I have located in Dallas #4577. Actually I've known about it for about a
year and had just never returned to the area of town where its located to
get the vin and owner info. Anyhow, the car is an automatic with a gray
interior which is presently undergoing decay. It has not been moved more
than twenty feet form its present location in the past 8-10 years. The
fuel system has been disassembled, the wiring has been pulled apart yet
the odometer indicates 176 miles total. (This seems really low, but the
gauges aren't necessarily working. On the other hand , the tires are
orig. with little wear). The body has been damaged from activities
around the car. There's a small dent in the fender and brown paint
splattered on the driver's side. Interior is good except for the sagging
headliner. The frame looks good, only a few chips in the epoxy. (On the
other hand I didn't look that closely or get right under the car).
The car is parked under a carport near a "shade-tree" mechanic and a
plumber's shop. The plumber own's it and it is NOT for sale. (Say's he
plan's on doing something with it in his retirement). Anyhow, this info
is just for the record.
P.S. I also know of another D in South Dallas stored under a building.
Just as soon as I have weekday off (yeah, like that'll happen) I'll see
if I can get the scoop on it. Right now it's caged off and I can't get
close enough to obtain the vin. (Sorry James).

Scott Responds:
This sounds like an excellent format for a "CAR" convention.
My family and I went to the DMC Expo in Snowmass and had a great time,
but it was tough to swallow $280/night for a condo with a kitchen.
Granted, it was one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. $99/night
for a room with kitchen and breakfast really sounds good.
I sure hope that the DMC owners are able to have a similar event
someday, relatively low cost accomadations, and lots of "car" related
events.
The event in Snowmass was great fun, but ended up costingf for the four
of us about $2500.

I just returned from a Bricklin Car show today. They took pitty on me
and allowed me to exhibite my DeLorean. Sandy Bigman host the show at
his office in San Ramon, CA. The Western States Briklin owners group
had 14 cars show up. It was a lot of fun seeing that many gullwings in
one place. Every one there was very friendly and frequently commented
on the fit and finish of my DeLorean. They thought it looked very
professionaly assembled. They must not have read the stories in SS
Illusion ;)
I met a couple of Bricklin owners that also own DeLoreans.
It was a good time today. I sure would like to get a group together in
the San Francisco Bay Area so we could hold a mini show like I
participated in today.
If anyone is interested, please e-mail me directly.

Though I had not planned to go to Snowmass, I felt that I might make a
last minute flight up there, but I ended up buying a house (finally have
a large enough garage for my toys!) and moved in to it over that weekend,
effectivley ruling that out.
In any case, I have heard little about it from those who attended. I
daresay that I have heard more about the "Fun Run 7" than the Expo. I
know of at least 4-5 people from the list who went, let's hear about it!

June 12, 13, 14 1998
If you are a DeLorean owner or DeLorean Enthusiast
you won=EDt want to miss the DeLorean Car Show
in Cincinnati Saturday June 13, 1998
This show is open to everyone and is non club affiliated
(A few of us DeLorean owners got together and we have a show for you)
WHERE: Cincinnati Museum of Natural History, Cincinnati Ohio
Ezzard Charles exit 1H off I75 near downtown Cincinnati.
WHEN: June 13th from 10:00 to 5:00 PM. Followed by a banquet in the =
Museum
Two Years ago I bought my DeLorean and have since enjoyed every =
minute. As most of you know seeing many DeLoreans in one place is =
really an amazing sight and attracts a whole lot of attention. The =
Cincinnati Museum has agreed to let us use their beautifully =
landscaped facility to host a car show for our cars. The goal of =
this car show is to have a category for everyone and to have lots of =
fun doing it.
Since many of you will be coming from out of town arrangements have =
been Made to stay at the Westin Hotel Downtown Cincinnati just =
minutes from the Museum and in the Center of town. Reservations for =
1 to 3 night are available for $70.00 per person double occupancy (2 =
kids with parents are free) All arrangements can be prepaid at a =
savings with one check. Your reservations for the whole event will =
be made and confirmed back to you.
For those of you unfamiliar with Cincinnati you can tour the city in =
a horse drawn carriage or walk the city skywalk and enjoy many of the =
cities popular local restaurants and pubs. There is something for =
everyone and families with children are encouraged to come.
The event starts on Friday evening June 12th. For those staying aat =
the Westin we will meet in the lobby and drive over to Montgomery Inn =
a Landmark restaurant in Cincinnati. We will be served Dinner as we =
look over the river. Its a time to get aquainted with your fellow =
Delorean owners. After dinner we will have our pictures takes with =
the river as our background.
From that point we will split up to one of many night spots where =
I=EDm sure our cars will get noticed. Bottom line is just have fun.
Saturday is the car show and you will begin to arrive at the museum =
around 10:00. Breakfast is on your own and there are many places in =
and near the hotel.
The Museum is located in the old restored Union Terminal located at =
1301 Western Ave. Cincinnati, OH 45203
Inside you will walk through the ice age of 19,00 years ago then leap =
ahead into the Cincinnati of the 1850=EDs. You will surround =
yourself with a 72 foot domed OMNIMAX movie screen and visions of the =
future.
The Museum Center houses the Museum of Natural History and Science, =
the Cincinnati History Museum, The Historical society Library, The =
OMNIMAX Theater and a variety of museum shops, and food services. =
The museum itself can be an all day event so bring your families and =
enjoy one of the countries finest attractions. The Smithsonian =
magazine says this museum is a must see for everyone. We have =
received a special price of $11 per adult and $7.00 per child for the =
two Museums and the 8:00 Omnimax show.
Your day at the Museum will begin with registration for those of you =
who bring your cars. We will have the fountain area available to us =
to display our cars. The museum has a large cascading waterfall =
fountain that will hold around 35 DeLoreans in a setting that is =
magnificent against the Rotunda of the Museum. On the Museum=EDs =
face is a large clock similar to the one used in the Back to the =
Future series making this a perfect place for our show. Everyone else =
can start to tour the Museum or look at the cars. The format for the =
day is rather loose to accommodate everyone=EDs pace. Lunch is on =
your own in one of the many food shops in or near the Museum.
During the day there will be technical sessions and a parts sale =
table. Judging of the cars will begin at 12 and end whenever the =
judges are done. The cars will be broken up into several categories =
ranging from concourse level to Daily drives. ALL CARS are =
encouraged to enter. There will be awards at all levels. There will =
even be a TLC award for the DeLorean needing a little tender loving =
care.
Concours Level (Judged by local Concourse and ISCA judges. Local =
rules and regulations will be observed.
Modified Painted
Modified Unpainted
Daily Driver under 50K miles
Daily Driver over 50K miles
General exhibit category for cars that need a little care (The TLC =
award will be given here)
A minimum of three cars per class and a maximum of 5 cars except =
concours, will allow everyone the opportunity to show off their cars. =
All cars will be assigned a category and new categories formed if =
necessary. All cars will be judged. Everyone has a DeLorean for =
their own reason and here is a perfect chance to showcase your car. =
Awards for farthest traveled and most miles will be included in these =
events.
The Museum Center closes at 5:00 and at this time we will move inside =
to our banquet hall where we will have dinner and announce the =
winners of the car show. There will be a raffle for DeLorean car =
parts and accessories along with other raffles and events.
The main focus on this car show is to have a good time.
After dinner we will make our way to the OMNIMAX Theater and enjoy =
the special effects on a 180 degree 72 foot tall screen. The show =
playing in June will not be announced until January 1 so we will keep =
you informed in upcoming articles.
If you still want to party you can visit some of the night spots you =
missed the night before.
Sunday is open and we would encourage families with children of =
families that like amusement parks to visit Paramount Kings Island, =
the Beach Water Park, Coney Island, Surf Cincinnati or a variety of =
other family parks. The Argosy Casino is just a short drive down the =
river and of course there is Kentucky race horsing. Sunday is open =
for you to enjoy the City as you like or head back home.
A web site is being set up to give all of the information in detail =

The binnacle is held in place with 6 nyloc nuts. These will require a 7mm
swivel socket wrench to remove. These are accessed in the usual way, i.e.
lay down on your back with your head under the dashboard and look
straight up. Taking the seat out may give you a little more room. Once
the nuts are removed, the binnacle can be lifted up and tilted toward the
steering wheel. At that time, look through the windshield and identify
the upper speedo cable and release it by pressing the catch ring toard
the cluster. Then identify the two wiring connectors and remove them. It
is now possible to lift the whole assembly from the dash.
With the binnacle removed, the instrument cluster is separated from the
binnacle by removing 8 phillips screws - two per side and four across the
bottom.
With the cluster removed from the binnacle, remove the screw that holds
the trip-odometer reset. Remove 6 phillips screws holding the cluster
lens in place. The tach must be removed before the speedo. Remove the
tach by removing the locating nuts on the rear of the instrument. The
speedo and the rest of the instruments can be removed in the same manner.

I also own a Bricklin. When comparing the two cars on
fit and finish, there is no competition. The delorean looks
perfect compared to a sv-1. BUT, on the performance end,
the delorean is always be in the rear view mirror :-)
FYI : In the early part of the Bricklin Developement,
Malcom Bricklin had a meeting with John Delorean

declined the offer since he was getting ready
to start his own car company, DMC.
I have always wandered what would have happened

I have an extreme interest and knowledge on DeLoreans and Bricklins. We
have
been planning on purchasing a DeLorean soon. I recently visited a
Bricklin
repairer/Dealer. His name is Bob Hoffman, of "Bob's Brickyard". he said
DeLoreans are a bit faster.
One of my neighbors has a Bricklin, the other has a DeLorean, The
DeLorean is
faster, by a little bit.
In the Bricklin gold Portfolio it rates Bricklins at: (Miles per hour...)
0-30=4.0sec
0-40=5.5sec
0-50=7.3sec
0-60=9.9sec
0-70=12.8sec
0-80=16.9sec
0=90=22.4
top speed of Bricklin=123mph...acceleration rate to 123mph=32.3sec
DeLorean gold portfolio rates DeLorean at: (Miles per hour)
0-30=3.6sec
0-60=10.5/ my classic car book says 9.6sec
0-100=40.0-I dont believe that because my classic car book says 28.8, and
my
neighbor had it timed and he said about 24sec.
DeLoreans top end=130mph-DeLorean wins in top end...
There are so many different rates in different book, why doesnt someone
with
a delorean time it to 60mph, and someone with a Bricklin time it to 60mph,
and then we'll compare???

Subject: DML: Psychological reason for my big battery
Martin Gutkowski asked:
> WHAT is the rating of your battery?
> My battery could happily support this for over thirteen hours.
To tell the truth I don't remember. It has either 975 or 1000 CCAs, but I
don't remember the amp hour rating. I simply got the biggest one I could
find, and it barely fit into the compartment. As I said before, this is
mostly
for its psychological benefit. Here's why:
Back when I was shopping for a sports car I had friends give me all
sorts of opinions. The Corvette fans said a 'vette was the way to go,
the Porsche fans wanted me to get a 911. When I told them I was
looking at DeLoreans they just laughed at me. None of them had ever
driven a DeLorean before, but somehow they all "knew" that DeLoreans
were junk.
The day I bought my DeLorean my first stop (before I even went home)
was to show it off to that group. I took it to a place where I knew they
were all gathered, and all heads turned as I opened my door. They
styling of the DeLorean really made a strong impression, and for a while
they were converted. With it's gullwing doors open, the DeLorean stood
out among the 'vettes and 911s, and it remained the topic of conversation
all evening. As they admired my beautiful car I though about the great
story I could write for DeLorean World, converting these sceptics into
DeLorean fans. But that dream was shattered by what happened next.
About midnight, after FIVE HOURS of the doors open and the marker and
courtesy lights on, everyone was ready to leave. I went to start the
DeLorean and my battery didn't have enough power to crank the engine!
Maybe it could supply enough juice to run the lights for thirteen hours,
but
after five hours it couldn't start the engine.
My friends laughed and went back to deriding the DeLorean as a piece
of junk. After giving me a jump start they insisted on following me home,
saying that DeLoreans are so terrible they can't go a mile without
breaking down. I was humiliated.
The next day I bought the biggest battery I could get, just to heal my
bruised ego. Since then I have been able to put that battery through
Hell,
leaving the doors open as long as I want, and it never dies.
Of course the big battery came too late to save face with my old sports
car friends. I don't see that group much anymore, but every time I do
they remind me of the night of the dead battery. None of them has had a
single nice word to say about DeLoreans ever since.
> when charging, the battery will not be drawing anywhere
> near the current drawn on starting.
Obviously this is true. But after a few hours with the doors open (e.g. a
car show), driving home with the headlights and A/C going, the load on
my alternator is probably the highest it ever gets. It seems to take
about
20-25 minutes on the highway before my system voltage gets back up to
normal. I have always assumed this was due to recharging the battery.
Am I wrong?

Subject: Re: DML: Psychological reason for my big battery
(reply to the last bit) The voltage of the battery should not drop by more
than a fraction of a volt, even when almost discharged - this also goes
for when a quite high current is drawn. This is one of the principle
points of a lead-acid battery.
As to your story - I hope I didn't create the wrong impression :) I LOVE
the DMC, but until I graduate, I shall have to make do with my Diesel
Estate, bought for the principle of being extremely reliable.
My friend has an identical car, and the alternator failed (a Bosch unit,
for the record) He was able to get the car
home (a good 150 miles), and subsequently strt the car a total of SEVEN
times - the battery powering everything in the car.
I made the point before that Diesels require a much higher torque on
starting and therefore have a bigger battery - you have tackled this
problem already, but in my mind there's still a question-mark over the
voltage lowering "until the alternator can charge the battery up enough".
In my humble and not-all-that knowlegable opinion, there might be
something up with the alternator that it is effectively "job-sharing" with
the battery... Anyone else any ideas?

Ah, we men and our obsession with size!
Recently I showed my car for 10 hours in a concours. 90% of the time, the
doors were up. Knowing full well that this is quite a drain on the
battery, I simply disconnected them for all but the judging.
Bruce Benson has gone one step further and has converted one of the
non-functional switches in the center console so that he can turn off the
door lights whenever he so desires. This is a nice touch which will be one
of my winter projects.
For what it is worth, I installed an Optima fully sealed battery that has
performance beyond belief and appears to be even smaller than the
original.

I just got a book on DeLoreans that I ordered from The Delorean owners
Association(not to mention a cool t-shirt). As I was looking at all the
pictures, I saw a DeLorean with a thicker black stripe on the side that
read: DMC. Was this optional or did it just come on some of the earlier
ones? And also, why was the fuel filler flap moved from the hood? In the
book it says that there was nearly 4,000 DeLoreans produced, but I also
heard that there were over eight thousand produced, which is correct?
Thanks!

Subject: DML: DMC For sale, VIN, and Book Sighting!
Lets start with the book sighting...
Ya know, I thought I would remember the details, but I didnt!!!
Anyway, while killing time in CostCo this weekend, I found a book that I
think was called "The world's strangest Automobiles". Not to much
information, but a really nice picture of a DMC took up almost 2 pages.
Also in the book was the few other custom, or modified gull winged cars,
such as a 1970'sish Mercedes, and a Volkswagen bug!
While driving today in Ocean Township, New Jersey I saw a DMC for sale
in front of a stereo store I used to work at... The owner and I dont
really get along, but that is another story that no one cares about.
I went in, and asked him who was selling, and what the price was. (Yes,
he recognized me, but I had my DMC, so it made me feel like I had "made
it") His buddy was looking to sell the car... Here is the information I
got for those interested.
Owners Name :Domenic Jr (no last name)
Vin: 1557 (I think... From memory)
Build Date: May 1981
Trans: 5 speed
Interior: Black
Odometer: 5K miles
Asking Price: 15K
Phone Number: Left it at home... E-Mail if you want it.
Notes: I did not see any rust on the frame, so it was most likley
stored in a garage. I did not spend any time looking to see what
upgrades or fixes were done, but did notice that the front tires had
been replaced, and there was a noticible rip on the side of the driver's
seat. I would venture to say that this car has more than 5K on it
(typical!) but looks like it MAY be a good deal for 15K.
Disclamer: I dont know the owner, or the car.. I am just relaying the
information I was given, and adding my own UNPROFESSIONAL opinion.
Please make all purchase decisions on your own!

there for $19,000 too, for anyone who is interested.

Brandon,
The three versions of the DeLorean hood is the subject of this month's
"Why doesn't my DeLorean look like your DeLorean?" column on the
DeLorean Owners Association web page. Go to:
http://www.delorean-owners.org/legend/index.html
and select DIFFERENCES.
The thick/thin/no striping will be the subject of a future column.
DOA records show a total production of 8,583 Deloreans. From the same
page as above, select DESCRIPTION for a further breakdown by year.

James,
I have been using this outside shade for 4 years since it provides the
best interior protection. I drive the car daily and use the shade
regularly. I have not noticed any deterioration of the cover from use.
The only problem is having to open the passenger door to put the cover on.
Hope that helps!

After being pulled over for the 5th time for not having a front license
plate, I better get one put on.
My question is where does it mount and how? I'd rather not put it on but
one
of these days i'm gonna get nailed. Also, what is the best way(keeping
affordability in mind) to lower my car. Should I do that front/rear
spring
swap or have each spring cut? Thanks,

I dropped by the DOA website yesterday and noticed that Linda Porter is
now listed as the President of the Association. If Linda is lurking out
there today: Congratulations!
As of yesterday I didn't see any information about the 1998 DOA Expo.
Does anyone on the DML know the date and location of this event? Is
that still undecided at this point? My fiancee and I are trying to plan
the
number of vacation days we will need next year. There are always
other events competing for our time, but we don't want to miss another
Expo!

I noticed the DMC fuel accumulator has three inputs/outputs.
Two seem to go towards the back end, and one towards the fuel
tank front end. Can someone please explain the destination of
each port and why there are not just two. (My understanding
was the accumulator kept pressure in the engine side of the
fuel system while the engine was off, but why then are there
three lines? does it have any additional functions?). Thanks.

DeLorean Motor Company (Houston) sells a nice bracket that mounts to the
air dam, eliminating the need to drill holes in the fascia. Looks nice,
too. (800) USA-DMC1 or (281) 568-9573.

hello all: and thanks
Thanks to all of u who sent me a reply about state farm insurance.
after three months of fighting with them and getting a new agent
assigned to me, i am able to keep my state farm policy on my "d"
seems they finally agreed that my "uncancellable policy" was issued
prior to my cancellable delorean policy, so the "uncancellable" wins
out. (sounds like -playing with words- to me.)
any how thanks to all who sent me policy numbers and support....
found some interesting things out about the car while replacing the
water pump, and learning new things while rebuilding the alternator
- -higher output and better regulation-
more on that in a few days
did u say special plates-- mine here in florida say "82 DMC-12"

Subject: Re: DML: Front license plate/Lowering car
Here in Colorado we are required to have a front plate and it is pretty
strictly enforced. After much teeth gnashing, I attaced mine the way the
factory intended, to the front bumper. Hurts like the devil to drill that
first hole, but after it's done, and a black frame with plexiglass cover
is
put on the plate, it looks as if it belongs there.
Next, how low is low. My 81 was lowered via the spring swap and cut
method. I felt the car handled better and I liked the looks. If properly
done, it is very nice. However, speed bumps and curbs are a real bitch.
In fact, entering and exiting many commercial driveways can be a problem.
Jacking up the car for a tire change can be a challenge. Or, getting on a
lift for an oil change requires two people, one to lift the body and the
other to put the arms under the car. On my present D I have the Euro
springs. Front is lowered approximately 1.5 inches. Rea is lowered 1
inch. 'Tis not as low as the other method, but it looks great, handles
well and has none of the disadvantages of the previous method. Cost for
four springs is under $400 and you still have your originals in the event
you ever want to return to stock or to sell to a purist. If you like a
bit
of a "rake" you can just put on the front springs.
Good Luck
