While visiting Macioci Garage, in Lancaster, Ohio, I noticed a silver
beauty quietly resting with other junked cars behind the garage. Come to
find out, the car has license plates that expired in May of '94 and a
mechanic who has worked there at least 2 years mentioned to me it has
never left the yard. If anyone is looking for a fixer upper, you might
put in an offer to the owner. The garage telephone number is (614)
654-1451. It's a sad shame to see it sit and rot.

Frame rust - yes, an engineering problem. However, once you are made
aware
of it, the preventative fixes are relatively easy and inexpensive.
Windows - yes, they are unique and there have been some problems. However,
in 15 years of D ownership and over 100,000 miles of driving, I have never
had one come off the track or refuse to operate.
Bad relays/circuits - early on, yes. Anyone who still is experiencing bad
realys/circuits has probably never replaced the orignals with the updates.
Again, I've never had a problem.
Tailights - the fix has been pulished many times ans cost less than $10
and
then it's over forever.
Untrackable noises - there is no such thing. If you have a noise you can
track it.
This is not an unreliable car. It has it's quirks because JZD and DMC
didn't have enough model years (one, actually) to get real life, real time
feedback.
Will you spend more maintaining it for 15 years and 100,000 miles than a
Corolla or Celica --perhaps -- even probably. The difference is probably
not as much as you might think and the difference in the joy of ownership
is immeasureable.
I'm a happy D owner!

I'm certainly not going to argue about the style and uniqueness of the
DeLorean ... That's the primary reason I'm on this list (the others
being that as far as very unique sports cars it's one of the more
affordable ones). Hondas are up there for tops in reliability,
quality, efficiency, features and luxury for the money, but I have
never had any interest in them.
If owning a D equates to a hobby, that's perfectly fine. I'm just
trying to get an honest answer to the question of reliability and
amount of time and money required for maintenance. People who say (no
personal offense intended!) that "any 15 year old car requires
maintenance" don't seem to be quite answering the question.
As a person with no other cars, but dozens and dozens of hobbies
already, I have to be realistic in my choice of a car. Style has it's
value; but so does reliability. Unfortunately :) I have to take both
into account.
I know my question has no numeric answer, so all I really hope to do
is spark some discussion on the topic. Sacha, I appreciate your
feedback. Thanks!

As I have been moving the past week and a half, I am finding things I
forgot I had, or knew I had and forgot where I put them. The most recent
example is the Motor Trend and Car & Driver comparsion tests featuring
the DeLorean.
Car and Driver tested the DMC against a 308GTS, a Corvette, a Maserati
Merak and a 280ZX Turbo. Does anyone have a copy of CPI to comapte their
relative worth now as opposed to their cost when new?
Motor Trend did a simialr test, but I think they used a Mondial, Esprit,
Corvette and the DeLorean. Anyone, anyone?

This car is not abandoned and the owner is not selling. He was rather
upset that people are calling. PLEASE disregard the message that was
sent out earlier. The car is currently waiting for parts and has new
plates already to be put on.

Dear DML,
I just shelled out the money for brand new black leather seat covers
this week. I bought them from P.J. Grady but the only thing is, is that
he doesn't sell the hog rings or the pliers. Well being the do it
yourselfer I am, I looked around on the web and found this place that
sells the hog rings and the plier oh and has this neet little page
showing your all the steps in recovering an auto seat. Here is the URL

I hope maybe this will come in handy for people. I also have a favor to
ask of all of you. If anybody has recovered their seats and has some
quick little handy information I should know about please send me an
email or send it to the master DML. Thank you fellow DMLers

Subject: DML: ALTENATOR OR BATTERY?
I have a similiar problem to one mentioned a couple of days ago.
The altenator has recently start to put out anywhere from 3 or so
volts to maybe 10 max. Can't keep the battery charged and it also
drains rapidly when I use it after charging it. Before I strip
the altenator out of the car to have it checked out does anyone
think that this may be just an old worn out battery problem?
Motorola altenator with 20,000 miles; battery approx 5 yrs old.

Subject: DML: Comments on Deloreans on this list...
Hello,
I am not *yet* a proud Delorean owner, but I would like
to just add two thoughts to the thread about the reliability of
Deloreans and the frequency of messages on this list.
First, I do currently own a '92 VW Corrado and subscribe to
that list as well. About 70% of the messages posted
are about _problems_ people have with their vedubs,
and the rest are just useless banter and specification
comparisons. I agree that the sense is skewed towards
problems rather than people who have no or little problems
with their cars. Unless we ask everyone to post a
weekly "Nope, no problems this week" type messages,
it will continue to give people the wrong idea (not
just this list, but all auto related mailing lists.)
Second, concerning the maintenance of older cars
(like Deloreans, etc)... If we maintained our cars
as well as airlines maintained their airplane fleets,
cars would last almost forever! So, the "staying
power" of a D is directly proportionate to the level
of long term maintenance applied to the car (or any car
for that matter).
Third, I am still looking for a D owner in the general
Boston area that I could talk to about seeing their car
and discussing the trials and tribulations of ownership.
Thanks,
- Hank (henry@ix.netcom.com)

Obviously, the people who own Deloreans don't consider them more trouble
than they are worth, or they wouldn't own them.
Jeff, trouble and value are items that only you can weigh. What is it
worth to YOU? If you do want to own a Delorean, you can go cheap, with
a project car that you may be able to drive in a month or so, and have
restored in a year or less, or you may go with a complete overhaul that
you can drive out today to any place in the country without worry, your
choice. The old story is the price of the ticket.
Some people have made money by buying and holding cars. I don't know of
anyone who has made money, inflation considered, on an everyday driver.
If cars were a good investment, you would see Automobile Mutual Funds,
Automobile Futures, and car ads in the business section of your local
paper.

Good grief, lighten up. And speaking of lights, a Yugo behind you at
night wouldn't blind you via the mirrors.
Might be interesting to get a look at the drive line. Wonder how he

Great News! Today I was at my girlfriend's house, and she mentioned that
on her way home from school, she swore she saw one with its doors open at
Autowerks, a Volvo/ Volkswagen repair specialist. Sure enough, on my way
home, I looked over, and there it was. I pulled up at the Shoney's
located next door, and stared in awe through the fence. I haven't seen
one since I lived in California. It was a good day. This one looked
pretty stock, except for the aftermarket dual exhaust. If anyone owns
this, please reply. I'm going back tommorrow during business hours to
check it out, and get a VIN for James. Ta-Ta For Now!

My bet would be the alternator.
The Motorola alternator has a built in regulator which may be your
problem. The regulator controls the input current to maintain the
output voltage at 14 volts at any current draw up to the 90 amp limit of
the alternator. A burned out diode or two would still put out 12.5
volts or so at a low load (car and fuel pump running with lights and
fans off) if the regulator was good. A shorted diode will drain the
battery in a few hours and prevent you from charging the battery unless
you disconnect it.
Almost any of the larger parts stores can check the alternator of you
remove it from the car and take it into the store. An alternator-starter
overhaul shop may be able to get the replacement parts, but I doubt of
your local parts store would carry them. Of course there is always the
connection problem, are they all clean and tight from the aternator to
the battery, including grounds, or would it be earths?
If your battery is over three years old it could be a question, but
since you say that it still takes a good charge it most likely is not
the problem. It would have to be completely shorted to get the voltages
that you mentioned.
Good luck,
Jim #6884
