My 1981, still has the original NCT's on it. I now have 22K on them and

they are wearing very evenly. The key to even tire wear is air

pressure. I run 30 in the front and 36 in the rear. Inspect the tires

very closely, look for cracking in the sidewalls. If the car was not

stored on the ground, your tires may still be round. If it has sat in

one place for years, the tires will have become square and the ride will

be terrible. When I put my car back on the road in 1995, it road like a

truck, the shocks were shot 11K, once I replaced the shocks it road a

lot better. This week, I picked up a set of Yokohama AVS tires. You

will want to keep the NCT's for Concours type shows. To be on the safe

side, I would have the tires replaced and ship the NCT's home. I hope

your trip is uneventfull, but do be prepared to performn some repairs on

the road. Most people I have talked to, including myself, have had to

do some sort of repair work on the road, especially when a car has been

stored for several years. I have put 10K on my car since 1995 and am

finally getting all of the bugs out of the car. I just completed a 4400

mile road trip from home to Los Angeles with no real problems. Good

luck and have fun.

Calling DeLorean fanatics,
I have two snippets of information on DeLorean's recently sourced:
1. An advertisement for a photocopier featuring a DeLorean in a

'strange' position! ... caption reads "No more crashes at high speed"

The rear fender looks a little strange but its 100% DeLorean.
2. I'm presently writing the "Urban Design Guidelines for HongKong" and

got the DeLorean into one of the graphical illustrations ...

promoting a pollution free environment, anyone have an electric

   DMC?!?
For anyone who wants a look at these images, drop me your email address

to <ian@netvigator.com> and I'll forward them.

Subject: DML: Idle Problems
I've been playing with a Idle problem since I bought my car last November.

Then the engine wouldn't even run. I've cleaned the fuel tank, replaced

fuel

pump and baffle, replaced fuel filter, cleaned fuel injectors, and

adjusted

CO. The car runs now but has NO pickup. It just sits there and sputters

when

the light turns green and then after several seconds begins to move. I've

checked for vacuum leaks by blocking off all vacuum ports I could find

with no

change. Leaning out the idle CO adjustment seems to make the takeoff

better,

but then the car won't start or idle. Cranking the throttle idle

adjustment

down 3-4 turns allows the car to start, rev up to 2K and drop back to 1K

and

idle. Spark plugs are covered with soot.
As I understand, the idle adjustment screw on the throttle should be set

so

the throttle is closed completely and at the same time the microswitch

for the

ECU(?) adjustment screw is closing the contacts. As long as I don't

engage the

microswitch the car will idle. If I screw the screw in to engage the micro

switch now it kills the engine.
I am thinking maybe "Idle Speed Control Motor" or possibly the "Pressure

Regulator" on the Left valve cover or the engine idle computer.
Getting frustrated, any pointers will be appreciated.

The key to good tires is to keep sunlight off them. I have a set with

virtually no cracks or crazing and they are not too stiff although NCT's

aren't the best tires anyway.
Inspect the tires, if they look all dry and cracked then haul it. If they

look

OK then drive it. Most of the crazing will be to the outside since that

is

where the sunlight hits it most.

Subject: DML: [admin] www.dmcnews.com server issues
For some time now I have been exceeding my server's space limitation by

approximately double what I am allowed (54MB vs 25MB). They have recently

caught on to this and now want me to do something about it. They will not

"sell" additional space, my only option is to upgrade to a larger

"package", the next higher of which includes many features that DMC-News

would not use and still less server space (just 50MB) than I currently

use. The next higher package above that is *extremely* cost-prohibitive

and still only provides minimal server space (75MB).
As an interim fix, I have moved some files to the server where I work -

notably the PDF's, but they are still accessible via the DMC-News web

pages. However, with the recent uploading of the latest issue of the

'zine, I have begun to exceed their server space limitation as well.
My options at this point, as i see them, are to either remove some of the

files from the server, or find a new home for all or some of the files.

If anyone on the list can host some or all of the FTP files (parts

manual, zines, test track video, etc) which total about 40 megabytes,

please let me know. Until I come up with a more elegant, cost-effective

solution, I would like to find a semi-permanent home for these files.

Email me privately to discuss further. Thanks!

Dear De Miller:
This is an area that I have had recent experience in. I just installed, by

myself, a whole new system and here is what I did:
JVC shaft mount (knobs)

AM/FM/Cassette $120.00

20 watts per channel x 4

original rear speaker left in place (sound great with a good radio)

3" Infinity replaced the originals under the dash, adjacent to windshield

60.00

4" woofer with 1" tweeter Infiniti's mounted under dash facing down

90.00
I swear to God that you will think that you are in a concert hall. Not bad

for under $300.00
You will have to remove the gear shit knob, console and control knobs to

give you the manuevering room that you need.
While I was at it I clean up the prior wiring, taped it like the factory

did

and made the cables all the same length.

Assuming that I buy and drive home my new DeLorean in two weeks what do

you experienced owners recommend I DON'T do once I get it home? Is there

such a book as "DeLorean Ownership For Dummies"? I'm used to buying a

used car and the first thing that I do is wash and wax it MY way. This

is part of the "bonding" process. Don't worry, I've read enough to know

not to wax my new D but what else should I avoid besides steel wool and

sandpaper? I will take it up to Garden Grove to have the guys check it

out and tell me if I got screwed on the deal or did okay. Honesty counts

and sometimes hurts but "it's only money", right? I just hope that I can

enjoy it for the first year without any major breakdowns and then decide

if I want to keep it or take a loss and sell it to another dreamer. By

the way, the seller is letting me "have it" for 16K which I think is a

fair price, not too much and not too little. Any replies would be

appreciated! Oh yeah, I CAN NOT find a mechanic here in San Diego that

will work on a DeLorean!! One claims that parts aren't available (BS)

and the other are too afraid. What can I tell them to convince them that

it is "just" a car, not a Rolls or Lamborghini! Also, my insurance agent

told me that it is a "custom made" car. I thought that it was a regular

production model not custom! He gave me a good quote anyway... Thanks

for any and all advice. Phil.

OK guys, do you now see that our free "DMCNEWS" is not really free.

Every reader out there can help keep this site the best there is by

BUYING CHRISTMAS CARDS OR SOME OF THE OTHER ITEMS that James has offered

The christmas cards are really nice, I have purchased three sets, and I

have bought some other items. If you think really hard, you will

probably find that you have saved many hundreds, if not thousands of

dollars by participating in the mailing list.
So lets keep this alive, buy some cards.

Ian, The yokahama are available from the tire rack via mail order. With

shipping, they cost about $500
They are the same size as the NCT's. By concensus of the mailing list

Subject: DML: DeLorean Sighting
Well, today I saw another DeLorean, a little closer than usual this time,

in my driveway to be precise. :} Dick Ryan (raddad) managed to take some

time out of an unexpectedly busy schedule to show me his D, and I have to

say, upon careful consideration, "wow." He came in for a few minutes to

chat, and afterward (once I figured out how to operate the doors) he took

me for a ride, and I have to say that I'm very impressed. I was glowing

brightly enough that raddad was in danger of being hospitalized with

radiation burns. It's the most beautiful car I've ever seen, and after

spending a couple months on a list devoted mostly to the problems of the

D, I'd like to remind everyone that this is really a fantastic vehicle.

Everyone go out to your garage and admire your D. If you haven't got one,

go out to your garage and pretend to admire your D. If you haven't got a

garage, pretend to go out to your garage and admire your D. Okay, back?

Good.  :}
In addition to looking great, the car rides very well, accelerates

crisply, and (courtesy of the twin turbo mod) sounds good too, with a nice

burbly exhaust whenever you slow down. It does put the "bucket" in bucket

seats though - it's like a big stainless steel luge. That's okay though,

it adds to the experience, and once you get everything organized, there is

plenty of room inside.
The engine started, the dash didn't crack, the door locks didn't stick,

the battery didn't die, the A/C worked, the windows worked, it didn't

overheat, he found tires for it, he got insurance for it, there was plenty

of room, there was plenty of visibility, there was plenty of power, two

out of three passing drivers slowed down to gawk, and the angle drive even

turned (although the speedo needle was broken, so you couldn't tell). In

other words: YOU CAN DRIVE THIS CAR, AND IT WILL WORK FOR YOU. I'd like

to say that this little trip did much to allay many fears about the car.

Besides, even if it fell apart after only half an hour, it might be worth

it anyway.

Forget the pressure regulator better known as the warm up regulator these

The movie is in development hell right now with a small production

to the DeLorean Autobiography.
Another company, by the name of... Stainless Steel Productions/Gullwing

Entertainment, Inc. has been working on a script for the past five years,

conducting interviews with everyone who knew John or worked with DMC.
I don't think the title will be called Stainless Steel Illusion,

either. Both companies are calling it DeLorean. And shooting will

not begin until '99. Who knows when!?!
One thing is for sure, the five year script one looks very promising.

It will be atleast 3 hours long and very dramatic. Expect to see

things that most would have forgotten about or felt that it wasn't

necessary to the story, but really was.
No word on casting either.
As far as the value of the car, again, who knows? When Back to the

Future came out, it didn't increase the value as some people expected

it would. Hard to say.

Subject: DML: Trip
Hi all,
Well, I'm back after an uneventful 2,000mi round trip to Carmel. Not

a bit of trouble for the fourth or fifth time I've done it in this

one. Love the twin turbos all the time but especially in the

mountains. When going from sea level to 4,500' normally aspirated

engines lose power but not this one. Speedometer still working and

the normal height springs, slightly shorter fronts, make it much more

comfortable. I would strongly suggest that you not lower a DeLorean

and ground squirrels will be grateful also.
Collected the usual number of fingerprints whenever it was parked.

Has anyone tried one of the two part clear-coats on their car? I may

on a door sill to test it for adhesion. If it works it might be

great.
Chris
Lee, sorry I didn't get by to see you but I couldn't bring myself to

drive into Berkely. In a past life I drove a Coke truck there but

these days I don't want to face the traffic.

The question is not can airbags be installed, the question is are you (is

any one) willing to pay the price to do the job. Like any modification on

any car installing an airbag system is a matter of what it takes and what

is worth.
I decided I was not happy with the seat belt arrangement and removed the

originals in favor of a "5 point padded harness system" just like the sort

you see in race cars and aerobatic aircraft. No special tools are

required,

about two hours of time to install. They are fully certified for street

use

and feature a fool proof quick release. They are rated for over 4

thousands

psi in tension, in other words you could lift the whole DMC by the seat

belt!
The 5 point harness system is snug and comfortable. It can be used as a

standard two or three point system with out any modification.

Hi JimmyC,
I had this problem when I first got my DMC. I found that there were two

main problems involved. The first was loose hose clamps at the top of the

fill hose and over flow tube. To correct this I removed the hoses and

cleaned them and the nipples they are attached to, then reinstalled with

new stainless hose clamps. The second problem is over filling the tank and

spilling some fuel in the square depression around the fill nozzle. I do

my

best to not spill even a single drop, and even if I don't see any spillage

I clean and dry the area around the fill nozzle. Doing this seams to cure

the gas smell for the most part.

Subject: Re: DML: Delorean Movie?
Sorry I haven't been too verbal about the details of the movie. I just

don't want to fill up dmcnews with info until it's more accurate. I'll

post more details as they become known (probably in Nov.), but here are

the

initial details for those interested.
1) Tentative Shooting Schedule: October - December 1999.
2) Stainless Steel Illusion is a tentative title.
3) Casting is in negotiations right now with two famous? individuals and

as

soon as I get a signature from either of them I'll post more info. One of

the main actors for JZD's part might have a scheduling conflict with next

fall, so if he signs, the movie will be shot around him (quite worth the

postponement).
4) Budget is under a million, but not by much.
5) I've talked with JZD about signing on as an advisor, but we haven't

gotten anything finalized. He recently optioned his book to blue rider

productions who are also producing a film on DeLorean

(http://www.blueriderpictures.com/development.htm), so he may have a

contractual obligation with them. I've also requested a cameo from the

man, but we'll see..
6) Shooting locations are Northern Illinois, CA, NY, and Ireland, some

arranged, some tentative.
7) The script will be posted online shortly for those interested in it,

both in MS Word format and MovieMagic Screenwriter format.
7) I'll post further information on http://www.creativeworlds.com, so I

don't waste any of James's bandwidth (probably under "/delorean", but I'm

not sure yet).
For those wanting further information, you can email me directly at

daniel@mcgauley.com. This is a REAL movie with a crew already signed and

part of the money secured, so it will be made, but please be patient with

more information as most of the crew (including myself) work full-time on

other things. I'll get more information including press kits and CD-ROM

ready for the St. Louis EXPO for those wanting to take a look at what's

happening.
Thanks for the inquiry.
- -Daniel
P.S. Not sure how the money would affect the price of the DeLorean. I

bought mine last year specifically for encouraging investment and actors

and so far it's really been doing a great job.

Subject: DML: radio installation
Hello Everyone:

Started on the radio installation today. Settled on a Sony. The radio

works fine, but I can't seem to get the speaker wires right. I believe I

have the power, ground, antenna etc., right, cause they all work fine.

(Is the radio supposed to be able to come on even without the key in the

ignition?) The clock and preset memory appear to be working fine cause

I've turned the radio off & on and everything has held and I've turned

the car off & on and they still hold and the antenna goes up & down with

the power switch on the radio. My car had a fender antenna and I

purchased and installed a power antenna (thanks Bob Miller!) and that's

going fine.

But the speakers! I can only get the rider's side front & rear to

work, but I can't get them to work independently (fade)....and it works

on almost all of the wires. Here's what I've got left: White, Grey,

Green, Orange, Purple and Brown. Anybody got the color coded wiring

info? Any help will be greatly appreciated. (Joe at DMC, any ideas?)

Thanks again. De Miller, Kansas City. P.S. I got the old Craig...don't

know if it works, anybody interested? Offers?

it is never normal to smell gas. If it happens only when you top off, it

is leaking from one of two places. Check the boot from around the fuel

pump and make sure that it is on straight and that the clamp is secure.

Also check the filler hose where it connects to the top of the tank

making sure that it is properly installed.

As far as I know Stainless Steel Productions/Gullwing Entertainment, Inc.

is a Canadian company shooting a movie called "Daybreak." More info can

be

found at http://uk.imdb.com/Title?Daybreak+(1998/I). They just finished

production as far as I know, and the story isn't about the DeLorean. If

you have any further information on the 5 year script company, please let

me know because as far as JZD knows, Blue Rider Pictures and mine are the

only two scripts available, so I'd be very interested to learn about the

third company.

If you read the owner's manual - the owner is advised NOT TO TOP OFF THE

TANK.

Topping off will resut in a gasoline smell.

All late model Sony radios use the same wire harness. Here's the color

code:
Blue wire >> Antenna
Red wire >> +12V switched (IGN)
Yellow >> +12V Energised at all times
Black >> Ground
Blue/white striped>> Supply wire to an external amp.
**Speaker wires (the wire with the stripe is the (-) wire:
White set >> Left Front
Gray set >> Right Front
Green set >> Left Rear
Purple set >> Right Rear
With the Sony, the antenna will only be up when the radio is on. If the

cassette or the CD is playing, the antenna will be retracted.
It sound like you hooked the Red wire up to a constant 12 volt source

when

it should be hooked to the IGN. line. On the speakers, I think you have

the wires crossed. Gook luck!
