After having rebuilt my Ducellier for the third time, I had enough!
Replaced it with a 105 AMP Delco. This alternator laughs at any
electrical load the Delorean tries to throw at it! The alternator shop
constructed this one from two different models. It matches the
Ducellier perfectly in size and shape. No modifications were even
necessary to the tension bracket. It's a great feeling when the high
beams are on and A/C cycles and their is no visible effect and the
voltage gauge drops to only 13v, instead of 10v. Typically runs at
14.4v, no problems with overcharging. I have my rebuilt Ducellier ready
to drop in for any kind of concourse judging. BTW, the Ducey died at
approximately 5000 miles each time, long enough though to make it to a
show!

Subject: DML: Stalling problem part II

In a previous message I wrote about how my engine was stalling and
starting over and over again only when accelerating. I finally got
around my determination that it had to be an electrical problem and went
on the advice of a few people and discovered that it is a fuel delivery
problem.

While looking in the gas tank at the hoses, I noticed what could be a
broken hose clip resting in the very center area of the baffle inside
the tank where the hose is showing. Is this supposed to be there? I
did not have very good light and the light diffraction through the gas
was not helping me see it very well, but the band appeared to be broken
and the screw in the hose clip appeared to be in front of the hose. I
am at this point assuming that a previous owner may have dropped the
hose clip from the fuel pump in the tank and bought a new one, leaving
the old one in the tank.

I figured that I should ask in advance if that clip is supposed to be
there before I go poking around in the gas tank anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Dear DML,
I too have a 105 amp Delco. But I did have to swap the tensioner
with a V-8 style. The only question I have is what color wire goes to
pin 1 and what color wire goes to pin 2????

I'm just guessing here...
but in my old 914 there was a pressure overflow looping back to the gas
tank from the fuel pump for when the pump pumped more gas than the engine
could take. This is probably similar.

I have ordered a shop manual from delorean one. I'll check it out when I

located in Detroit, Mi. He is the original owner. This car is an
automatic
with grey interior and has less than 7000 miles. The car has been stored
nearly
it's whole life. He is asking $20,000 or best offer. If you are
interested,
contact Lou Meyers at 810-986-8868.
I have had a chance to view this car briefly, and from what I saw, it
is in
excellent condition. I did not notice any frame rust or body damage and
the car
ran fine. If I didn't already have a 'D' I may have bought it myself! Oh,
I
don't have a VIN number for it, but if anyone wants it, I can find out.

Subject: DML: Expo in Snowmass

We arrived in Snowmass on Thur and had a welcome reception and
registration. From there we hopped on a bus and went to the Crystal
Palace in Aspen. The food was great, the entertainment was even better
and Kevin Costner sat one table over. Another bus ride back to the hotel
and the night was over(for some of us). Friday morning we had the tech
seminars. Rob Grady talked about fuel systems and Steven Wynne went over
what to look for when inspecting your D. These were over much to soon and
the next session was a talk from Ed Bernstein about how a perfect D will
be worth $50,000 in the year 2000 (everybody is entitled to an opinion).
The product fair was next and was well attended. Steven brought a Ryder
truck full of stuff(reg price but free shipping). After a few hours off
we went to a roof top buffet sponsered by P.J.Grady. The magic show was
so good, a group of us went down to the local bar to see more of it.
Saturday morning the cars(I beleive it was 12) were put on display in the
outdoor mall at Snowmass Village. The display was fairly impressive and
got alot of attention. Awards were given by peoples vote but I don't
remember the results. After some sightseeing, we headed to the final
dinner, sponsered by Delorean One(we all got a bear with a D1 logo). OK
food, great conversation, and some antics by Ed rounded out the evening.
Another trip to the local bar made getting up on Sunday more difficult.
Sunday morning was check out and drive to Aspen for a ride up the
gondola. A great brunch at 11,000 feet and back down the gondola. The
next idea was to do the group picture. After about a half hour drive we
arrived at the appointed spot but the best we could do was 8 Deloreans
with a breathtaking background of the Rockies. That was the end of Expo
97. Some personal thoughts, had a great time but only spent about half a
day with the cars, met alot of people and made some new friends. I quess
I forgot to mention that next year it's in L.A.(long trip for us
easterners).I'll try it one more year and hope to see alot more people
next year.

The accumulator is actually a diaphragm with a spring underneath it. The
two large fittings with the teflon hose on one end are the fuel input
(from the pump) and output (to the engine). I don't recall which is
which. They are different size and only fit one way, and since there is
no check valve in the accumulator itslf it doesn't really matter. When
you start the car, the pressure is built up and the diaphram spring is
compressed. This, along with a check valve at the fuel pump, is what
holds the pressure when you shut the car off. The third hose, the smaller
one that is on the end by itself, is to allow the pressure inside the
accumulator to equalize as the diaphragm spring is compressed. It is
connected in a T arrangement to the fuel return line to the tank. It
could, by design, just as easly have been vented to the outside, but then
when the accumulator fails (usually a break in the diaphragm) the fuel
that leaks through the diaphram would be dumped on the ground instead of
back into the tank. On most of the cars I have looked at, the third hose
is much lighter duty than the others since it is under very little
pressure.

Note that when disconnecting the fittings, you must hold them from above
with a wrench (remove the little package tray at the rear of the console
and tear out the access panel) or you'll twist/kink the steel fuel lines.
Since the lines are mounted to the top of the frame but beneath the
fiberglass body, you can imagine what you'd have to do to replace them.

I've replaced my driving lights with a pair from Hella. These have a
crystal lens and a replacable halogen H4 bulb. The beam pattern is
definitely better (very well defined horizontal line with an upswing
to the right) so aligning is simple. I normally run with darkly tinted
headlight covers on, so I upped the wattage of the bulbs a bit to not
look out of place in normal (not so dark) city driving. When I do
highway driving or driving in areas that are not well lit, the covers
come off in 2 seconds and the light is fantastic. I cannot stress
enough how proper alignment is the key to your lights, especially if
your lights may be pushing the envelope for their intensity. Check
with the specs in your area what the maximum brightnesses are for
street driving. Oh, I also read a long time ago how the test drivers
in Ireland were complaining on the weak headlights, but understood
that they were for a US market.

I talked with K&N over the phone to their headquarters in
Californaia about a filter that fits our car. First off, there
isn't one -- hence your trouble. Secondly, contrary to some beliefs,
they do not manufacture custom ones on demand. However, they told me
that if I was able to get the car to their HQ, they could take their
own measurements and possibly include it in their product line. I,
however, live in Toronto, and a bit too far away for that sort of
thing. If I got the details of where to go and a contact name at K&N,
if there interest from any Californians to drop by the plant for the
measurements to be taken? I believe their office is outside of San
Diego...

Failing finding this type of filter upgrade, an attainable K&N filter
might be able to be fitted, but it would be drawing its air from the
engine
compartment.

This is a vacuum problem, not electrical. Your selector switch on the
center console is not opening and closing the vac actuators properly.
When you switch modes, do you hear a "hiss" sound? Find out where it
comes from.

The problem is probably with the selector switch / valve, but it might be
with a vac line or one of the vac actuators.

Are the circulating fan and the coolong fans synchronized when they go
on and off? You didn't say for sure.

The air circulating fan is a genuine electrical problem. The lead to the
bottom of the fan motor might be loose. It is also likely that the
circuit
breaker is kicking the circulating fan on and off. This is a very common
problem addressed in the back issues. It might also be a bad relay, but I
think the circuit breaker is more likely.

The cooling fans might be due to an old fan fail module. Does you car
have the original module or the bypass? I am almost cretain you have the
old module, because the bypass disables the "Fan Fail" light.

Note that all three of these problems are adressed in the DML back
issues. You can either consult them or post again to the list with more
information. You should find out:

Can you hear a vac leak somewhere under your dashboard? Where?

Does your circulating fan have a loose lead?

Do you have the fan fail bypass? (Look in the relay compartment. Find
the relay socket farthest to the passenger side door in the row toward
the front of the car. If there is a relay there you have the old module.

there are some wires and two fuses you have the bypass).

Rob, I too went through K&N dance. They stopped short of the offer that
they
made to you. I live in the Los Angeles area and I would be thrilled to
take
my 'D' to them. I'm sure that most of the folks who own 'D's would love
to
have one of their filters in their cars. So please send me the
information,
and I will follow up with them.  Best regards, Joe :-}

I also have this item, which cost about $35, and am impressed by the
bracket. No problems with it in nearly two years of owning my DeLorean
which is a daily driver. One nice feature of this bracket is that it is
made out of Stainless Steel!.

I know David Stalling and his DeLorean and actually am presently living
just about three blocks away from him right now. I've already offered to
give a second opinion to anyone who would like it. Never driven his car,
but I do know he has put a lot of work into restoring it and other
classic autos.

Anyone wants to come and take a look at the car, please let me know and
I'll try to meet with you and chat as well.

Subject: DML: another water pump story

Greetings:
I'll try to keep this short, but u know how that is with DeLorean
stuff. I bought my "d" in mid june, upstate NY, drove it home to
Florida, upon pulling into my driveway, the alternator quit, the
engine started running rough, the water pump started leaking and the
engine was overheating, fans failed, also running rough when i tried
to restart it after it cooled down. (i didnt let it over heat too
much, had to stop about 40 miles from home to let it cool off. Well
got a 110 amp alternator in it, charging great, but the battery
shorted out, no problem SEARS gold (free replacement for 2 years
(just got it in july.) now the water pump was a different story,
ordered one up from warren (houston) nice guy-- very helpful--
pleasent to chat with.. with the o-ring kit--- after removing the
intake manafold and breaking only one bolt (e-z out to the rescue)
very careful about air leaks..., i firmly believe this car is
possesed, with some kinda entity......... the charge light quit
working (battery) you know when u put the key in it should light ,and
when u start it it go's out after the alternator kicks in....
whew..... now its extreamly hard to start (almost impossible and the
fuel pump isn't pumping...hmmmmmm posesed-I'm telling u........
so the sage continues tomorrow, oh got it to run absolutly smooth as
silk... took it for a drive of about one hour.... parked it back in
the drive and decided to invite a friend over and to go to lunch....
HA----- u think it would start..... NNOoooooooooo........
so in tomorrows AM light, Ill continue the SAGA......
I love the car.... but I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR FIGHT ME LIKE THIS..
so it's check the air/fuel mixture... cold start stuff...
hope it starts in the morning... I sure am learning a LOT about this
car, oh , the 4th speed on the blower moter quit working also, and
the AC briefly cuts off then back on.... weird huh......
more to follow..............
