DeLorean Related Books

Reading is fundamental - and these books tell the story. All of these books are out of print and are a "must-have" for the serious DeLorean owner/enthusiast. The best way to learn the history of the car, company and man.

These books are usually easy to find (except as noted) on the internet including eBay and most used-book sites.

The DeLorean Tapes

Published by THE SUNDAY TIMES INSIGHT, London
This is a rare soft cover book which is a compilation of all the FBI tapes made during their attempt to set their hook in John Z. DeLorean. It's 164 pages long and is just transcripts wth a few paragraphs interspersed to describe the setting when each set of tapes were made. It's a little tabloid in character but nevertheless, it is about John Z. Special thanks to Bruce Benson for telling me about this one!

The dust jacket says, "many have attempted to tell his story; now it is his turn". An interesting book written from JZD's perspective. It contradicts the other books on several subjects, several times, but makes for good reading. Some courtroom illustrations, and photos of JZD's artistic endeavors. JZD, in the past, has been willing to sign individual copies of this book for those who will send their book to him with return postage. To my knowledge, only published in hard cover.

"Grand Delusions: The Cosmic Career of John DeLorean" Hillel Levin $20.00
Another "after" book, it offers fewer pictures, fewer facts and essentially the same story as "Dream Maker". The author can be reached at hl(AT)coolsavings.com - essentially the same illustrations as above. To my knowledge, only published in hard cover.

"Hard Driving: My Years with John DeLorean" William Haddad $20.00

I believe that this is the only book written by a DMC executive, though there were several magazine articles by others. I think this book offers the best idea at what it was like inside DMC, and JZD. No illustrations or photographs. Published in both hard cover and paperback.

"On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors" J. Patrick Wright
Easily the first book about JZD, Wright wrote the book based on hours of meetings and voluminous notes from JZD. JZD was hesitant to publish for fear of retribution against DMC. Wright eventually published the book himself in 1979. Published in both hard cover and paperback.

"Dream Maker: The Rise and Fall of John Z. DeLorean" Ivan Fallon and James Srodes
One of the first books to be published after DeLoreans arrest, the book suffers from poor editing and fact-checking, but does offer interesting insights into JZD, and DMC. Twenty-eight pictures. To my knowledge, only published in hard cover.

"DeLorean: Stainless Steel Illusion" John Lamm
Really the best book that I know of regarding the car itself, with hundreds of photos of protoypes, pre-production cars, mock-ups, assembly line, JZD, detail photos...it goes on and on. A few minor factual errors that I know of, but for the most part a great book! To my knowledge, only published in hard cover. Very rare, often selling for over $200. REPRINT NOW EXPECTED FALL 2003 by DeLorean Motor Company of Texas

"DeLorean 1977-1993" For those of you that missed the whole DeLorean saga when it was happening, this book is nothing more than a compilation of magazine articles from around the world. Many of the articles are very interesting, though knowledgeable DeLorean buffs will notice many factual errors in many of the articles. Hundreds of photos, all black and white. This, and the "Gold Portfolio" edition are the only books that are currently in print. To my knowledge, only published in paperback form.

"DeLorean 1977-1995 Gold Portfolio" Drawing on material from a wide range of motoring magazines, this volume is devoted to the prestigious and high-performance cars from DeLorean. Expanded Brooklands coverage features articles by the top automotive journalists from the world's leading automotive publications. Filled with road and track tests, model introductions, driving impressions, comparisons, a factory visit, performance and technical data, specs, long term reports, and so much more. This, and the "1977-1993" edition are the only books that are currently in print. To my knowledge, only published in paperback form.

"Automobile Quarterly, Volume 21, Number 2" Article by Walt Woron
Those familiar with AQ know the depth and breadth of their articles, and this one is no exception. The article, entitled "Dreaming the Impossible Dream: The DeLorean and its Predecessors", also looks at Tucker, the Davis and the Dale, various reincarnations of the Duesenberg name, the Fascination, the Bricklin and then a 8+ page article on the DeLorean that is both accurate and concise. Seven wonderful color photographs of a clean original car. To my knowledge, only published in hard cover.
