The scope of the DeLreoan Mailing List is as follows:

"Discussion of the DeLorean automobile, DeLorean Motor Company and John
Z. DeLorean"

Please make sure that your postings are at least somewhat related to
these topics. If you want to reposnd to something someone else has
written, and it's not directly DeLorean related, just email that person
directly, don't fill up the list with things that don't belong there.
Think before you post!

Additionally, please direct all postings for the list to:
dmcnews@world.std.com. Do not CC: any other "dmcnews" address as this
will only result in multiple postings. Everything sent to the "live"
dmcnews@world.std.com address automatically is forwarded to the digest

Sorry, James!!!

The computer staff at work inform me that our "reply-to" addresses
(the one you indicated) aren't working, nor will they be working for
some time.

My regular address is "henderlong@wusf.usf.edu", and it definitely
works! Just send the message directly there.

Again, sorry about the confusion!

Hi all,
Shouldn't the headlights set off the buzzer if the key is out of
the ignition? Mine don't! I don't want to have a drained battery someday!
I have the wire schematic for the car, but can anyone tell me what to look
for? Thanks.

Yes, there is an occasional apearance by the actor charactor of Tom
whatisface in the simpsons with a de lorean. I first noticed this when
watching an episode in a loby while walking out. A vehicle whose lines and
color were quite similar to DMC was driving down the road, being driven by a
drunk, striking every other car on each side of the road (Amazingly the only
car not taking damage was the DMC. Must be cartoon physics or lotus
enginearing. Naa, cartoon physics). I thought I was seeing things untill
there was a clear shot of the car being pulled over by an officer. When he
hit the cop in the head with the door I knew it was a DMC.

Subject: gas, pads, etc.

Attention all you California drivers out there!!! While watching the news
the other night, a story aired discussing California's new cleaner burning,
PC gasoline and guess what...to everybodys worst fears, the fuel is
completely wrotten. Besides poor performance (which everybody already knew),
the story talked about severe fuel line, pump, injection, and gas tank
problems this fuel causes. The deterioration of the fuel lines, the story
informed, was due to the presence of nitrile in the fuel line composition.
The gasoline can dissolve nitrile, leak through holes it has created, and
cause an engine fire (god forbid!!!). Fuel injection systems hate the stuff
and repairs averaging $1,200 have been known. If you replace your fuel
lines, they suggested getting lines that use fluroelastomurs (excuse the
spelling if wrong) instead of nitrile. By the way, despite several thorough
tests by independent organizations all confirming the danger that lies in
this gasoline, the state of California denies there is a problem.
On a similar topic, there's been some talk and debate in the past about which
fuel to use in the Delorean. If you look in the owner's manual, on one page
it recommends a very confusing 91 research octane/87 anti-knock index fuel
and on another page it lists 91 research octane. Some people on the list
have mentioned the use of regular unleaded in their car since the engine is
rather ordinary and not very high performance. However, I use supreme in my
DMC for several reasons. One reason is because the manual lists 91+ octane
twice and 87 only once. Also, in all of the automobile magazine road tests,
a 91+ octane reading is recommended. In addition, my dad's car runs on a
mandatory 91+ octane with a 9.0:1 compression ratio. The Delorean has a
8.8:1 compression ratio which strongly suggests the it too should run on a
mandatory 91+ octane reading.
For those of you with turbo chargers, a higher octane fuel is even more
important. As the air is compressed in the cylinder, it heats up. The more
air, the hotter it gets. Since more air is packed into the cylinder in a
turbo charged engine, it heats up faster and sooner in the cycle. A lower
octane fuel burns hotter than a higher octane fuel, which makes it easier to
ignite creating pre ignition and detonation therefore causing poor
performance and can be murder on pistons and valves. So, if you're driving
along in a turbo with regular unleaded and you notice performance problems,
all of which are cured once super unleaded is put in, there's a reason for
that.
In regard to a posting about suitable replcaement brake pads, I just bought
some myself. My first choice was repco pads because I've heard they stop
extremely well and produce much less brake dust than the original girling
pads. However they run around $90+ and are hard to come by. The girling
pads run around $60-70. Model #'s on both pads are D174 front and D97 rear.
I bought Rayloc pads from NAPA for $38. Their model #'s are S-797 front and
AS-7101 rear. I don't know how well they work yet, I'm going to put them in
next Friday. But NAPA parts usually are of very high quality. (By the way,
rear louvre struts #819-5518 for $19 each. They work great!)
Speaking of brakes, mine have a real wicked pulsation problem that I think is
a typical Delorean problem (not sure). The brake pedal pulsates, car
lurches, and steering wheel shakes when braking. The faster I am going when
braking begins, the worse the problem becomes, buffeting violently at freeway
speeds. I understand that because the brake disks are not cross-drilled to
allow heat to dissapate, the rotors have a tendency to warp. Next friday, I
am scheduled to have them inspected for this and possibly machined smooth.
Has anybody else had this problem too? What did you do to completely fix
it? I heard when Delorean brakes are working perfectly, they stop on a dime.
This is the way I want my brakes to be. I've also heard that Jaguar makes
suitable 10in and 10.5 in cross-drilled disk replacements for the Delorean.
If anybody can confirm this and has the part #, price, comments, etc., I
would really appreciate it.

Happy Motoring!

I went to pennsylvania a week ago and I went in a car museum it
had all sorts of cars. But the one car I was amazed with was there
delorean. The best one I have seen so far. It was an 82 with the
shiniest wheels you have ever seen on a delorean.(well what I have
seen). It only had 492 miles on it it was a beauty. My mom and i also
got in an argument the other day. She said you are not getting a
delorean. I asked why and she said because its old and it probably
won't run as good as a brand new truck. Is this true. Would a truck
run better than a delorean.

My friend said if you get a delorean I won't ride with you. He
said that they are the ugliest things he has ever seen. He saw a rusted
up dented in piece of crap and he said it was almost as ugly as a
delorean. I got really mad at him because he said He would not drive
one if it was the last car with the most powerful engine on the earth.
I want one so he won't ride with me. Is that a good Idea or bad one

Whether a truck runs better than a DeLorean depends on

1) The state the DMC is in when you buy it
2) How well you are with cars
3) Documentation on parts/etc.

BTW: Why is your mom telling you what to do? :)

Subject: The DeLorean

I am just writing in response to all the negativity that surrounds
the DeLorean. I have talked to just about everyone I meet about
how much I want a DMC. Most of them respond with a ( Hey thats the
Drugmobile HUH!!) some think they are the most troublesome car in the world.
Some think really highly of it, most respond referring to BTTF. I
KNOW the DeLorean is the most unique and beautiful car I have seen!
I had the opportunity to see my first DMC in Roanoke, VA. At a used car dealer
that I can't remember the name of, It was sitting in front of the building.
When I first saw it I was in a state of shock, I remember fumbling to
get my car door open. If a car wreck had happened beside me I would not
have looked away. I stood in awe for more than 1 hour looking around
the car and examining it. The doors were locked (Naturally) and I wanted
so bad to get inside. I talked to the car dealer and he said the car was
a local and that he had just replaced it's alternator or something like
that. I noticed that it had a DOA sticker on it so if it is anyone on this
list I would like to hear from you!
