Care & Feeding - Replacing the Standard Radio
The radio installed in the DMC-12 uses standard shaft-style
mountings and can readily be replaced. The radio in my 83 DMC (the
ASI one) is already pretty good and I keep it for the sake of
originality. I cant say anything about the performance of the Craig
radio installed in the 81s, although early cars suffered from poor
radio performance in large part due to the inadequate windshield
antenna. The windshield antenna was replaced by an aft mounted electric
antenna in later cars. Should you do a swap, you should keep
the radio as it is pretty spendy. A new original radio costs around
$500.
