Hi all,
This morning someone at work told me my lights were on inside the
car. Sure enough you can see through the molding that my interior front
yellow light is on when the car is closed, locked, and the key is out of
the ignition switch. Is this supposed to be this way or should I check
this problem out?

Subject: A/T Computer Governor
Hello everyone,
My name is Duke Bladorn and this is my first time posting. I am 25 =
years old and own a 81 DeLorean. I've had my little bundle of trouble =
for ten years now. (Yes I was a spoiled bratt at 15) I did have long =
hair but unfortunately had to cut it due to the fact I needed a job. =
(Hey I had to pay for my DeLorean parts somehow!) Since I have owned =
the car for such a long time, I did kind of modify a few things. I =
added ground effects to my already lowered D and now am just 2 1/2 =
inches off the ground! (oh what fun!) I have also added a rear wing and =
black out kit (it looks exactly like Harry Wards 'D that was pictured on =
the cover of an old DeLorean World Magazine; when I saw that issue the =
whole thought of being original went right out the window!!) not to =
mention a MASSIVE Alpine stereo system. (Let me bore you a bit more) I =
also have very awsome Alpine alarm system hooked up to my car phone. It =
has really neat features such as being able to start the car or let down =
the windows from another location. (Comes in handy on those cold =
mornings!!) Ok now that I've bragged about my D' here' s my problem for =
this week:
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the A/T computer governor? My =
mechanics ( if you can call them that ) put on my new computer and one =
of the zip ties broke holding it away from the exhaust. The computer =
still works if you shift it manually. (yea thats what I want to do!!) =
Also does anyone know who makes the 2 chips that are in the computer =
governor?? There is a guy who works with me and he is a electrical =
genius and he has offered to TRY and maybe modify a better computer =
governor or bypass it all together. Any help would be GREATLY =
appreciated. =20

There are two "most common" causes of a failed speedometer:
1) Failed angle drive
2) Failed speedo cable
The angle drive should be re-lubricated at each oil change
(this is documented in one of the service bulletins released
after the first rash of failures), and doing so ensures a
reasonably long life on it. Failing to lubricate the angle
drive generally causes it to fail after 15,0000 to 20,000
miles. I am not aware of any long terms repairs that have
been successfully applied to the angle drive, so should this
be the culprit the unit needs replacing.
The lower speedo cable also has some failure tendency (mine
failed just a thousand miles ago). Again the remedy is
replacement. For lower speedo cable replacement I recommend
the teflon-lined replacement speedo cable with a braided
stainless steel shield that Specialty Automotive sells -- it
is far superior to the original.
You can easily tell if the lower cable is broken. Disconnect
the lower cable from the angle drive and inspect the drive
end that sticks out the end of the cable. If the cable is
broken, then if you pull on the drive end you will pull the
broken end of the cable out, and if it is not broken, then
you won't be able to pull it out as it is fastened in the
far end.
I'm not sure how to ascertain a broken angle drive, but you
might know it when you see it.

This is a simple message requesting any help that you can give in order
that I may own the first Delorean in Australia. I'm currently searching
for a Right Hand Drive Delorean, any year model, any transmission.
As far as I can guess, they are available in England?
Obviously the better the condition, the happier I'll be, since not many
down under will know how to fix it.
I'm simply smitten by the car, and again would appreciate any help.
Also, any models, posters toys etc that I could try to find here?
Thanks heaps

I believe the problem you describe is with the door marker
lights, not the interior lights. Am I right? These should be
*off* when the door is closed. The lights on the driver's and
passenger's side are controlled by independent switches on
the two doors. IF YOU LEAVE THIS FOR A DAY OR TWO
IT WILL DRAIN YOUR BATTERY!
Is your problem on the driver's side, the passenger's side, or
both?
If it is the passenger side I may know the cure, although I am
still baffeled trying to figure out the cause. Let me know if
you think I can help.

Mike,
You're correct, they're called the door marker lights. It's
raining like nuts here so I can't really get at the passenger side door,
but it only seems to be happening on the driver's side. I pushed the door
in a bit and the light went out (whew!).
Now, I have a related problem. The switches on the driver's side
that determine if the door is closed sometimes don't get pressed in all
the way. They're two little protrusions just next to the air vent. Are the
marker lights hooked up to these protrusions? If so, then the problem
might be easier to fix than I thought. I can't check this until I get
home, but are the marker lights only switched on/off by these door switch
protrusions, or is there a mechanism inside the door itself that I need to
worry about? The door light/buzzer sometimes turns on while driving.
Thanks!

I am looking to upgrade my speakers and radio as a project over the winter. I
own a late 1982 with the ASI radio. Everything still works great but I am
sure an aftermarket set-up might be nicer. I would like to hear about the
set-ups others have put in as well as how tough of a project this might be.
Specific name brands of speakers and radios would be helpful. Hopefully this
topic can generate a good discussion.

You have *two* switches on the driver's door? I thought your
serial number was supposed to have just one . . .
Each switch button should have a rubber extension sleeve on
it. These greatly extend the length of the switch, yet they
flex to keep the lights off if the door jiggles a bit as ther car
bounces down the road. If you don't have these sleeves, you
can make them out of a small rummer hose. Instructions
should be in the DML archives for July or August.

Not only do I have two switches for the door (one for the light, one for
the buzzer), but I believe that on the DML it was stated that my SN should
not have the "DeLorean" tag on the front hood, but it does.

I'm having a Panasonic CD player installed on Monday. The tech

According to an article entitled "Back to the Future" by Jeff
Brown in the magazine Modern Motor published December,
1985, there were already two DeLoreans in Australia at that
time. You might find the old magazine in a library, or you
can order "The DeLorean 1977-1993" from the DOA or any
source you choose. A reprint of the article is on pp. 89-91 of
that book.
The DeLorean featured in the magazine was to be given away
in a contest by Pepsi. The photographs clearly show a car
that is right-hand-drive. Mr. Brown tells a wonderful story of
the attention the silver car drew as they drove through the
Australian streets and at Oran Park.

Since you have to use a two shaft radio your choices are limited (unless
you want to cut the steel panel to accomodate a din radio. Alpine makes
an excellent two shaft model ... the Crutchfield catalog has an
excellent selection of radios and even better tech support. Be careful
of the center AC duct since you can accidentally disconnect it. The
front speakers can be changed with any good 3 1/2 " speaker but it's a
real job, as for the rear speakers don't even think about it. With the
engine right behind your head don't waste excessive funds because you
can hear it anyway.

DeLorean Cadillac has (had) a little nameplate that read "By Delorean". It
was placed by the Cadillac (or Buick, etc.) nameplate on the back of the
car. I always thought it would be kinda neat to see a DMC-12 with a "By
DeLorean" dealer promo tag next to the "DeLorean" on the bumper:
DeLorean by DeLorean!

3 1/2" speakers up front are just about the best investment you can make -
those in the car are really cheap - hold one old one in one hand and a new
one in the other and feel the weight difference - as for rear, I agree
with Marvin - however, if you are not a purist, a set of Boston Acoutics
with crossovers can be mounted very nicely into the removable bulkhead at
the rear of the passenger compartment and you WILL hear them - there is
plenty of room and the installation looks very nice with the wire grills.
I'm running a Panasonic tape deck in the dash and a 6 disc changer right
behind the console (allows for more easy changing of disc cassettes than if
it were in the trunk). Good luck.

Very true, I was at Universal a few years ago and got to see the BTTF DeLorean
you are talking about. It sits right next to the car from Blade Runner and
some
other thing. The poor car looks sad, it is left there to face the elements
and when

for the

blows out steam/smoke) The used extinguishers for the effect. To bad, I
would LOVE to
have one of those. (Spoken by a 17 year old who isn't doing his homework
