Chicago Land Residents~

I have recently joined the Midwest DeLorean Connection.
I am aware of the Tech. Session coming up, and plan to attend.
None the less, if ANYONE in the area could recommend a mechanic
that can replace my clutch, my car would greatly appreciate it.

See Ya'Around

My name is Josh. I'm an Art Director for an Advertising Agency in Mass.
Just like many of you, I became interested in the Delorean after BTTF 1,2
and 3. I bought my 81 DMC when I was 18 years old about 5 years ago. It's
Just used about 3 or 4 months out of the year as everyday transportation
(has about 18325 miles, bought it w/ 13400 on it). It's absolutely the best
thing I ever bought.

I have always liked and tried to be different, So what better car to have.
I also have a 75 Corvette Stingray, 69 Mustang Convertible (going through
restoration). I spend alot of time w/ my animals: 2 ferrets, 2 dogs, 1
horse, and I Play Bass in a ROCK Band to pay for alot of my exspensive
hobbies (Yes I have Long hair, I'm surprised a long haired guy like me
driving a Delorean has NEVER been pulled over!)

I Love MY Delorean, and wouldn't trade it for anything. But My life long
dream is to Get My Very Own Lamborghini Countach, Yes I vow it will happen.
But this is the wrong list for that. Any MASS or R.I. owners around drop me
a line.

NEXT..
See ya Josh (sim001(AT)ici.net)

Chris,

Thats the answer that I have been waiting for!!

My name is Ian and I have the same mechanical talent that you have. I
love to play with cars and anything mechanical. Right now I'm driving a
'63 VW bug and love to work on it. (It'll be restored by the end
of next summer) I'm a Junior in High School and I am planning to get a
DeLorean (5-speed gray) when I go to college. (No, I have no wonderful
great aunt that will pay for all of this. Just *my* drive to have my
dream car.) Well, like you were saying:

> I grew up in Carmel, CA, a very car oriented area.

I live in Menlo Park and love Carmel. Where do you live now?

Alright! No problems! Shows you care for your cars. Even with the turbo
installed, is the car really dependable?

So, would you recommend the DeLorean as a daily driver?? Through College?

WOW! I guess everyone has to have a hobby... How did you find that
streetsweeper?

Well, you know my question...

How much time and $$$ did you invest in the DeLorean before you felt
it was reliable? Can a college student, who will have a hard enough
time getting a DeLorean, be able to (cross your fingers) survive with
all the little problems that DeLoreans seem to have?

In fact, if you really feel generous, could you tell me your history
of living with a DeLorean?

Thanks,
Ian

Howdy everyone,
I have been blessed with yet another airconditioner leak. At the rate
I have been blowing freon into the atmosphere I will singlehandedly
be respnsible for a new hole in the ozone somewhere above Houston. As if
we didn't get enough sun down here. Anyway... the problem this time has
been diagnosed as the evaporator. Does anyone know what a cross-reference
is for this part? I know it's a Harrison Rad. part- but does anyone know
a more specific designation? I'm going to be pouring over picture books
of the things to find one that fits- I'll let y'all know if I find a part
which will work. Thanks in advance for any information.

Subject: Re: Daves Rear Axle whine

If the noise disappears during a hard left turn it's because the weight of
the car has transferred to the right side and the load on the left side of
the suspension has been lightened considerably. Two possibilities are the
rear hub bearing # 100973 contained in the rear hub carrier or, possibly, the
left rear tire. You could try switching the rear tires around to see if the
problem switches sides of the car for starters. If that proves futile, try
blocking the car up and removing the left rear wheel. See if you can listen
to the bearing area while turning the axle. A stethoscope is best but a long
handle screwdriver with the handle pressed to your ear and the blade as close
to the bearing area as possible will probably work. No dought you'll hear
some mechanical noises but a bad bearing will sound like it has gravel in it
or it may make a clicking sound because some of the balls are no longer
round. You may need to have a mechanic with an "ear" for this type of problem
to listen to it but I think the odds point to one of these two items.

Dear DeLorean Friends

I'm really happy to hear that there is such a strong affection towards the
car. I think that DeLorean owners in not so many words belong to a second
family, the DeLorean family.

I grew up in San Luis Obispo California, then my family moved to
Westlake Village California. I saw many Delorean's as a youngster there,
but I also knew that I wanted the
car. When I was in Santa
Maria California a woman showed me how the gullwings worked, and I just
knew that I had to have one... a Delorean, and a woman to show everyone how
the doors worked. (Bad Joke)

The Transfer

When my dad retired my mom deceided to move us out here to Washington D.C.
(I must saw that there are fewer D's here but the owners are just as
nice.) My mom works for the Department of Justice and that is how I really
got involved with the DeLorean Controversy. She was researching "sting
operations" and I picked up on the subject. Just like you Mikasa I took a
vow to tell the world (high school, college friends, whomever would
listen) about how a leading industrialist was set-up by the government,
and how "free-enterprise" is misleading.

College

I'm now a Senior here at the University of Maryland. I'm dedicated to the
study of Film, and how it changes peoples understanding of reality. It's
called Suspension of Disbelief. I've been researching the Delorean story,
and I know have a working screenplay. I'd like Ixtlan (Oliver Stone's
Co.) to take a look at it. "Tucker" meets "Wall Street" with "The Player".
With my project I've been able to meet with some "industry" people, and
I've also been able to speak with John Z. Delorean himself. He was a big
inspiration to me, he said to me "I have always been a person who
stood up for what ever I beleived in, and in today's contemporary society
that isn't always correct". I too stand up for what I believe in and I know
I can sell my pitch.
There were a couple of attempts to make a DeLorean Movie, but only
one was ever produced. It is titled "Monkey's/DeLorean Tapes" and it was
produced by Danny Boyle,"Shallow Grave" 1995. It was only released in the U.K.
I have the movie, with an interview of Greald Scotti, the former DEA agent who
testified on DeLorean's behalf at the end. In addition there were a couple of
"Miami Vice", "Leave it to Beaver the reunion" shows with the DeLorean.

While I'm talking about the Tucker, a very good friend of the family has 3
restored Tuckers at his house/museum. He invited DMC owners to come and
see, and he is now thinking of purchasing a D. The museum is all Tucker,
it is HUGE, and free. If you would like to see it just drop me a line.
One of his cars #22 was in the Tucker Movie.

My dad has now received the DeLorean Bug. He has deceided to purchase a
car too. He now has a deposit on a 1981 9,000 miles gray leather auto,
painted "Magnum P.I." red. It is owned by a family friend and no longer has
an interest. I'm looking for a Delorean similar to "The Last DeLorean
Ever Sold" 6000 VIN Number, 5-speed, Grey Leather.

I hope that everyone has a great story to share, and thanks for the time.

With Kind Regards
Michael R. Pack

P.S. I have a double major in Business.... just in case the film takes its
time. 8-)

I am a changed man.

This morning I witnessed a DeLorean miracle! And I don't
mean that I banged my head on the steering wheel and my
car started. I mead a genuine, bona fide miracle!

As I arrived at work this morning a blind man was walking
down the sidewalk outside the building where I park. I could
tell he was blind because he wore dark glasses and was
tapping his way down the sidewalk with a white cane (in Ohio
only blind people may carry white canes.

There were many cars turning the corner this morning, but it
was only when my DeLorean came around the corner that
this blind man suddenly stopped. He turned to face my
direction, and I swear he *watched* me pull into the
driveway!

The DMC 12:
sports car, time machine, and now healer of the blind!

Hi all,
It was suggested that I check the manual for instructions on
starting the D. Silly me DID find that the gas pedal needs to be depressed
a bit when turning the ignition. My D started just fine. Still a bit rough
until it warms up though. I didn't expect this from a fuel injected car.
Thanks!

Both of my rear bearings gave out at the same time two
months after I got my car. The gravel sound was very
obvious, exactly as Bruce describes. There was *never* a
period of whining, squeaking, whistling, or anything else.
The sound did change as I turned corners, but it was *never*
a whining sound.

After about 100 miles of the gravel sound (unfortunately I was
away on a long trip at the time) the rear end began to wobble
so badly that it became difficult to control the car. I was
afraid it would shake itself apart, but my wobbling DeLorean
held together somehow for another 100 miles, which got me
home safely. A year later a rear trailing arm bolt shear away.
Perhaps these problems were related?

Ian asked a bunch of questions:
>How much time and $$$ did you invest in the DeLorean
>before you felt it was reliable?

This question may be impossible to answer. I *felt* my
DeLorean was reliable the day I bought it. How could I know
the rear bearings would go out after two months? For the '96
Expo I just made a 1,600 mile trip in my DeLorean and I
think it is reliable now. But is it reliable enough to live away
from home for four years? I honestly don't know.

>Can a college student, who will have a hard enough time
>getting a DeLorean, be able to (cross your fingers) survive
>with all the little problems that DeLoreans seem to have?

I went through most of college with a car that was *much*
less reliable than my DeLorean. Of course, if I spent as
much money keeping that heap on the road as I do my
DeLorean, it probably would have been quite reliable.

CANDID THOUGHTS ON A DELOREAN AT COLLEGE:
For part of my undergraduate experience I was driving a
Datsun 280Z. I loved the car and so did my friends, but I
really missed having a back seat! A two-seater leaves plenty
of social limitations. It sounds stupid, but if I drove a seven
passenger minivan in college I would have been the most
popular guy on campus! My friends and I could have
travelled as one big, mini-van group instead of me (and an
occasional date) following behind in my two-seater sprotscar.

The DeLorean, with its super-high, super-wide center consol,
is the worst "make out" car in the world. A '57 Chevy is
much better for a young man's recreational needs . . .

The biggest problem for driving a DeLorean to college may be
parking. Will you be able to put it in a garage? The interior
will deteriorate if you expose it to much sunlight, and many
parts are becoming very rare and very expensive to replace.
A car cover is fine for home, but If you use one in a campus
parking lot you are begging for pranks.

In any event, you may have trouble working on the car in a
campus lot, so you will want to make sure there is a
mechanic in town who can repair it just in case. Hopefully
he will take credit cards. Sure, you may go four years
without a major repair, but don't risk too much on that
gamble! It sounds like Ian can probably change a water
pump or clutch himself, but those skills are useless if you
don't have a place to work!
