Although not commonly known, the DeLorean automobile has a model name of DMC-12 which was originally the internal code name for the project. The DMC-12 is usually simply referred to as a "DeLorean." The car was originally developed to compete directly with the Corvette, which at that time had a sales price of about $12000, which is likely where the project name came from.
