I had a similar starting problem with my car when I first got it. The symptoms I
experienced were that the starter would not crank even though I seemingly had a
full battery load and the car was warm. I could get started with a jump or by
topping off the battery with my charger (a battery charger is a DMC owners best
friend).
The problem was simply a corroded grounding bolt where the negative side of the
battery connects to the frame. This bolt tends to electro-corrode giving a poor
ground connection. When you get jump-started, you are supplying power directly
between the positive system side and a new ground connection established with
the jumper cable and your car starts right up.

A few issues back, DeLorean World Magazine highlighted a group insurance policy
negotiated by the DeLorean Owners Association. I personally have found some less
expensive alternatives and am currently insured with State Farm (although I hear
they are no longer writing new policies on DeLoreans). Hagerty also insures
DeLoreans (as well as other classic cars) for a fairly reasonable rate, although
there are usually some mileage and usage limitations.
The DeLorean is usually not put in the same class as other sports cars because
of its low power, and should certainly not be classed with Lamborghinis and
Bugattis. The proper class is more likely a "collectors" car, but not a "sports"
car. My insurance premium (around $360 every 6 months) is lower than most
commodity sports cars.

My '82 (#10570) had the same problem at about 25K miles, and I ended up
replacing the clutch slave and master cylinder ($230 USD plus labor), BUT I
believe I could have just replaced the stock teflon clutch line with a
braided steel one ($170 USD from DeLorean One or Swedish AutoService) and
gottenthe same results (the clutch lines are run right along side the
radiator return pipes, and as the teflon line gets hot, it'll "stretch" and
make the clutch seem like it is slipping or not working at all). There is
also a clutch linkage adjustment part sold by DeLorean One that may remedy
all or part of your problem as well. I don't have their catalog in front of
me, but I will look it up and forward the details to you.

By first saying that I am not in Florida now, I have in the past had State
Farm insurance in Florida and had no problem with my old '81 De Lorean. I
now have my '82 insured with SF here in AZ, and pay less on it (as a daily
driver) than on my RX-7 for the same coverages (<$450 per 6 mos). They did
have to call the "home office" and get a ruling on the classification, but
with my trusty copies of Hemmings, De Lorean World, and the CPI book, they
realized it was not in the same "risk category" as the Lambo, Esprit Turbo,
etc.
Re: florida owners - A new DMC owner in Ft. Lauderdale is attempting to
start a DeLorean Owner's Association chapter in Florida. I expect there
will be more news on this in the next few months.

Subject: parting out my DMC
I have been pondering with the idea of parting out my DeLorean and selling
it for parts. But before I do, and before I make it official, who out there
is interested for some used parts in good condition? Included may be some
"hard to get parts" The price will be fairly judged between the quality of
the part and what it goes for today.
*IMPORTANT* this is only a survey and therefore, I may not do this. I'd
just like to get an idea of demand before I'm left with "half-a-DeLorean".
Also, does anyone know of anyone that has done this before, and what their
experiences has been?

I'm looking for a copy of the book described below, perhaps one of the UK
subscribers has seen or has a copy of this book?
The DeLorean Tapes - Published by THE SUNDAY TIMES INSIGHT, London
This is a soft cover book which is a compilation of all the FBI tapes made
during their attempt to set their hook in John Z. DeLorean. It's 164 pages
long and is just transcripts wth a few paragraphs interspersed to describe
the setting when each set of tapes were made.
