Will there be a swap meet during this event? Will there be any autos for
sale? Just curious. I live about 15 min away and will definitely be
going.

There is TONS of construction going on here in Columbus, be sure to
consult
AAA or some other authority on travel about possible detours and delays.
Lots of orange barrels out there. If you need directions to a particular
Columbus location, email me and I will try and help.

Has anyone ever used a product called SHEILA SHINE? It's a stainless
steel
polish... and I was wondering if it could be used on DeLoreans.

If this product (or any other stainless steel polish) has been used
successfully, please let me know. Also, please let me know where the
product
can be purchased.

Dear Fellow DeLorean Lovers,

On September 7, I was driving in Baldwin, New York when I went
past
a Friendlys and saw a 1981 DeLorean. I almost cried at the sight I saw.
The
grill was on the ground and someone tried to break into the car, because
the
hood was bent up as if someone wanted to see what was in the trunk. The
glass is cracked in 2 places and the interior is all messed up. If
anyone on
this list knows who the owner is please contact me at NJP548(AT)aol.com. The
VIN # is 001805. I would love to buy this car and make it original
because
this car has been abused and I can't stand to see anything else go wrong
with it. I saw a kid nearby and he said that the car was there for about
a
year, then today I called up P.J. Grady and they said that the person who
owned the car has moved so I can't find the owner of the car for me to buy
it, If there is anyone out there that could help me please e-mail me
anything
would be greatly appreciated.

                  Thank you,

                         Nick

P.S. James, this car is a 5speed and has Grey interior and as I said
before
the VIN# 001805.

I've had this problem since I bought the car but haven't looked into the
details yet. Perhaps someone has had the same synptoms and has the
solved it.

Each time the A/C compressor and/or fans shut off, it causes a voltage
spike in the electrical system and the tach jumps 500 RPM or so,
sometimes more, sometimes less. It is more noticable at night since it
causes a flicker in all the lights too. I'm sure that Lucas put bypass
diodes in the system but haven't checked the schematic yet.

I plan to get into this next week but thought someone may have the
solution at hand.

Ace,

Call the police and tell them. They can track the owner via the vin #.

It could possibly be towed by the police to a junkyard as "abandoned" and
then you buy it from the junkyard.

It may get a salvage title though...

If you have a friend that is on the local police dept. it shouldn't
be to difficult to track the owner. Sometimes the DMV can be of help
too. If you want to take the time you could have the owner of the
property report the car as abandoned, the police will impound it and
then you could buy it when it comes to auction.

It's a pretty good product but leaves a kind of "oil on water" look.
There are others that are better IMO. Most can be found at your local

Subject: DML: HELP! Stalling problem

Over the last couple of days I have been experiencing an intermittent =
stalling problem but today when I drove it at lunch the problem finally =
got to be pretty consistent. I have not had enough time to look through =
the shop manuals to see if I could find anything and the DMCNews search =
engine is down. I use this car as my daily driver so I am desperate for =
possible causes and answers. I would appreciate any help in solving =
this problem.

Symptoms: Light acceleration (and a lot of clutch slipping) will allow =
the car to accelerate and run as normal. Normal to heavy acceleration =
will result in the engine stalling for a half second, run for a half =
second, stall, run, etc. This assumes that I keep the accelerator =
applied as when this started happening I would push in the clutch and =
let of the accelerator. Generally if I let off the accelerator the =
engine would return to idle just fine. The car does idle just fine and =
I can even push the accelerator and rev the engine without a problem as =
long as I am not trying to move the car. It only fails when I am =
releasing the clutch and moving. Strangely enough it also appears to =
only do it if I am accelerating forward as I have put the car in reverse =
and nothing abnormal happened when accelerating backwards (this not a =
tested symptom but I noticed I did not have to fight the car the few =
times I went into reverse). When it does stall it is a complete engine =
stall vs. one or two cylinders as if I had a tank of bad gas. To me the =
curious part is the 1/2 second stall, 1/2 second run as it is a =
consistent time even between engine starts and gears.

Subject: DML: Stainless Frame Site

Just last night I finished catching up on the last three months of the
mailing list. It seems like lots of things have been happening, with
threatening letters from the DOA and all. As some of you may have seen,
the latest issue of DeLorean World has an article I wrote about the
process of designing and building a DeLorean with a Stainless Steel frame.

For anyone interested in this option for your car, I have just put part
of a web site together with information about the frame for you to look
at. The URL is:

http://www.pearce-design.com

The name of the product is PermaFrame. My DeLorean has been running on
this frame for over 40k miles and three Chicago winters. As you can
imagine, no rust. Several people told me that a Stainless Frame could
not be used for a car because of the nature of Stainless Steel. The
trick is to take the limits of Stainless Steel into consideration when
working with it regarding bends and angles.

Pricing information and availability is listed on the site. Since this
is a rather unique product, I am trying to group orders together to
reduce the selling price by having some volume as opposed to doing frames
one at a time.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the frame or, if you
live near the West suburbs of Chicago and would like to examine the car.

I currently use "Stainless Steel Magic" for my DeLorean am very pleased
with the results. I purchase mine from Lowes. It is in a stainless steel
looking can with a yellow lid (same kind of can that spray paint is in)
You can also purchase SS Cleaner from DMC Houston (1-800-USA-DMC1).....I
can't remember the name of the product, but it and SS Magic both seem to
do
about the same job. I use the cleaner on the Stainless Steel as well as
the louvers and trim. It works great!

That is really cool and an incredible acheivement. Congratulations!
Were I but an owner ... :)

Don't please don't take offense, but I am curious why you chose
stainless steel, as opposed to something more exotic (aluminum being
the first thing that comes to mind, magnesium and titanium following).

Did you deem it impossible to redesign the frame to allow for the the
inherent lesser tensile strengths and moduli (?) of elasticity? Did
you consider other metals, and how much?

(OK, maybe titanium was being silly. That would be rather
expensive. :) Oh, but hey, if you ever really feel like splurging,
make yourself some aluminum-berylium alloy. Heheh... :)

Sounds like a fuel problem, collapsed pickup line (usually caused by a
clogged pickup strainer in the bottom of the tank), bad fuel pump, or a
plugged fuel filter. At least that's where I would start.

Shortly after I bought my Delolrean about four years ago it developed
typical fuel starvation-collapsed fuel line symptoms. New injectors and
lines had been installed before I bought the car, (previous owner
probably had the same problem).

The only suction line is the large (aprox. 3/4" ID) line from the fuel
pump to the pickup filter in the bottom of the tank. The line was very
flexible but not soft, and the filter was covered with a red substance
that appeared to be rust. Solvents, including carb cleaner MEK and
acetone, would not touch the red material. I finally tried soap and
water and the filter looked like new in a few minutes. Wiping the
inside of the tank with a white rag showed no residue.

I suspect the red material was bacteria or fungus. The car had been
stored for three years before I bought it. I know that these animals
grow in jet fuel but didn't realize that they would grow in gasoline.

It probably wasn't necessary, with a clean filter, but I slipped an
expanded spring inside the straight section of the pickup line so that
itcan't collapse now.

Bryan's stainless frame site is still under construction, but the page
describing the frame itself is up and it is very interesting. I love the
idea
of a stainless frame and in ten years or so I will proably get one.

A lot of the people who see my car at car shows assume all DeLoreans
have a stainless frame already. I am sorry to disappoint them. We are
lucky to have Bryan work on this project, a lot of other marques don't
have that kind of support. Too bad it's not possible to develop the ERM
polymer frame that was originally intended for the DeLorean!

Titanium is very strong, lightweight, and corrosion resistant . . .
however
as I recall it is much more brittle than stainless. Not much deformation
to
absorb energy in a crash there!

Still, wouldn't titanium BODY PANELS be great to have? Such panels
would be very difficult to fabricate, but if you had them you would have
a very tough and beautiful car body. Didn't the former Soviet Union have
so much titanium that they made toilet seats out of it? I wonder what
they are doing with all that titanium today? If there are any rich
Russians
lurking on the DML, consider making me some titanium fenders, please!

Actually, I like it. It's the best looking 4x4 I've ever seen, and I

Has anyone ever seen this car in person? Is it possible that this picture

I'm no expert, but i am an avid Photoshop user. Yes that could have
been done as a gag, and if it were a gag someone went though alot of
work. The angles of the car and bottom are basically perfect. It would
also be alot of work to show the bumber bars under the D where the tires

From: "Kemp, Nick (MN10)"
Subject: DML: A variety of thoughts ....

I am close to finishing the restoration my D. What started as a radiator
replacement resulted in a total tear down. While I was working on the
radiator I notices frame rust and developed a case of the "miswells".
Some
thoughts ...

Rust:
 - I encourage everyone to get under their car(remember: safety first)
and
check for rust regardless of use, care or location. Any crack, chip or
wear
point is an opportunity for water to get under the epoxy and eat away the
steel. Be forewarned, appearance can be deceiving. There were areas on
the
car where the epoxy looked pretty good and only a slight indication that
there was rust underneath. Turns out that was all there was ... RUST.
If
you suspect an area, poke at it with a screwdriver. If there is a
problem
you'll need to repair it anyway. BTW ... the center section looked as
good
as the day it was built.

 - Look at the training arms, under the engine crossover, the frame
adjacent
the training arms, the shock towers, inside the box construction either
side
of the engine, the gas tank plate, anywhere a bolt penetrates the frame
and
anywhere else that the finish is stressed, cracked, wears or can be hit
by
rocks.

 - I sandblasted the frame (very hard to get the good epoxy finish off
the
frame), replaced the bad sections(used SS under the engine crossover),
had
the frame Zinc-Chromated, and powdercoated. The first coat of powder
coat
should be a zinc rich primer coat followed by the finished grey color
coat.
Powder coat is a great finish that is superior to any other finish.

 - I then used rust proofing material in those areas where there were
enclosed chambers in the frame.

Ground Effects:
 - Since the Delorean is almost identical to the Lotus Esprit, those
looking
for side spoilers may be able to get Esprit components to work. For that
matter, I read somewhere that the Delorean suspension was implemented
starting with 83 Esprits. Any opportunity for cross-referenced parts?

High Idle:
 - Idles of 2000 - 2500 RPM can be caused by not having the thermal
switch
and thermistor connected under the intake manifold. You can reconnect
the
thermal switch(green wires) without removing the intake manifold. My
arms
can't make enough bends to reach the thermistor(Black sheathed wire).

Fuel System problems, possibly caused by insufficient use:
 - After reassembly, the engine started and shortly degraded to running
only
on the cold injector while cranking. Turns out I was not getting fuel to
the injectors. I once heard that service stations clean injectors by
connecting the fuel system directly to pure injector fluid. The car will
run a little rough, but it does run. So I poured a container of
Chevron's
(HIGHLY recommended) injector cleaner into the tank with about 3 gallons
of
gas. I bypassed the fuel pump relay to circulate the fluid completely
through the system and let it sit overnight. Next morning it started
with
only minor grumbles and has started fine since then.

Nuts and Bolts:
 - I suggest that all exposed nuts and bolts be separated and reconnected
periodically with a coating of good grease. If they get a chance to rust
until they cannot be separated, you run the risk of breaking them off if
you
need to service the car. Penetrating oil may help( remember: time is
important relative to the effectiveness of penetrating oil). There are a
lot of small bolts that break easily. A lot of them have their heads
imbedded in the fascia material or the fiberglass and replacement is
DIFFICULT or IMPOSSIBLE.

I have a thousand other observations from the restoration process. All
said
and done the car is a pleasure to work on. More later.

NOTE: These are my opinions and I am subject to being wrong without
notice.

That's a good one!

I hadn't thought of that! Maybe a six-foot long leather pull-strap?

I think it's legit. At one of the past expos (Las Vegas in 1995, I
think), Stephen Wynne was passing around a fax showing a photo of this
same vehicle (I can't imagine that there are two of them in existence!).
Stephen said one morning he came in and the fax was on his machine with
no other information - he wanted to know more about it, too.

Where is Round Rock, Texas? We have several list members from various
parts of Texas, I'd like to know more about it, the driveline in
particular...$10K would be cheap and for an even bigger head-turner...

Subject: DML: SF Bay: Need DeLorean for 1 day shoot: $500

Attention San Francisco Bay Area DeLorean owners:

Our production company, Fat Box, Inc. needs to rent a DeLorean on the
27th of this month for an all day studio shoot in Mountain View, CA.
The car must be in excellent condition and unpainted. Black
interior preferred.

We will not be needing to drive the car anywhere, except across the studio
floor.

We will pay $500 for the use of the car the entire day of Saturday.
You may remain present or if you need to be elsewhere you can leave the
car with us in the morning and pick it up in the late afternoon.

So if you want to have some fun, make some cash and have your car in a
video, email harlock(AT)raindrop.com, privately, off the list. I will
probably ignore replies sent to the mailing list.

Thanks.
