I almost threw-up when I saw it, but hey, it's a head turner. The car is

I live in south Austin, and the 4X4 was at a lot for sale right by my

Could you possibly have a brake caliper stuck? You say the engine revs
freely in neutral and only stumbles when in gear and attempting to
accelerate. That would indicate a running gear problem and a stuck brake
caliper would seem to be the first place to look. Many times brakes don't
hold as well in reverse. Just a thought.

Well, you succeded in getting out a general SOS. If your D is stock
the tanks are plastic. Something probably broke. I built brass tanks
and hose connections for my other one but not for my current. Most of
the good shops, P.J. Grady/ DMC Huston, sell metal radiators. Gte
under the car and check, maybe a hose just gave out!

Hey Joe, the Header bottle on the right side of the engine sends the
coolant to the radiator on the right side of the car (passenger)and out
the left (driver). It's hard to say if you damaged the radiator itself
even with your car lowered. If you did, the only part I believe you
could have damaged is the plastic neck that one end of the hose attaches
to on the right side (input) of the radiator. You also could have
stripped one of the hose clamps off. One quick way to check is to turn
your front wheels to the right as far as they'll go and look behind the
spoiler where the coolant hose attaches to the radiator to see if it
came off. If you still can't find the leak, pour a quart of antifreeze
in the header bottle and you'll be able to easily tell where it is.
Good Luck

This is further to the "bumby ride at speed" thread:
I pretty much agree with Marv Sterling that the first thing I would check
is alignment. Both my current and previous D actually hungered to get up
to 80 mph (3000 rpm). Not only did the engine just seem to settle into a
groove, but the car was rock steady. I have always had "stock" front
shocks; but I have had 3 different suspension heights - stock, lowered ala
Don Steger and now, Euro springs. In all cases, the ride at speed was
impeccable.
Oh, because someone is sure to ask which suspension I prefer - its the
Euro
spring approach. It lowers the front end a bit without having to worry
about curb hitting (ala Mr. Napoli), speed bumps, etc. Either lowered
approach will actually improve handling.

Considering that the body panels are all made out of Stainless, we
decided early on that it would be great if the frame could be Stainless.
This is the material most often associated with the car anyway.
Additionally, most people don't realize that the original frame of the
DeLorean is not Stainless.
>Did you deem it impossible to redesign the frame to allow for the the

This was of course, the main concern. The frame overall is stronger than
the original and only 10 pounds heavier. We were surprised that the
weight only increased by 10 pounds. Some of the weight may be saved on
the new frame by not coating it with anything.
>(OK, maybe titanium was being silly. That would be rather

Stainless actually provided a good balance of cost vs. workability.

On one trip I got 28.5 MPG on the highway with my DeLorean. This was
100% highway driving, at 65 MPH, with no luggage rack and very little
cargo.
In city driving it runs from 15-25, depending on how bad the traffic is.
As a city dweller, I can remember some traffic jams where I burned a
gallon and went zero miles.
I once asked my mechanic if this could be improved. To humor me he
turned my idle down to about 600 RPMS. My city mileage would have
been fantastic, except my engine kept stalling!

Voltage spikes was a problem for me as well, VIN 5581. The cure was

1) Install a big diode at the compressor to prevent the "kickback" of

2) Install a small diode at the digital clock, to prevent the digital
clock from resetting.
3) Install the FanZilla module from Rob Grady to prevent "kickback" and

Subject: DML: starting problems?
Dear DML,
I KNOW I KNOW another (AT)#$# starting question... Well this problem
has been with me ever since I got my car. It is just like the scene
from Back To The Future when McFly turns the key to start the car and it
just clicks... My car clicks and clicks and if I click a few times
really fast it starts... there is no rrrrrr (engine turning over)
noise. I looked to see if that upgrade was done on my electrical system
(the recall that gets rid of that low voltage anti start mechanism)
That is okay. I feel that my engine is in the compression stage and the
starter just can't turn it over. If I run it through the gears a few
times (5 speed) without the clutch and turn the key it starts. Or if I
put it in gear and push the car a little... it usually starts. Do you
think it is my starter??? When the car is warm it always starts...
Maybe cuz the engine is well lubricated in this state and the piston
actually slides down away from the compression. I would appreciate any
kind of help. Thank You...
Oh I forgot. My alternator died a while back so I modified the brackets
for an AC-DELCO type alternator. It works great but the pulley is a bit
too large. So it doesn't charge at idle. What do you guys think?
Where do I find a better size pulley. Oh and does anybody know off hand
what wire goes where on the new alternator (pin 1 and pin 2) what color
wire goes to which one? If I put them in the wrong pins what will
happen?

mount this thing (the dia is the most important). The unit quit because of
the natural rubber pick up hose and boot and falling apart after 15 years
of gas exposure. These items should be replaced, the $300 price tag on
the
new fuel tank rubber kit has stopped me as of yet. I have seen talk of
people making new pick up hoses out of the same material as the fuel tank,
but have no heard anything about the boot priced with in reason. If you
hear anything on rubber please let me know.

Derek,
I am a daily driver of a 100% original mint condition DMC used on a combo
of city and freeway (75+) driving.
We get 18 to 24 in the city with the usual stop and go and 22 to 38 on
the
open road in 5th gear at 75+.
I use an amway gas aditive that helps to keep the injectors clean, plus I
use a very fine strainer in the fill neck to ensure no crap in the
gasoline. The care is tuned once a month, Plugs timing and air mixture,
repl Fule filter, Engine oil flush and refill w/new filter as well. Oil is
flat clean with no trace of carbon deposits or sludge what ever. I ad one
pint of good ol'e STP oil treatment with each oil change. All collent
lines
are new with all aluminimum pipes and wtr. pump cleand and brushed. all
wiring harneses and eletrical connections checked and keept clean and
coated with high temp greas.
new air filter once a month.
You may think that good gas milage is sort of an isolated measure of the
cars value, but there is a lot that impacts gasoline consumption, which I
have noted above. You would be surprised how just a little over heating,
or
dirty oil can effect the milage. a cloggy airfilter is a disaster.

Subject: DML: turn signals
Today's problem deals with the turn signals: They don't work all of the =
time. They particularly like to cease functioning when I really need =
them to work (like when a cop is behind me). Through experimentation, I =
found that I can usually do the following to get them to work:
1) Give the car a solid cursing
2) Move around the wiring that is located directly under the steering =
column (sometimes works)
3) Punch the rear facia near the turn light
Do I have a problem in the tail light board, have a short in a wire, or =
just have bad luck in general? It might help to know that this problem =
started after I replaced the dash board and I already checked the =
connection of the wiring to the instrument cluster in the binnacle.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Subject: DML: gray dash board
At the beginning of the summer, I bought a black dash board that was =
painted gray from PJ Grady. I understand that this is cheaper than =
buying an actual gray one and that all of the gray ones left are =
defective. The painted dash board came in and I installed it in my De =
Lorean. Besides being a PAIN to install, the gray paint easily =
scratched and came off, exposing a bold BLACK color....I got a new =
painted dash in several weeks ago and it seemed much better. The =
install caused no noticeable marks, but I like to use a sun shield in my =
car in an effort to protect the interior. I carefully put the shield in =
the window, but I still notice some marks where it has stripped the gray =
paint!!! Does anyone else have this dash board? Are all of them this =
sensitive? I'm slightly irritated and will never use the sun shield =
again...
