Subject: Some thoughts on rust ...

Even though the Delorean has a SS exterior does not mean that you should
not be concerned about rust. The frame is particularly vulnerable to
rust. Some owners report no problems, others indicate that they have
rust. Iíve even heard reports were vehicles stored had rust problems.

I am in the long process of repairing rust on my frame. I bought my car
from a previous owner who drove it year round in Minnesota. When I
bought the car little had been reported about frame rust problems. The
epoxy finish was supposed to protect the frame from rust problems. Boy
was I surprised when I started digging into the problem. The epoxy can
actually worsen the problem once the rust starts.

In a nutshell here is the problem ... ANYWHERE that the epoxy coating
cracks from stress, rock chips, wear and allows water to come in contact
with the underlying metal, rust will form. Once it starts it travels
under the epoxy finish eating away at the metal. Since the frame is
relatively light steel it does not take long for there to be significant
problems. The bad news is that the epoxy can look pretty good and you
can have significant problems with the steel.

I recommend that EVERYONE check their frames for rust very carefully and
often. Get the frame up high enough to be able to inspect the frame and
suspension parts. Anywhere there are slight signs of problems fix it and
simply coating the area with undercoating will not solve the problem.
Remove the loose epoxy, remove ALL rust and refinish as appropriate.

I hope to put together an article together for publication in the
Delorean Owners Association magazine that more fully details what I found
and how I repaired it. Will keep you informed.
