Chris Sheppard has a nice fix for this that he showed us (Chapter 41)
at the last tech session. His e-mail address is available on the
DeLorean Home page. The fix involves removing the relay controlling
the A/C lights and inserting a jumper in its place. If you check your
car's wiring diagrams you can quickly reproduce Chris' patch. I don't
want to take credit for Chris' patch, so contact him directly for the
specifics.

Subject: Parts Car
I will be spending part of the holiday weekend looking at a De Lorean parts
car. The guyhas no idea even what year it is, just that it has MAJOR front
end damage. If anyone would like me to look for anything for them, let me
know.

I believe it says in Stainless Steel Illusion (SSI)that you want to cut 4"
off the back and then swap them with the front springs. I've never been an
advocate of the cut and swap method of lowering the front end, and there
are aftermarket springs available that have been specifically designed for
this (as I'm sure you know). Certainly this is the more expensive way to
go, but then you have the originals should you decide to return it to
stock, and you don't run the risk of perhaps cutting your original springs
incorrectly.
Speaking of SSI, there is engineering drawing of the car in the book that
shows many of the dimensions, though I couldn't determine if the front ride
height was indicated.

Subject: DeLorean-related books
For the benefit of those that are unfamiliar with the DeLorean books in
existence, I have put a summary of them at the web site
(http://www.goodnet.com/users/mikasa/oldnews.html) and listed their titles
below (OP= out of print). I have several copies of most of these (the
exception being Stainless Steel Ilusion), and will sell any of them to
someone who needs/wants them for $10 each, UPS ground included. All in good
condition and complete.
Ona Clear Day You Can See General Motors by J. Patrick Wright with John DeLorean
Hard Driving: My Years with John Z. DeLorean by Bill Haddad (OP)
Dream Maker: The Rise and Fall of John Z. DeLorean by Ivan Fallon and James
Srodes (OP)
Grand Delusions by Hillel Levin (OP)
DeLorean by John DeLorean (OP)
DeLorean: Stainless Steel Illusion by John Lamm (OP)

Knut -
Some thoughts I had after reading your message and perusing SSI again..
Page 111 in SSI, cut 4.0 in off springs in rear, swap with front.
Page 123 photo of John and R&T editor, notice lowered front end. This
was in March of 1981!
Page 109, photo of prototype (sliding windows) in AMEX catalog - lowered
front end.
Page 42 and 43 - caption reads "Detail drawings shows all measurements
with the rear engine Renault drivetrain". However - drawing also shows
it with 15" tires on front and 16" tires on rear :(
More as I think about it...

P.J. Grady, Inc in West Sayville, NY manufactures new tail light boards
with high intensity lamps ... have gold contacts on printed circuit
board. I had them installed about five years ago and have had no
trouble since.
The fuel filter is standard Volvo
The oil filter Peugeot
The proper air filter is also Peugeot
The interior key assembly is Volvo
The interior AC/heater blower motor is GM/Delco
Was anyone able to find out if there was a way to replace the standard
radio with a newer one, using a DIN opening, without permanently
destroying the original radio opening ?
By the way ... when I bought my D, in 1984, the dealer had one that
had been painted by KAPAC ... it was mirror black and was absolutely a
head turner.

Subject: Taillights and springs
Sorry Knut, you're the one that told me about this taillight fix.
When I had my other DMC I got the car to look right, that is level rather
than nose high,by cutting half a coil off stock front springs. Since they
were all built nose high I don't think you will find any specs that differ.

Have you gotten any info from the mailing list about this problem? You
may want to request info on the radio wiring diagrams as well as the
status of the ASI company itself (I believe defunct). As you probably
know, the price for a replacement original radio from KAPAC is pretty
high (around $500 I believe).
The shop I took mine to was an ordinary car audio place in Utah. I have
since moved to Portland, OR and do not have a reference to the place I
took it to. I don't remeber the nature of your problem, but in many
cases the cause of cassette problems is mechanical instead of
electrical. If the readio is dead (electrical failure), the failed part
on the circuitboard can often be identified by the fact that it often
will be burned and discolored.
I'm surprised that a reputable shop don't have enough experience with
radios in general to help you. Have you checked with DeLorean One or
other DMC specialty shops about radio repairs?

DeLorean: Stainless Steel Illusion, published 1982 by John Lamm
The only *real* book written about the De Lorean car, very hard to get now.
It's the book Dave mentioned in his message board that he found for $200. I
recently sold my extra copy to someone for $200.
If you don't have it, I'm sure there will be one or more for sale at the
expo. In any case, I'll be bringing mine to the expo, or I can make you copies
of pertinent pages.
