a glance. Unfortunately, you don't mention what your VIN is, but this wouldn't be the first time that the "documentation" contradicted what was seen, or contradicted other documents.

The 12 in DMC-12 stands for what was supposedly going to be the base price of the DeLorean, which was $12,000. Unfortunately JZD didn't come close to his original goal and the base price started near $26,000. So therfore the model could have been the DMC-26.

The DeLorean doesn't *really* have model years. The factory made all changes (not just cosmetic ones) whenever they became available. Part of JZD's "ethical car" concept was that model years were just invented by the car makers to make people buy more new cars. So, as far as DMC was concerned, there were no model years. There had to be a model year to print on the title, so there were, officially, model years, but the factory didn't pay any attention to them.

Phil,
The early 81 DeLoreans had the gas flap & lines on the bonnet. Early in '81 they discontinued the flap due to stamping problems. ( I believe the small radiused corners cracked) Later that year, they decided the lines added nothing but more stamping problems and cost to the vehicle and they were discontinued. Also early models had "In the windscreen" radio antennas, a bad GM idea, that caused poor reception. DeLorean went to a series of manual front and rear antennas (some with keys) and finally a power rear antenna. The DMC "12" I don't believe anyone really knows where this number 12 came from, the JZD theory to sell his car for $12K is widely held but in my opinion nonsense, I prefer the 12th sketch from the Italian designer or someone grabbed the # 12 "Out of the air" theories.

I can put the hood line thing to rest right now. I saw the last 1981 and the first 1982 produced side by side. The differences are as follows: 1981 had hood lines and the 1982 did not. Off the top of my head I cannot remember if the 82 had the hood badge or not, but when I get the pictures I took of the two developed, I will let you know. One other BIG difference between the two was the grain of the stainless steel. The 81 was a very smooth, silky grain. The 82 had a more rough, and jaggedy grain to it. The difference is VERY subtle. It isn't noticible unless the cars are side by side and you are looking very closely at them and looking for a difference. I spoke with Rob Grady about this, and he confirmed to me that the factory did indeed change the brushing techniques for the 82 model year. I know for a fact that neither one of these cars was ever re-brushed, because they have never been titled and have been in storage since they were built and shipped. I saw them myself. These observations are not 2nd hand. These cars are brand new and untouched. (Please don't e-mail me for more info about these cars. I just want to answer this question.) I hope this helps. ---Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: <PaulF52093(AT)aol.com> To: <dmcnews(AT)egroups.com> Sent: Monday, October 18, 1999 12:20 PM Subject: [DML] Re: 81, 82, 83

When I bought my DeLorean 1 1/2 years ago, it had a cracked rear view mirro= r. I just called one of the suppliers and ordered a new one (about $50 I t= hink). In most circumstances, you can get most any part you need from the = suppliers.

I bought my late '81 ( Nov '81 ) new with the Quality Assured sticker on the window. I discover several things about my car that told me my car had gone through the East Coast Quality Assurance Center. I don't think the sticker was unique to the "83 model.
